Lily loves to draw. Loves it. I recognize in her the same passion I had when I was her age and it thrills me. Eager to help foster this love of the arts, I’ve had her drawings printed on t-shirts and plates and allow her to wallpaper her room with her creations, just as I [...]
I was ready to haul Lily off to the shrink when I caught a glimpse of this recent drawing. Were my inappropriate movie choices beginning to manifest themselves in her sweet brain? Had she accidentally caught the evening news when I thought she was sleeping soundly in my room? Did Halloween have a lasting impact [...]
Growing up, my brother and I didn’t have the best of relationships. He was the typical pesky little brother and I was a total bitch. The moments when we actually got along were incredibly few and far between. Most times, they involved me bossing him around and him relishing the attention that I was briefly [...]
I have often marveled at how children choose the most basic items to entertain themselves. The boxes and bubble wrap that contain birthday presents are always far more interesting than the gifts tucked that are inside. Pots and pans create better music than any store bought instruments and hours can be spent pouring water [...]
Lily: I really need some more money. I don’t have enough.
Me: OK, you can do some chores. The playroom needs cleaning, your shoes can be straightened up and Penelope needs to be fed.
Lily: Nah, I don’t want to do those kinds of chores. I could draw you a picture. You know how people pay artists [...]
Alternatively titled: Why my son is no longer allowed to use markers.
(And, yes, I nearly had a heart attack before spotting the bright red marker in his brother’s hand.)
Lily has a little Fisher Price camera, given to her a few years ago by her Uncle (best gift ever.) It just eats batteries, though, so we alternate between phases of it being used constantly and it being buried in her closet, dead and useless. Every few months, Lily uncovers it and I replace the [...]
Everyday, Lily and Ben come home from school proudly clutching their latest works of art. Some are, indeed, masterpieces. I just adore Lily’s little hearts, flowers and people–they never cease to bring a smile to my face. Ben’s earnest attempt at “writing” his name is precious and I love his explanations of what he’s presenting [...]
First, she drew the shrinking head character from Beetle Juice. Sure, that was pure coincidence. But this, this is too much:
She claims they’re just hands, but it appears otherwise. Should I be concerned, or just groom her for film school? Clearly, she’s gifted beyond her years. And, perhaps, a tiny bit disturbed.
Clearly, the kid’s on to something here. He’s a Jackson Pollock for the preschool generation. Just look at his color choices, his composition, his sense of movement… he’s a natural! How do we start raking in the dough?
(And try this–it’s almost as much fun as the real thing.)
All day, I long for a few moments of peace and quiet. When I get them, I’m always suspicious– inevitably, someone is up to no good. Traces of evidence can usually be found with some novice detective work: Hand soap poured into the toilet produces a whole lot of bubbles, markers on arms don’t rub [...]
