How to Personalize Your Facebook Landing Page

It’s super easy to make your Facebook landing page (the page that people automatically are directed) stand out from the crowd. Here’s how:

1. Create your image in Photoshop or a similar application. The image should measure 750 pixels across. Here’s mine:

2. Code your image. Here is the formula. Simply plug in your info where the caps are. <a href=”YOURSITEURL” target=”href=” com=”"><img alt=”YOURSITENAME” src=”YOURIMAGEURL” /></a>

3. In Facebook, click “Edit Page” under your profile image;

2. Under “Applications,” find “More Applications” and select “Browse more”;

3. Enter “Static FBML” and hit enter;

4. Go to the Static FBML application from the search results page and click “Add to my Page” in the upper left column;

5. Back on your profile page, click “Edit Page”;

6. Find the “Static FBML” link, click the pencil icon and select “Edit”;

7. Enter the title text in the “Box Title” field. I used “Welcome” for my landing page;

8. Enter the HTML code that you created in the “FBML” field;

9. Under your tabs, add a tab for “Welcome” and delete “Boxes” tab;

10. Select “Edit Page” on your profile page and click “Wall Settings.” Find “Default Landing Tab for Everyone Else” and choose the page you just created.

That’s it! You have your new landing page!

Hello!

I tried to follow these instructions, but with the big FB change last week, there is no Browse More option. I tried doing a search but nothing came up. Any suggestions?

It’s there- just checked! It’s the last option at the page. Check again?

I found it. Thanks.

Ok, Scary Mommy. I asked you on Twitter, but I don’t think you’re online. I’m hoping you’ll check your comments pretty soon. I have a question.

I created a FB page for my blog, but in order to link it to twitter I had to create a personal page, too.

When I post to other pages it posts as my personal profile rather than my blog one. How/can I change this?

5 Scary Mommy February 16, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Hmmm. I don’t *think* you can post to other pages under your fan identity. I believe that the fan page isn’t an account which can comment. Does that make sense?

Jill you are right but i so wish you could! It stinks that sometimes people don’t know who my real name is since I can’t post from my fan page. I have sent a request to facebook though! Seems like a simple fix since you can comment on your own page as your blog!

I’m glad you did that– it should be!!

This is great info. I was JUST googling FBML because my marketing consultant told me about it today. Yours is awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Trying this, but “FBML” page not showing up under “Default landing page…”. Any suggestions?

11 unfinishedperson February 17, 2010 at 11:22 am

It is showing up under “Boxes” but not as a separate “Welcome” Page.

12 unfinishedperson February 17, 2010 at 11:26 am

Never mind figured out on my own…one piece missing: Have to add tab for “Welcome” and delete “Boxes” tab.

13 Scary Mommy February 17, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Oops! Sorry about that! Glad you figured it out!!

Here it is. I already had a page, but it’s good to have some tips from someone else like yourself. I also Tweeted about your tips, just fyi to let others know. My sister over at Boondock Ramblings let me know originally about your tips, since she also is setting up a fan page for her blog and a new business.

This looks so complicated. Hold me.

It’s really not so bad. I promise!!!

When I put the location of my image (Photobucket) into the HTML provided I get an error message telling me my photobucket pic is unavailable or has been moved.

Any ideas?

18 Sunday Stilwell February 20, 2010 at 8:16 am

AHA! I fixed it!
I had to use the HTML code under the image in Photobucket instead of the direct link. Its a little different from your tutorial but it got the job done.

Yeah ME!

Awesome! Go, you!! :)

Hey Jill, I got everything to work but I have some extra symbols and stuff with my picture under my welcome tab.

Hi,

So, under the rubric of “no question is a stupid question,” here’s mine:

2. Code your image. Here is the formula. Simply plug in your info where the caps are.

What, EXACTLY goes into the YOURSITEURL and YOURIMAGEURL text? The full http:// name? As for the image, I have JPEG icons that I want to use, just in my hard drive’s images file — can’t figure out what the code for that. Do I need to upload them to a website like Flickr?

Also, the links to some of your other tips on Facebook fan pages are no longer available (404ed). Anyways getting them back up? I’m especially interested in figuring out how to have blog posts (from WordPress) automatically load. At one point you had a post about adding your favorite posts.

In any case, thanks so much for your generosity with information!

Yes, for the code it’s the whole http://www….
The image should be hosted somewhere, whether it’s Flickr or your blog host or wherever.

And, I just updated the links- sorry about that!!

Reason I love you today: I spent like 2 hours trying to figure out a Facebook landing page, and though it’s far from great, it’s not crap because of you. So there’s that.

There’s also the blog design. But that’s every day love.

Oh, and your logo.

But that’s less love and more envy.

What can I say, every relationship has issues.

Gotta use iframes now, people! (Something new to figure out, ha, ha.) But try these tools @: http://assemblyline.lujure.com/ or http://apps.iframeengine.com/offer/ife1/index.php
Hope that helps!

Why can’t you upload a pic from your hard drive into FB iframes?

Also, I’m having a hard time finding the link on photobucket and flickr/

thanks!
