It was a familiar scene: The children were playing upstairs and Jeff and I were sitting on the couch having a late night treat. Suddenly, Evan bounded in the room. I wanna a bite, he announced and pouted his bottom lip out so far that I had no choice but to oblige. Shhhhh, I whispered spoon feeding my little bird. Swallow it quickly and go back upstairs. Pronto.
But before he could even swallow, he darted back to the hallway. Lily! Ben! Mommy gave me ice cream, he hollered gleefully. It’s yummy! In lightning fast speed, I suddenly had three tongues wagging in my face. We heard there was ice cream, they said in unison. We want some, too!
The contents of my Styrofoam cup quickly disappeared (graham cracker ice cream from the newly discovered ice cream place near our house, if you were wondering,) and I sent my little monsters back upstairs to pretend to re-brush their teeth.
Perplexed, I sat trying to analyze my youngest son’s behavior: Would the ice cream not have tasted as good to him had he not announced it to his siblings? He’s smart enough to know that the more they get, the less there is for him. Was half of the joy rubbing it in their faces, on the off chance that I wouldn’t give them a spoonful as well? Or, was it purely altruistic of him, in which case I can’t really relate at all. I have no idea.
I do want to point out something to my little brother: That ice cream was really good. And you didn’t get to have any. Just so you know.

That was so kind of him to share the news of free ice cream! I was a nice little sibling so I would have done the same. I cannot say the same for my brother…

LOL, my kids do the SAME thing. I think they just want to share though, because the other day I gave my oldest the last bite of my granola bar and he was heartbroken that his little brother couldn’t have any. Cuties, indeed.

This is one of the reasons why I hated being an only child.
I think my kids would have kept the ice cream to themselves, and only ‘fessed up the next morning when the ice cream was gone.

So funny. My oldest son does that too, sometimes, to bug his little brother. I wish my boys listened to me about brushing their teeth! OR anything for that matter!
My kids would have done the same thing – and then been shocked when I actually gave some to the other kid as well. It’s all about the “I got some and you didn’t” around here.

The moral of this story, Jill, is that you should buy extra ice-cream….So that you don’t have to share.
Wow. You are a much nicer Mom than me. I don’t share.
Clearly, I was a spoiled child.

It was probably a little bit of all of those reasons.

Sounds like my house. Little stinkers have no idea when to keep their mouths shut.
Whoa. This is exactly why I eat my ice cream on my neighbor’s deck. I get some strange looks, but at least the ice cream is all mine.

I think it was half, “neener, neener I got ice cream” and half nice kid. :)

That is hilarious. And so true. Even dirt tastes good if you can announce you got it before your siblings.

My teen has taken to eating out of the Starbucks or Ben & Jerry carton so that she doesn’t have to share with her siblings. It’s survival of the quickest around here.

I eat my ice cream out of coffee cups. It is much easier to hide from the kids that way!
Matt . . . . Mom’s calling and she has cookies for you.
And I think he just loved the fact that the little brother knew something/got something the older kids hadn’t.
I say he just wanted to share because his mommy is a good role model,

That is too funny! Same thing happens here…..it drives me crazy that I can’t enjoy any type of food without someone getting in my face & asking me for some. I quickly learned that the best time to have our special treats is when they are in bed =)
Graham cracker ice cream? I’m never heard of anything so heavenly.

Okay, so now I need to have that graham cracker ice cream or I’m going to die. And my unborn child is going to be crying IN UTERO. So there’s that. But I also wanted to say that you should never have your ice cream until the kids are already asleep, thereby eliminating the need to share with your children at all.

They love to annouce whenever they get something – I totally think that is more than half the joy…taunting your siblings. However, maybe when he is older he will get as much as he can until it is gone and then announce it to his siblings. Ugh!

Hmmmm…you must be a better mother than me. I would have told Evan it was ice cream that had wine in it and he couldn’t have any so he needs to trot on back to bed. More for me!

I agree, it was probably a little of both. Kids are so funny. Sorry they ate all of your ice cream. I would have been a mean mommy and not shared. :)

Sounds like Bruster’s to me! I love their graham cracker ice cream. And, yes, it IS all about rubbing it the siblings’ faces.
Lolli recently posted..Taking The Next Step with Your Photography
It’s definitely about rubbing it into their siblings’ faces! I, too, would have been a mean mommy and not shared. No one touches my treats! Of course, that’s probably why I’m carrying a few extra pounds! ;)

I think they were all having a good time with each other upstairs, so he wanted them all to have a good time with him downstairs and that could be had by eating your ice cream. Poor Mommy.
Okay, now I really, really want some ice cream.
Yes, it’s about saying, “Hey, look what mom gave ME and not YOU!” I was an expert in this. I’d recognize it anywhere.
The surest way in this house to get something announced to the world is to tell them not to say anything. However, even if I don’t remind them to keep it to themselves they still love rubbing it in their siblings faces. Sigh. Guess a mom can’t win.
