Do you have a Facebook fan page?
I do, I do! It took me way too long to build, but now that it’s up and running, I’m so glad that I took the time to put it together.
What’s so great about it, you ask? First of all, when people fan your page, it shows up in their updates. Their friends are then introduced to your page, giving you the opportunity to make them blog readers. There are no annoying friends requests to approve, and the growth seems to happen organically.
You’ll need to decide if you want to create a separate Facebook blogging account, so that your fan page can be linked to that one, rather than your personal page. I went this route and am happy that I did– you can still suggest all of your friends become your fans, but you won’t be bombarding RL people with bloggy stuff. Plus, if you want to keep your name private, this is a good way to do it. Otherwise, just link the page to your existing account. When you’re ready, create your fan page by clicking here.
Once your page is created, you can also personalize your landing page. Play around with Facebook’s applications (found under Edit your page) to make your page as unique as your blog.
Once your page is set up, make it easy to find by adding a “like” box right on your page. You can also add a “like” button to each post and even allow people to comment with their Facebook profile right on your page. All of those options can be found here.
Let me know if you have a page, too!
{This has been updated to comply with Facebook’s new policies. You can do a whole lot less than you used to be able to, but I hear that they are working on ways to incorporate Facebook and WordPress more, which should be interesting.}

I just started my fan page on yesterday afternoon! I could NOT manage all the lists and friend requests and figuring out privacy issues… And it allows people who don’t WANT to be friends with me (THE HORROR) to be a fan of my blog. And already friends of friends and strangers are fanning it! I’m so excited! And it makes getting my blog posts out there so much easier. I’ve also added some funny photos. I love it!
On an aside: I am so glad that I made my fan page but I think that timing is important. If I had done it immediately, I think that my friends would have been overwhelmed with my blog-y neediness. I wanted to have enough posts so people could actually be FANS. I thought that the key to inspiring people I didn’t know to fan is having something to read when they check out what their friends are doing. And after my friends got to know my blog, they were more than happy (un-prodded for the most part ;) to invite their friends to become fans. (I didn’t have to wait that long to create it… Two and a half months or so but I do post daily.)
I am going to look into adding my favorite posts! Thanks!

Now, *that’s* the hard part. Bribe your friends to suggest your page to their friends? Put your page in your e-mail auto signature? Put it at the bottom of every post? I wish I had a magic answer for that one.
I’m definitely going to do this… but, not today… my blog goes to my Facebook page under Notes and I’ve wanted to get it out of there, so this is a great article… Definitely want a Fan page and a business page. Thanks for sharing both the instructions.

Thanks Jill – I’ve been keen to make a facebook page for my website for AGES, but I needed a simple set of instructions and some motivation … both found here. Thanks!
Question for you- what do you decide to put on FB vs Twitter vs blog?
Thanks :)

Awesome! I pretty much limit Facebook to one or two posts a day and spend more time on twitter. I’ll link to my posts, and maybe an additional thought. More than that tends to be too much. :)
PS. Please ‘like’ me. My god, does that sound desperate. I’m not, I promise ;)

Thanks for the short and sweet of the nitty-gritty. FB documentation is way to distracting and makes everything seem so much harder then it really is. Have a great day :)

Thanks for the tips. I’m just starting out. It is imperative for me that I remain anonymous so I was trying to figure out how to use facebook as a separate identity than my actual personal page (which I hate — especially after I found out my Ex’s GF and I have One Mutual Friend http://wp.me/p1sXPw-h). So I think I’ll try setting up something completely different as you suggested. Thanks.
Your advice has been great. Just for that, I may just order a Scary Mommy t-shirt. My FB fan page is: http://www.facebook.com/Mommyinlaw
I upload links to my new blog posts on both my personal and my blog FB pages. Gives me just one more way to reach people… and friends have reposted on THEIR fb walls giving me even more visibility.
It’s slow going but going nonetheless!!!
Great advice here. :)
