I never got on board with the whole Twilight thing. First of all, the whole vampire thing just doesn’t do it for me, but more so, the grown women lusting after teenagers always skeeved me out a little. I mean, I get it– Jordan Catalano will always hold a special place in my heart, but once you hit your mid-thirties, I think it’s time to let go of the whole high school fantasy thing. Maybe it’s just me. It certainly seems like it.
The new issue of GQ came out today and the cover story is on Glee. Glee, the show I so adore and allow my children to watch the episodes I deem acceptable for their eyes. They love the music and the innuendos go completely over their heads. Glee, the show whose CDs helped us survive a 20 hour drive to Florida last winter and whose episodes fill my DVR. The show who made theater geeks cool and the rest of us wish we’d sung in high school. The show filled with awkwardness and insecurities and all the things high school should be, along with some Broadway show tunes and top 40 hits thrown in.
Take a look at the photos accompanying the article…

What do you think?
I’ll tell you my thoughts: What the fuck???
Yes, it’s an adult magazine, but these kids play high school students, for crying out loud. Young high school students. They are in character, in a school, promoting their show about high school students. There is nothing subtle or suggestive about these– they make Britney’s high school video look like it was performed by a nun. Why is it necessary to promote the show like this?
I just went through four Wonder Woman costumes for my six year old before I found one that didn’t make her look like a five dollar whore, and I had to order a size eight that’s too big to accomplish that. She’s a freaking first grader– who designs these costumes? Who approved these photos? Who thinks it’s ok to sexualize kids like this?
I don’t. And if that makes me some sort of prude, so be it. I’ve certainly been called worse.

I dunno dude. It’s a magazine for adults, and they are adults.

Yes, I agree, but as actors on a show about kids I think they have a responsibility to be more selective about where they promote themselves. I blame them, not the magazine.
I completely disagree.
Glee is particularly known for pushing boundaries and being a sexy show. It isn’t like these are actors from the Fresh Beat Band posing in their underwear.
I think there’s a huge distinction between KIDS and near-adults on a TV show who actively HAVE SEX on that TV show.
Maria recently posted..Mixed Bag
I agree. When I watch GLEE, I blush. My teenager watches it and sometimes I’m all like….”UHMMMMM!! Noooo!!!!” Just because it’s a show ABOUT teenagers doesn’t mean it’s MEANT for teenagers/kids. So these pictures don’t surprise me one bit and I think they go right along with the show.

jill, i’m with you, but i also see the flip side of this… my gut says “WTF” but my head says, “their show is on FOX, it was only a matter of time.”
I find myself really saddened by these photos. Yes, I know it’s GQ magazine with a (primarily) male adult audience. Yes, I watch the show with my 15 year old daughter. I think the show sends some really powerful, good messages – especially about gay acceptance – to teens. (My favorite character is Kurt’s father.) And sometimes it pushes my comfort level on displays of sexuality for an 8pm show…and I glance sideways at my teen to see her reaction. I think these photos would have bothered me less if the actors were posing as themselves – Lea, Diana, Cory – in provocative outfits, rather than as Quinn, Fin, and Rachel. This shoot just amped the show’s sexuality way up in my opinion. Yes, these are adult actors and they can do whatever they want. I wish they hadn’t done this.

I agree. “gleeks” are all the hype, and if they know the actors are in a magazine, they are going to want to buy it.

i agree with maria. some costumes for girls are totally inappropriate but what does that have to do with this?
and those actresses and the actor in the shoot? the two women are 24 and the guy is 28. if they want to pose like that in an adult magazine, which GQ is, so be it. it is not their job (nor the job of the creators of glee or the PR people that signed off on this) to be role models or even worried about what our children are exposed to.
i’ve never really watched a full episode of glee, but i never thought it was a show for anyone under junior high age, at the very least. the creator did nip/tuck. ’nuff said.
sorry scary mommy…i’m gonna have to respectfully disagree on this one.
No need to apologize. I’m cool with respectfully disagreeing. :)
ok, cool. i just usually agree with you on most everything….so now i’m totally discombobulated! :)
Oh what a bummer, I am surprised these talented girls would sell themselves out like that…you don’t see dude in his skivvies, what gives?
I guess we get to see that in Playgirl?
The fact that the girls are half nekkid and the guy has all his clothes on is what disturbs me. The message here is that girls are boytoys. At least Madonna’s male dancers were also in their skivvies.
I think I must be a major prude because my husband and I watch Glee and wonder to each other: is this meant for high school kids? Our conclusion is that it surely is not. Still I would have watched it as a kid and I turned out okay even with all of these things warping my mind. Fatal Attraction at age 9 among them.
They do take convincing whore pictures, the Glee girls.

Okay, I see your point. The pictures are very trashy. However, it is GQ, which is not known for its tasteful pics of librarians in turtlenecks. I guess this is another reason I’m glad we turned off the cable TV…
I get your point and if it was People mag or Seventeen I might be more upset, but GQ is an adult mag. Not as in Playboy adult but one usually restricted to adults.
Was it necessary, probably not but I suppose they are trying to broaden their audience. Let’s hope it doesn’t blow up in their faces.

Pretty sure if I looked like that I’d gladly be taking my clothes off for GQ too. It’s not a magazine for kids.
Look at Jessie from Saved By The Bell…wholesome nerd on show…five dollar whore in the movies.
It’s totally acceptable.

But that was yeaaars later. When she played Jessie she *was* Jessie. It’s once the show went off the air that she become the five dollar whore. It seems different to me.
I think what’s sad is that the show is MAD popular without having to do this. I don’t know why they felt it was necessary, but I guess I’m so used to celebrities taking their clothes off that I no longer even think twice about it. “Oh you want to look like a whore?? Sweet. Have fun!”

I don’t about you, but the show has lost some of it’s “sparkle” for me this season?
I totally agree. They are trying way too hard and it shows.
I have to disagree. These ‘kids’ are adults and this is a magazine for adults. We must be able to distinguish between what’s not real (the show GLEE) and real (these people are actors doing a magazine story).
I totally get it. Bed time is at 8 for mu boys and I am a loyal glee watcher and before I knew it Britney was underneath Santna and my kids were into question mode and not bedtime. I think these pics make me think maybe if they are going this direction the show should air the sametime SVU does or perhaps my kids should go to bed earlier.

Wait a second. So all the episodes where Quinn is under Puck or Rachel is under Finn it’s ok?
This is a magazine with ADULTS posing FOR adults. As far as I know, GQ’s target demographic is 18-40 year old MEN. And Lea Michelle and Dianna Agron are adults.
Filter the tv viewing fine, but when your littles are subscribing to GQ the problem isn’t with Glee.
kim recently posted..Day 7 – 30 Days of Truth
Of course they won’t be reading the magazine, but it’s on the grocery store shelves and under google images and is now attached to the show. I loved that the show was geeky and tame and now it’s losing the charm. Or, lost it, I should say.
So geeks can’t be beautiful and sexy? Is that it? Because the fact that it’s under google images is a poor excuse, because so are a lot of other sexual images. Google Miley Cyrus for crying out loud.
Why is sex so scary?
And the initial point to my question was really why is it the sex scene between Santana and Brittany more of an issue to Elizabeth_N than any of the previous scenes between the straight characters?
kim recently posted..Day 7 – 30 Days of Truth
For the record, I think Miley Cyrus is a horrible role model and I can’t stand her.
I can’t speak for Elizabeth, but Santana & Brittany didn’t bother me. In general, I miss the innocence of the first season. There are shows I watch for their raciness- Glee just wasn’t one of them.
I can accept that. I just think that the idea that Glee is a kids show has always been a misguided one, and it really was never “tame”. As another commenter on another site mentioned, one of the first episodes had Emma telling a female character that her lack of a gag reflex would serve her well later. So my guess is that a lot of that undertone has been missed by people distracted by the singing and dancing and now that people are paying more attention they are catching the “raciness” of the show.
kim recently posted..Day 7 – 30 Days of Truth
I think what is worrysome is that there are kids out there that “google” Glee all the time and they will end up with these imagines now. Just because they are innocently looking for some Glee information etc.
Will they show up in Playboy next?
I completely agree with you! Yes GQ is for adults but these pics will be all over the place in no time! And kids will look at these and think it is ok to look and act like this. And that is not acceptable. Like it or not these “Glee” kids are now role models!
i disagree. it is our job as parents to teach our children what is age-appropriate to wear and an age-appropriate way to act so that when they (unfortunately) happen upon such images they have the values in place to say “i really like that show BUT i know that it isn’t ok to act like that”.
and these glee “kids” (which are adults and actors, btw) are not role models. they are actors, playing a role. we lessen our power and influence as parents when we start labeling entertainers as role models. WE are our children’s biggest role models.
We should be our children’s biggest role models, and we hope that we are, but that doesn’t mean that we are in actuality. Kids pick their own role models and at a certain point they are going to turn to people other than their parents. At that point we of course hope we’ve taught them well enough that they choose wisely, but that doesn’t mean they will, or they are old enough to discern what is appropriate and what isn’t. When a young girl sees someone from a tv show that she admires dressed like this in the checkout aisle at the grocery story, part of her is going to think it is ok.
Jennifer recently posted..God Bless Texas
I agree, we should be our children’s role models & I also agree that we don’t get to pick their role models for them, they do. If a young girl likes that particular celebrity, she’s going to try to be like them as best she can. I mean, don’t we all do that? Don’t we have some actress we like & dress ourselves similarily? So if our children pick these type of people as their role models then they grow up to be just like them no matter what we say cause what teenager listens to their parents? So what kind of role models do you think these girls had growing up? Apparently ones who bared their bods cause that is what they are doing now. It def. wasn’t their parents or they had horrible parents. It’s been a slow degeneration in history. So now it’s the norm for 20 something girls to bare all & barely anyone thinks twice anymore, desensitization anyone?
Kayli recently posted..A Lil Somethin from a New Bloggy Friend
I think the issue regarding appropriate role models is huge, but I disagree with the point being made here. These entertainers–actors, actresses–aren’t the role models people are questioning here. The role models being questioned here are the CHARACTERS these entertainers play on TV. And I, for one, know that I don’t want my child or my students looking up to fictional characters for guidance.
The thing about these photos is that we must COMMUNICATE with our children. Plain and simple.

I guess GQ thought that they wouldn’t sell a lot of copies if they didn’t step it up a notch.
Oh and costumes are crazy these days! Have you seen what Alice in Wonderland looks like for an adult?! You can’t sneeze in that thing without showing your goods! Women to little girls costumes are getting smaller and smaller.

Two thoughts:
1) My boys are 4, I don’t let them watch Glee. I know other parents whose toddlers watch, but I don’t deem it appropriate for 4 year olds. If my boys were 10, I still don’t think I’d let them watch Glee. Maybe if they were teenagers I would let them, but I’m not sure I’d be comfortable with it.
2) At the same time, I have no problems with these photos. Do I think they are tasteless? Yes. But I’ve seen Lea Michele in less clothing in other photos. These are adults in their 20s and this is a magazine for adults.
My kids watch it for the music. I watch the episodes first and decide if I’m comfortable with it and most of the story line goes completely over their heads. If they were 9 or 10, I wouldn’t be ok with it.
I get the whole “adult magazine thing”, but when the show is centered around high school kids, this paints a bad picture, IMO.

While I’m excited (ok, giddy) for the Rocky Horror episode next week, I’m really curious how a high school glee club is going to portray a Sweet Transvestite from Transexual Transylvania in the 8pm time slot.
And I agree the spread is a little over the top. But, like Maria mentioned, it’s in GQ, which fewer kids are likely to read (although, Glee on the cover might entice them). I thought GQ was a little classier than Maxim, but maybe not.
Good Grief! I can’t believe the poses…I mean..wow…(wait I already said wow on Twitter) I just think that when portraying minors on TV or the movies there should be some things that are off limits…and a minors sexuality is one of those things.
If your babies are reading GQ, there are so many other issues. This mag is for MEN, not your babies. They are grown ass women and can do and pose as they please.

Totally agree with you…WTF??? It’s not enough that we’ve turned into a country of media whores, but now we can’t even have a “wholesome” television show without some perv who owns a magazine coming along and saying “hey, I can totally make you sluttier.” Then the poor kids who are already being told how awesome they are (and who couldn’t get addicted to that?) totally buy into it, put on a MAJOR push-up bra, and spread their legs.
I also “get” that it’s an adult magazine, but the images are out there and you can’t take those back once younger eyes gaze upon that at the grocery store. The glossiness of the cover is enough to drag them in!
I dunno either. See, I wouldn’t let my kids watch Glee because, well it’s adults portraying teenagers and I have a whole stick up my butt about that anyway.
But I’d agree with the other peeps—it’s an adult magazine for adults. And these actors are adults too. They have careers to think about. It’s ain’t like they’re 17 and doing this (I’m looking at YOU MILEY CIRUS).
And heck, if I had their bodies, I’d have my ass photographed every chance that came my way.
Jen recently posted..Carnival Party- In Pictures
If they have careers to think about then they should be doing the complete opposite. To me, this ruins their reputation. I’ve never watched the show, don’t even know who these people are but the fact that they’re willing to pose this close to nude & in such provacative positions shows me to they have no self respect & are not good decision makers when it comes to their so called “career”. If they’re doing this to get further in their career then they might as well just be models for playboy or head on over to the nearest strip club & apply there cause that’s the kind of “career” these photos will get you.
Don’t even start me on the guy being fully clothed, let’s just objectify women more shall we?
If I had that body, I wouldn’t be caught dead in outfits, excuse me, 4 inches of clothing like that nor would I have someone photograph me then put it in a magazine for all the world to see.
But what can I say, I’m traditional, I have morals, I have values. I respect myself & I know I don’t have to do those types of things to get ahead in this world.

Probably not, and I’m not even close to a prude (plus my kids are too little to watch it anyway).
But I also had to laugh at your Jordan Catalano reference. My hubby ran into Jared Leto in Las Vegas and he pulled the whole “Do you know who I am” shit with him. Hubby had NO CLUE (I would have known in an instant and asked for an autograph). Anyway, Jared got all huffy and pissed and almost started a fight with my hubby. Jared was kicked out of the bar. Ha.

Gah! I am so torn on this. The artist in me says, “This is awesome! Pushing boundaries! Go, go, go!” But the mom in me says, “Good gravy. I’m so glad my girls are too young to be using these girls as role models already.” So. Torn.

Adding to the comment chorus:
- GQ is NOT for kids. They shouldn’t be seeing that magazine regardless of who’s in it.
- The actors AREN’T kids, and I’m sure they’re a little sick of being seen only as teenagers. They’re not. They haven’t been for years. They’re adults doing an adult shoot for an adult magazine.
- Glee’s getting pretty risque – it’s gone beyond innuendo, people are showing skin, making out, mounting each other, grinding each other – so if you think that’s OK for your kids to see, I’m a little surprised you’re so upset about these photos that they WON’T see. And they should probably skip next week’s Rocky Horror episode.
We’ve skipped the whole season, actually. The first season I felt ok with them watching, but this one has gotten to be too much. Even I have standards. ;)
I agree, GQ is an adult magazine and most kids won’t see the photos via GQ but since every news program has done a segment on the “Glee Girls in GQ” at 5, 6 & 11 anyone without access to the magazine can now GOOGLE the images on their Smartphone, which most kids have. And as far as the actors being sick of being only seen as teenagers, well guess what … thats who they’re portraying and most 13, 14 year olds don’t get that they’re Adults. My daughter, who’s 13 was recently knocked off her feet because she read that the guy who plays a 19 year old college student on a Disney show is really THIRTY THREE YEARS OLD!!! She truly believed he was 19.
I think Glee is a bit racy to begin with. I mean not over the top, but girl on girl action… talking about losing their virginity- etc… I dont watch it with my son because I never know what twist the story line will take — BUT, I do think the pics are a little over the top – esp for GQ.

I don’t know, they are of adult age and it is an adult magazine. However, I do agree with you that since their characters are highschoolers it is a bit inapproriate. What I am surprised at is that someone from Glee signed off on this. These actors are paid very well to portray high school students and should demonstrate some discretion while they have the good fortune to be on such a popular show.
While I’m sure none of the mom’s who watch are going to run out and buy GQ for the little children to flip through, any child or teen who knows how to Google is going to see these pictures.

I 100% agree with you. EVEN though the actors themselves are adults, they PLAY high school kids. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Sadie posing like that in high school. So I too say, what the fuck???
Have any of you seen the show? The entire show constantly revolves around sex. As do the thoughts of teenagers. The pics are tasteless, yes, but some parts of the show are too. I let my kids watch the first few shows, then realized how “sexy” it was and had to explain how it was a grown-up show and they could watch it when they were older. But these pics are no more trashy than that Britney/Brittany episode. Love the show, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for kids.
Oh, I think it’s so much more trashy. Maybe it’s just because I like Rachel virginal— the others can be sluts, but Rachel just isn’t. Or, she shouldn’t be. I admit that perhaps I need more of a life for taking the show so seriously, but the photo spread just rubbed me the wrong way.
I respectfully submit my $.02
I teach high school and spend a chunk of time EACH AND EVERY DAY explaining to my students why it is NOT appropriate to discuss your 16 year-old sex life as an open forum before homeroom begins. Why it is frowned upon to talk openly about getting stoned before sex because it feels better. Why they should not be be discussing who might be the father of a friends baby as if they were chatting about the lunch menu.
I have been struggling everyday with trying to reach these kids and make them understand what message this kind of talk sends to people who don’t know them.
I speak to them about stereotypes and judgements, explaining how they will have to work against these ideas to prove them wrong but then I see this…
I just want to cry. I want to give up and cry.
not for my kids, or even “your” kids – because anyone here on this forum most likely cares enough about their children to have a discussion and explain that TV is not real.
My sadness is for the kids who have no “good, quality role models” – the kids who do look to TV, the media to guide them.
These are the kids I teach. And so…this makes me sad.

I find it interesting that so many of you commented that it is an adult magazine. As if that would deter our teens from buying it. There is no age restriction on the magazine. Any teen may purchase it.
I find the photos irresponsible. It isn’t as if they took these adults that play teens and put them in an adult situation, out of character and did a photo shoot. They kept them in character and sexed them up. As with most publications these days, they don’t give a damn the message it sends to our teenagers. They just sex it up and make a buck.

I think you make a good point. If this had been a “at home with Rachel” photoshoot with sexy pictures of her in an over sized men’s shirt for example…I don’t think it would have been as big of a deal.
The fact that they made their high school characters naughty is what is so obnoxious about it.

So with you on this one. I had this conversation with my family during the Brittany Spears episode. Yeah the show is geared towards adults and it’s mainly an adult audience (at least I hope so and that was their argument). BUT you’re totally right they play high school kids, real life high school kids see them and they’re cool, and pretty, and popular and sexy and they will try and emulate that.
Sorry if I’m being redundant I haven’t read the other comments yet.
I feel like the issue is the sexualization of girls. Because even if you set aside the premise of Glee, these adults have a high school backdrop and are dressed to look like high schoolers in the photo shoot. (which ties in with your references to the “sexy costumes” for little girls)
We are making being under 18 sexy when we should be letting them be kids who can explore their sexuality without having consumer-driven ideas of sex thrust upon them.
That’s the problem with the pictures. These aren’t sexy adult pictures. These are pictures of adults pretending to be fifteen year olds girls with their shirts ripped off and no pants on. And while it may seem sexy, I think it speaks to a deeper problem in our culture.

I struggle with articulating my feelings about the sex industry and the role it plays in our society, but my feelings are crystal clear on the depiction of schoolchildren as sexual objects for an audience of 18-40 year old men (the audience of the magazine) to look at. I don’t care whether the women portraying them are 18, 4o or 80 themselves; whether they are actors on a show about high school which amidst fantasy depicts some realistic issues of teenager’s lives, or not.
I would go further to say that this isn’t depiction of a 15 year old, but of a yet younger child. Who is sucking lollipops at 15? Check out the lack of pubic hair. These are pictures of adult women pretending to be sexually available, but still innocent children. Why is it okay for adults to think of a just pubescent child as a sexually available? I’m disappointed by the choice of the actors and the magazine.

I totally agree with Alex, I have read these comments and I must say the emotion I had when I saw the pictures and had not read the comments was DISGUSTED. I then read the comments and WOW, I am more disturbed by the lack of the WTF thought pattern because why does anyone think it is OK and we don’t see a need to be alarmed or SHOCKED by these choices. We should be outraged and speak up I have never watched Glee but I know how I feel about these pictures. The argument of they are adults and it is an adult magazine and geared for men I call BS on that, if I had adult sons I sure as hell would want them to be DISGUSTED with these pictures. My husband does not like looking at women trying to be sexy teens and he is all man! STOP telling teens (through adults) it is OK to behave this way. The major point I see here that is the truly valuable one is THEY ARE TRYING TO LOOK LIKE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THAT ARE NAUGHTY IN A SEXUAL WAY! If they were not in school gear then I would be just as discussed that women of influence behave this way! They continue to do because WE AS A COUNTRY ARE NO LONGER SHOCKED ! It is time to BE ENRAGED MOMS, DADS, sisters, brothers, aunts, and uncles, PEOPLE BE SHOCKED and have the WTF moments! I will show this to my sixteen year old today and discuss my feelings on it and listen to hers but she will be made aware of my OUTRAGE and so will any of her friends that I speak with because I will continue to defend the rights of my teenager to be a teenager! I am no prude and neither is God so I know that when I am with my husband sex is a beautiful wonderful God given gift! We will continue to teach our children sex is a wonderful part of life when you are married and that if you choose to pose that way it better be for your husband’s eyes only. Keep your sexuality private and when you get married it will be even better that you can truly say this is for us and us only! UGH Thanks for putting this out there it is another chance for a teachable moment!

Yes as I read it I can’t help but laugh at it too now, he isn’t going to laugh when he reads it as it is a super weird statement, I meant I know he obviously looks at other women and thinks someone is pretty (not more than me of course lol) but I meant there are grown men who look at GQ and aren’t happy to see provocative photos of women dressed as teens. He is going to come home sit at his computer and say across the house “you just couldn’t keep your thoughts to yourself could you” and I will say “you’re so right no blog hopping for 2 days, dinner is almost ready it is your favorite!”
My comment was a true fact and just simply that stating I do not know anything about the show other than they are in high school nowhere in my post to address the show’s merit or lack there of, I do not take a stance on the show at all! I merely shared my opinion on the photos. I also know that I can only speak for myself and when I lump in the we’s and shoulds I get that I am being over the top to expect everyone to see it my way but I get carried away when it speaks to my heart.
–>I agree. There was an issue with a Calvin Klein campaign back when I was in college of adult girls dressed to look like sexy teenagers in someone’s basement.
GQ is known for pushing the limits to sell magazines which is why Demi Moore was on the cover naked and pregnant twice.
Just like the Glee cover, if it hadn’t been controversial I would have never known they were there because I don’t buy the magazine.
GQ is the winner here by getting all this press and selling their magazines.

I have to disagree on this one, Bean. While, yes, they portray teenagers, they don’t need to be held to those characters all the time. If, as a twenty-something, they want to poke fun at the whole thing, that’s their right. Lord knows, I would have found it insanely confining if I had to behave like a prissy school kid in my twenties.
My husband agrees with you, and I see what you are saying, but it just feels icky to me.
If they didn’t want to portray teenagers, then they shouldn’t have accepted the roles in the first place.

It’s funny you should write this. My wife and I have recently quit Glee because of the “sexing-up” of the show. We miss the episodes that showed variety and musical style, rather than skin and sexy. We forgave the Madonna episode because, well, Madonna really IS a musical genre all her own. But everything after that, in our opinion, has only been downhill from there.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Here’s the rub for me – while this is a magazine for adults, and the actors posing are adults, they are PORTRAYING high school students. They are sexualizing minors to adults. They are making it seem okay for high school girls to be seen this way. Was the single male actor portrayed in a sexually explicit way? No. He even has a tie on in most of the photos for crying out loud. This is why our society thinks it’s okay to overtly sexualize young girls. And old(er) men, lusting after girls who appear to be in high school, is just gross.

glee was made by adults in their 30s for other adults in their 30s. it’s completely campy, over-the-top & hyper-sexual. always has been. it wasn’t ever a cutesy show that I would ever let a high schooler watch. of course, many do, but it isn’t the job of the producers or actors to police who watches the show. I guess it doesn’t bother me since my kids don’t watch the show & I know it wasn’t designed for them.
I’m really not sure how you can use “innocence” to describe Glee. Even the 1st season!
One of the main story lines was a cheerleader that was pregnant with her boyfriend’s best friend’s child. But she lied to the boyfriend and told him he managed to get her pregnant when he pre-ejaculated in a hot tub!
How is that innocent?
I don’t see anything wrong with the pictures. I have a 12 year old daughter and rather than try and hide something like this from her (which isn’t possible anyway), I just told her that these girls are not actually high schoolers, they are 24 year old adults and these are pictures that are not meant for teenagers. Period.
Kids are much more understanding and able to deal with this kind of stuff than most parents are willing give them credit for.
I am right there with you. It is getting ridiculous.
But they deem it okay because it is GQ, a men’s magazine. You do know it is like Playboy with clothes, right?
Have you walked down the costume aisle in the Halloween store this year? I don’t let my kids walk down that aisle in Target.

It’s an adult magazine and they ARE adults so on that point, I say – Let them be!. BUT, they are portrayed here as down right sexual adults in teenage clothes and that’s where the problem starts for me. In a perfect world, teens will not see or read this magazine but when they do it sends a message like – Glee gone Wild. In the adult world this is normal but when teens see this, they will definitely get the wrong idea. I say NO to this one. :)

Glee is about kids but is not FOR kids. The underlying theme of glee to it’s very core is teenage hormones. Did everyone forget the “Push It” performance of last year? or Finn’s premature ejaculation problem in the hot tub that caused him to think he got Quinn pregnant? Or how about the “Like a Virgin” skit that featured 3 different couples in the heat of the moment? or Britney and Santana talking about how “Sweet lady kisses are a nice break from scissoring” and Jacob getting caught naked, masturbating in the library?…. Sorry mommies of the world but Glee is for you, not for your kid. I’m just surprised that pictures like this weren’t taken before.
I don’t have a problem with these pictures being in an adult magazine. The actors are all in their 20′s and it’s not like they have ever been child stars. However, the pictures make me sad because I think these actors are so talented and it’s a shame that they have to be over-sexualized in a photo shoot when in real life they dress appropriately and act nothing like Lindsay Lohan. Also, I like Finn and all, but neither he nor Puck will ever compare to Jordan Catalano.

How is this show wholesome?!? The very first season had a cheerleader pregnant by her boyfriend’s best friend! Really?!? They are not high schoolers, they play them on tv. That to me, is like saying that someone that plays a doctor on tv shouldn’t be photographed smoking, b/c it isn’t agreeable to their character on the show.
These are grown adults and they are posing for an adult magazine. I don’t understand people’s issue with this. If your children are old enough to watch the show, then I would think they are old enough to be explained the fact that these are adult actors, who do adult things outside of the show.
That is really disappointing. I get the whole idea that they are really adults and not teenagers….but I still think that they should be a little more careful about the image. If the 3 actors had posed like that separately and they didn’t LOOK like they were in a school, I might feel differently.

I think it’s ironic that when sex is involved, a teenager suddenly becomes a child who can’t be exposed to subject matter only fit for those 18 or older. But, if that same teenager commits a crime, he/she is tried as an adult and considered mature enough to know what he/she was doing. Not the point you were trying to make, Jill, but it’s what has been rolling around in my head ever since these photos came out. That, and remembering that 25 years ago as a teenager, I was wearing a black bra covered by a lace shirt and garters under men’s boxer shorts ala Madonna. (Without my parents’ knowledge, of course – but the point is, teenagers are very sexualized, always have been, always will be, no matter what older generations want to believe.)
guess the demographics of family-friendly wasn’t working for them. Now horny teenagers have more discretionary income to spend, so let’s tap that market. Damn, now there’s nothing to watch if you want your tween kid to get out of middle school with her clothes on.
KMayer recently posted..Whats in a Name
Yes, it’s the TV show’s fault that middle-schoolers have no values. Parenting plays abolutely no part in the path these children have taken at all.
Seriously?!
Also, if people would actually READ THE ARTICLE along with the pictures they’d see that the show was NEVER billed as “family friendly”. The writers freely admit that it’s risque.
“I didn’t want to do a family show,” says Murphy. “I wanted to do my version of a family show. But we try to be as responsible as we can, because we know some young people watch. Some of the humor goes over their head, hopefully.”
PARENTS are mostly responsible for the amount of sex their children are exposed to, NOT TV SHOWS and not pictures in a magazine..

I scanned most of the comments and I am surprised that no one mentioned that the photographer, Terry Richardson, is known for shoots like these and has been in some trouble for his behavior with underage girls. All of his shoots look a little pervy. I would have to say that the PR people knew what they were in for when they signed off on the shoot. In addition to the nature of the photos, I think there are other issues at play here too. While the cover screams Cast of Glee, the photos show the white cast of glee, the skinny cast of glee…
I’ve only seen Glee a few times – I do like the singing and it makes me miss high school theater and choir. I’m sure there are millions of teenagers that watch this show and so even though GQ may be geared toward men, they will definitely pick it up because of who is on the cover and I don’t think the photos inside are appropriate. Which makes me sound old, I know. But, I just think in general that kids are trying to be adults way too fast. It is one reason I decided not to go into teaching after spending a year as a substitute teacher to try it out. The experience in the public high schools was scary! Anyway, I agree – what the?!!

I am very aware of what television shows my kids watch, what they read and what they listen to. It is part of the job. I wouldn’t let them watch Glee because it deals with things issues that I’d rather not get into with them.
But it is not like we don’t handle tough discussions as they come up. We have talked about why some kids have two mothers (I don’t care, doesn’t bother me in the slightest), why people kill each other, what a gas chamber is and whether boys have different size “tools.”
The latter is a discussion that I have had with both kids, but I digress. The point being that life is dynamic and you have to be prepared to roll with whatever comes. But, I don’t have to worry about pix like these because my kids don’t read GQ and even if they did I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it.
Not because I think it is trivial, but because if I do my job at home the kids know what is appropriate and what isn’t.

You hit the nail on the head with this one …. WTF!!!!! So disappointed.
I don’t agree. GQ is not for kids. And Glee is most definitley not for kids. I mean, come on, do you remember the first episode where the rival group did a performance to Amy Winehouse’s Rehab? and then followed that up with Push It? and then Bootyliciuos? + teen pregnancies, constant sexuality of all ages, a nurse giving kids drugs, everything that comes out of Jane Lynch’s mouth, stereotyping every type of person in the book, and on. If anything is inappropriate for kids, it’s that show. But for adults, yes, it’s a really good show with terrific writing. And Ryan Murphy is known for constantly pushing the boundaries of what can get on TV (Nip/Tuck seems almost PG now from when he launched that), so not of this is surprising.
The pictures, while entirely suggestive, are of adults in their 20s. Yes, they play HS kids on TV, but they aren’t kids. Was it in poor taste by GQ, perhaps. But Lea Michele has been photographed with much less on and even appeared on broadway topless. Is this worse than Miley Cyrus posing nearly naked as a 16 yr old for Vanity Fair? Absolutely not. If the Glee cast were teenagers, yes, this would be incredibly wrong, but they aren’t. They are adults. Just like who the show is written for.
I’m not surpsised by the fuss it’s creating, but I don’t agree with the PTC view on this. And I’m sure my wife thinks differently, ScaryMommy :)

I just wish that actors, and people in general, would tone down the hypersexuality. It simply shows a lack of class and self-respect. I think parents should think back to when they were 15. How many of us saw something sexy on TV and had THAT friend that was going to copy it the second they took their “cover” Halloween costume off?
I’m ancient so my friends became sexy nurses, cops, anything Rock Horror, and Elvira when I was in high school(Oh and ANYTHING sexy copied from an MTV video). But they did it the second they were out of their parents sight. It was considered an awesome idea. By the time I was in college there was a mass grounding for high schoolers recreating the Warrant Cherry Pie video( I’m old you’ll have to google or youtube it).
My parents frightened the bejeezus out of me so there was no hope of me sneaking to act out. I saw it happen quite a lot though. We had my Godson baptized in 1989 over one such “harmless outfit” scenario that ended with a wild party and a pregnancy.
Now it’s not just Halloween, magazines, videos and now it’s not just 15-year-olds. The first time someone sees that their daughter has sent a few “naughty and harmless” pics like the ones above- (Then the receiver will pass them along and so on and so forth.) then chaos will ensue. The computer and cell phone has changed the game. Impulse decisions can cause unfortunate decisions that can now be relived forever.
Then some mothers will either say “oh well” (while the other mother say unfortunate things about said mothers parenting skills) or there will be “talks” of every kind about appropriate dress at home and away from home.
Though I had heard about this shoot, I hadn’t seen the photos until now. They are quite disturbing. I’m a 35 year old woman and they make me uncomfortable. I might go take a shower now to wash away the eww. I certainly would not show them to my children.
Regarding Twilight, technically Edward Cullen was born in 1901 and was turned into a vampire in 1918…..sooooo it’s OK to swoon over him…..if you’re into old dudes. Personally that’s not my thing, but who am I to judge? On that note perhaps this geriatric shouldn’t be dating a 17 year old girl. Scratch that. She’s 18 now, but I digress.
I have seen some similar posts re: Outrage over Glee GQ shoot.
Umm…The show is not for kids. It does come on at 8…but so does How I Met Your Mother, and I wouldn’t let a kid watch those either. (Though when I say “kid” I guess that’s subjective all it’s own…I’d consider Glee would be allowable in my house for kids 16 & up. ) It will also be changing to a 9 pm time slot. I dunno if it’s a viewership thing, or b/c they can get away with more at a later hour or what.
The actors themselves aren’t kids…the magazine GQ is not for kids.
Just b/c the setting of the show is highschoolers doesn’t mean it’s *made* for highschool students. I even think Degrassi is pushing it sometimes…though I feel like it’s more acceptable, b/c at the end of the episode there’s a lesson to be learned.

The shots don’t bother me. I mean, they are adults in real life. I’m an avid Glee watcher, and the show is truly for adults. There are more than enough sexual overtones on the show, so this spread is realy not surprising.
But then again, I also have little kids who are in bed when I’m watching the show. Mine aren’t teenagers yet. So what the heck do I know?
If I looked like that, I would pose for all to see.
i completley disagree
these are adults over the age of 18
they have the right to do what ever they want
i have 4 kids
a 6 year old girl, 9 year old boy, 13 year old girl and a 16year old boy
and i allow all my kids to watch this show. (although my sons chose not to)
I think that although the show is innapropriate at times our kids are exposed to so much through internet that theses shows teach them in a more appropriate way about sex and booze.
though i dont condone that behavior for my 6 year old and 9 year old
however my 13 year old goes to partys and i have had times when i had to pick her up because of drinking. my 18 year is also a party boy and i have done the same with him. my daughter (13) also tells me about grade 7s at her school who drink.
the bottom line is from the age of 12 or 13 our children are going to be exposed to drinks and drugs and theses shows teach them the improtance of saying no!
however eventually they are going to be exposed to pictures like this and although the outfits and poses are not appropriate all our children will be with be or girls and be close and pose like in these photos and wear provocative clothing. maybe just not on camera i think that this is their life desicion and none of our buissness.
this is so innapropriate!!
In my opinion, I think this is an overreaction. These are adult actors and actresses, and this is an adult magazine. They are free to model where ever they please. If you’re worried about your kids seeing it, don’t buy the magazine. They shouldn’t see it if you don’t buy it. Therefore, there should be no problem. If they get a hold of the magazine, that’s your fault for not preventing it.
