Make Your Own Birthday Cards

Greeting cards are one of the many things that I totally resent spending money on. They get ripped open and thrown in trash within seconds and at three or four bucks a pop, it’s such an enormous waste. Especially for kids.

I recently came up with a solution to this dilemma as we are heading into birthday party season: I found some great vintage birthday images and placed an order for business cards, using the image on the front and the back to fill in the to and from. Just punch a hole in the corner and tie on the gift. Easy, right? And cheap! The top 1 are designed as 2″x 2″ and the bottom is the typical 2″ x 3.5.”

I didn’t personalize them, since I didn’t know which of my kids they’d be from, but next time I may just put all of their names. If you want to snag mine, feel free by clicking to download, or easily make your own. There are so many copyright-free images once you look, and you could also use a photo of your child. How fun would that be? If I do say so myself.

Business cards are good, but I manage to send out some pretty neat cards using a company called “SendOutCards.” I wrote an article about them on my blog (link below) and it’s mainly business-centric, but we also use it a lot for personal use. It is a GREAT system and I really spend less than $1 per card I send. I just go to a web site, type up what I want to say, and add a signature or even put it in my own handwriting.

Here’s the post on it:

http://webandyou.avelient.com/2009/06/18/send-out-cards-keeping-in-touch-with-customers/

And if you click on the link, you’ll go to my own page on SendOutCards, where you can sign up for a guest account (don’t worry, only I would see the info) and send a couple of cards to try out for free (since I now know you like free).

Let me know what you think if you decide to try it out!

We had a bunch of stickers printed up by Expressionary.com with a cute graphic and a message that says, “A Gift from the Luce Household.” Wrap a present in white tissue and slap one on–so easy.

I’ve done this, but I just printed it out on card stock paper and cut it and attached it the same way. I really like to do this for gift bags. But I usually do it because I forget the card. I never really thought about it saving money. LOL

I absolutely hate cards too and thus I usually leave them off my gift and then people get all mad that you didn’t write out something thoughtful. I have saved maybe 4 cards in my life and the rest of them just get thrown out. Whatta waste!

These are awesome though Jill… we’ll be on vacation next week but after we get back I will email you to plan out a Lemongrass trip.

Oh Jill this is a stroke of genious! It would even be a really cool thing to do for holiday gift tags, too. I’m forever spending on those. I like to wrap and sometimes a cool tag makes the ensamble.

I found some weird vintage cardstock in the free-bin at my local art store that I draw on until I feel like it looks like a Birthday/Mother’s Day/Valentine’s Day card. I agree that it’s total bunk that a piece of paper with Happy Birthday! printed on it with a cute picture should cost $4.

Totally awesome idea. I will pass it on to everyone. Kids cards are probably the biggest waste of money. I too resent having to buy them. Lately, I go to discount places and get them for .50-$1.

This is a brilliant idea : ) So, I am the absolute WORST gift giver because I not only do not buy cards, I make Kaish draw a picture on an index card and throw it in the gift box. Can you even believe that? Crazy, right? : )

Great one. Since my son has started Kinder, I have a feeling that these little cards would come in really handy. I can only imagine the “fun” parties we are going to be invited to now.

BTW. Last week end somebody seriously called me *scary* because I actually have a backbone. I think I should take it as a complement. Or that’s what I am telling myself…

From one scary mommy to another: Greetings!! :)
