I have often wondered why there are so few realistic movies on the experience of motherhood. The two I can recall portraying it successfully are Parenthood and Baby Boom, and both of those are 20 years old {How ancient does that make you feel?!} Why aren’t there movies on the topic? It’s certainly entertaining enough, don’t you think?

Thankfully, writer/director Katherine Dieckmann recognized this void as well. Premiering tomorrow is her film Motherhood, starring Uma Thurman, Anthony Edwards and Minnie Driver. Shot entirely on location in New York’s West Village, the movie tackles the challenges of raising children while trying to balance marriage, friendships, work and sanity. Relatable enough for you? It gets even better. The main character, Eliza is also a blogger.

While Dieckmann’s primary motivation for making Motherhood was to amuse and entertain, she’s gratified when people connect with the characters on a deeper level. “My two favorite reactions are mothers saying they can really relate to it and fathers who ask if we had a microphone in their kitchens last night, because they had exactly that conversation with their wives. I also like it when guys say it gives them a better understanding of what their wives go through every day.”

The moment I heard of the movie, I knew I needed to be involved. Thankfully, the pr company was game, and they’ve allowed me, along with a small group of mommy bloggers I’ve put together, to be involved in promoting the film.We’re manning the Twitter and Facebook accounts and coming up with fictional blog posts to be featured on the movie’s website. Tomorrow, I head off to New York to attend the press junket with the cast and red carpet premier.

It’s been exciting, exhausting and challenging all at once. Just like motherhood. And, I’ve loved it!

{Edited to add: If you’re reading this now, I want to add that once I saw the movie, I realized that I could never again stand behind a product that I hadn’t experienced. Here is my review on Motherhood. You’ll note that I never mentioned the actual movie. It was that bad. Lesson learned.}

Ok, Baby Boom?! As realistic! She is a career driven woman who INHERITS A BABY and moves to the country where she invents gourmet baby food and falls in love with a country veterinarian and realizes how empty her old life was. Gourmet baby food! It’s apple sauce in fancy jars!

I do agree about Parenthood though.

Probably not the point of your post though :) Congrats on the red carpet. Can’t wait to hear about this movie. Read an interview with Uma in Parenting and it sounds good.

Well, maybe not *that* part, but the struggles of choosing between mothering and a career were convincing. A least to me. :)

I’m SO excited for this movie. The trailer is hilarious and I love the thoughtful and entertaining tweets and comments from Eliza. I hear the film is only in limited release, so HEY BLOGGERS MAKE SOME NOISE! It’s about time there was a movie out there that really does relate to REAL moms and we should all be able to go see it!!! I know you and Laura will have a blast, SUPER proud of you (bit jealous too)! Can’t wait to read all about it.

You missed out Stepmom in your list. Some call it cliched, but I find that it paints the canvas of modern day relationships beautifully. I love the scene where Susan’s son tells her that he would hate Julia is she(susan) wanted him to! So telling about the influence of our thoughtless comments!!

Have fun on the red carpet. Very excited to hear your report :)

You are so right!! It’s a bit sappy, but it’s got the relationship part down perfectly. And it makes me sob every time I watch it!

That is so awesome Jill. I was just on the call with Uma Thurman and heard about your involvement (had to jump over here since I’ve fallen behind on my blog reader). Wow, to see the movie and wear heels! So maybe we’ll see you snapped in People or some other movie premiere magazine/blog. Then I can say I knew her, well, not really knew her, but knew about her in the bloggy world.

I’m excited about seeing this movie too. I’m sure it will make it’s way up to the Great White North at some point. Can’t wait to read your celebrity studded blog post.
