Cabin Fever

Once upon a time, we left the house. The kids went to school and my husband went to work. We got dressed and ran errands and interacted with people other than immediate family. We wore something other than what we slept in the night before (well, some of us did, anyway) and actually brushed our hair. We had mail delivered. Pizza, too. We got fresh air. We saw sun.

Now?

We’ve all gone fucking crazy.

We are snowed in right now. 5 boys are screaming and wrestling in the living room. I suggested a rousing round of the Quiet Game. That did not go over so well…

I feel really sorry for your kids, instead of looking at Mother Nature’s snow ordel as a chance to slow down and be with your children, you are going crazy just being at home with them for two days. As a mother of five and a homeschooling Mother, at that, I don’t get it. Why have kids if you just want to ship them out and let someone else raise them? What’s wrong with you?

Reply

72 thepsychobabble February 15, 2010 at 11:48 pm

If I were more of a meddlesome holier-than-thou sort of person, I would ask what’s wrong with you? Why would you be content to have no identity outside of your family? Why would you choose to risk your children’s education and social skills?
But, since I realize that my way of parenting is not the only right way of parenting, and since I really don’t care how you parent your children(short of abuse, of course), I’m not going to ask that sort of thing.

You know I am a homeschool mom too. I have three children and we live in the Eastern Panhandle of WV. Here we got 30″ or more of snow and were not able to get out for nearly a week including my husband (he didn’t go to work). I love being with my kids all day but when you feel forced to stay inside and can’t make it to extracurricular activities, etc and see the world more than just through your window it can drive a mom crazy – and the kids and the husband too. Eventually my 9 and 10 yr old were asking “What’s the point of snow? Can’t we just get a few inches? This is too much.” I hardly doubt that ScaryMommy is not enjoying her time with her kids but at a certain point the snow is crusted over and you have no choice to be stuck inside with the same people day in and day out. Everyone experiences “cabin fever” once in a while. ScaryMommy, thanks for keeping it REAL. Most moms (homeschooling or not) love their kids but life is never rosy and cheery every minute of everyday!

I thought with global warming America should all be toasted at 120 degrees F and that there wouldn’t be a drop of moisture in sight. So what you’re experiencing just must be some sort of mirage. Right?
No, really, I’m sorry you guys are having that much snow. I mean, that’s really too much of a good thing. I hope it slows down so the ground can soak it all in and start to dry up a little before planting season comes, so the roots of the produce plants won’t rot in the ground from too much moisture, or so everything doesn’t get some moldy blight from all the moisture still saturating the ground.
I really think it would be a wise idea for anyone living back east to stock up on canned fruit and vegetables for spring, summer, fall and winter next year, in case the farmers don’t have great crops from all this moisture stuck in the ground.

Worse than three kids jumping up and down in a cot singing la la la, is the lack of pizza delivery – how the hell are you surviving?

Things are getting rather crazy in our house, too – and I only have one kid to try to keep entertained! ;) I’m ready for Spring – but apparently Mother Nature is cackling wickedly as she’s conjuring up more snow for next week – last I heard it’s another 12 inches. After 2 storms throwing down a total of 54 inches where we are, I really don’t want anymore. I wonder if we could do a sun dance or something? :)

The crazies never go away but eventually, as the kids get older, we start brushing our teeth and wearing clothes we didn’t sleep in last night. Sometimes, on special occasions, we do both on the same day!
Hang in there and enjoy them before they turn into evil teenagers, designed to break you, and leave you curled up and twitching on the floor, next to the cat food bowl, …begging for mercy.
Good times ahead.

Well it’s a little late in the game for me to post this but I feel as though the snow is JUST starting to melt enough for sanitation pick up, mail and school to finally resume business. We are in Mt. Pleasant (NW) and it took seven days for us to see a plow. Something like the BOY and the MAN from The Road but we managed to survive!

Oh. I hear you. We’re all sitting around in our own filth while the laundry piles up on this, our 6th snow day of the winter. I have all the time in the world to do the laundry…but I refuse to do it. I mean, really? What’s the point? We’ve got nowhere to go. Nothing to do or see. *sigh*

I don’t know how your east cost mommies are handling this weather. It’s too much to bear being inside that long! Trapped. I hope you see the sun soon and the outside!!
