Home Haircuts

Getting Ben’s hair cut is a nightmare. A snot filled scream fest that can only be summed up in one word: Hell. The last time I took him to a salon, the stylist ended up simply buzzing his hair off, convinced that he was bound to lose an ear if she continued with the scissors. Immediately upon leaving the Great Clips and the scowls of the customers in the waiting area, I stopped at Target to pick up a buzzer for the next trim. How hard could it be to buzz three year old’s hair? And I could save twenty bucks a cut? It was a no brainer. At least if he was going to carry on like that, he could do it in the comfort of our own home, without the glares and eye rolls of strangers.

I whipped out the kit once we got home, marking the blades so I’d know which to use when it came time for our first cut. Not a big fan of the whole army look, I was careful to mark the razors with the closest cut with a big red “X,” meaning I was not to use those attachments. Weeks went by and the kit sat in the bathroom closet. Last week, I took it out, ready to preform my first at home cut. I ignored the nagging memory of bald Barbie dolls and grabbed the razor that would give the most conservative buzz. Ben was sobbing on the counter, draped in a dishtowel with tears streaming down his face. I took a deep breath and began buzzing. And off came Ben’s hair. A lot of Ben’s hair. So much hair that I could see his scalp. Clearly. As I hit the off switch, I realized my mistake. Rather than grabbing the green check (duh) I grabbed the red X. The red X that reminded me not to use that attachment. Duh. At that point, I had no choice but to even things out and finish the job. So I did.

The good news is that Ben carries off the army look pretty well. And his hair will grow, thank goodness. The bad news? I can’t blame a stylist or my husband. This one was all me.

The X’d attachments are now housed in a shoe box in the back of the closet. I’m not making this mistake again. In fact, Great Clips is looking pretty damn good right now.

That’s really funny, but he looks cute either way… :)

Too funny. The only way we make it through Reilly’s haircuts are with multiple dum-dums.

Sweet Ben has such a beautiful face that you barely notice the short cut!

Looks great to me! I can barely trim my husband’s neck let alone cut a head full of hair.

While this is incredibly funny (only because I didn’t do it), nobody’s gonna notice the hair with that sweet-cheeked smile taking up a room.

I did actually do this to my husband once, but he’s not nearly as cute as Ben and he looked more like a bowling ball trying to grow a beard.

Dang, Scary Mommy, I hope you’re saving up for those therapy sessions … ;o)

Naw, I sincerely agree with everybody else. He looks so cute! Buzz cuts are cute on little boys, especially in the summer I think.

Now if you really want to get dirty looks and rolled eyes, give him a mohawk. (would a ‘cool’ haircut make it less traumatic?) My friends let their son get one each summer, although the first year all the other parents in town hated them, because it prompted whining about mohawks all. summer. long.

OH NO! He still looks adorable! Maybe you should just throw those attachments out. I think it is really amazing that you even tried cutting. You are a super hero on so many levels. Kaish is going to get a hair cut soon. He lets his hair grow in the winter so he has an automatic hat. It’s wierd, I know : )

OMG!!! You are hilarious!! Well, at least he is still a cutie and no ears are missing!! My girl was insane at her first haircut, we took her to the place that looks like a circus since I thought it would be fun. The next time I took her to my hairstylist… and now she asks, “Mommy, will you call Jamie so I can get my hair cut?”

Haha.

HAHAHA! and I think it is TOO funny that you used the one with the RED X after you took the time to mark them so you WOULDN’T do that. lol damn.

The cut really isn’t bad. IN fact it’s kind of cute! I am not much of a fan of the buzz cut either, but I think you exaggerated. I was expecting scalped. Good job!!!

15 Garret Belisle April 7, 2009 at 4:03 pm

I love his little army “do”. My son at that age turned to me on his first haircut just as the clippers went up…God he was mad, the barber and I stood there for about 45 seconds of silence and then burst out laughing. Luckily so did my little guy…his first girlfriend loved the photo’s ;)

I took my little boy to hairdresser recently for his 1st haircut. It was quite a disappointment ! Not sure I can convince my husband to ever let me take him again. I even had to let him let off steam after said haircut in my blog….

It came out great! I have to confess, I did the same thing. I figured “How hard could it be?” I’ll save $12 a cut and do it myself. The first time went OK. The second time was OK. The third time it went badly as the cheap clippers started to get stuck and not work right and he said it hurt. The fourth time was a disaster. It might be the cheap clippers and the fact that I don’t totally know what I am doing. Anyway, for now, we are back at the Kids Kut place!; )

I think the cut looks great. My first clipper cut wasn’t nearly that nice. I have one kid who can sport the clipper cut but the other kid looks a little WW2 German when the clippers hack off his locks. Still trying to learn the perfect scissor cut for him.

Found your blog through 31dbbb. Very nice.

There is a shaver that will cut at a 19 try that you might like that haircut I did on my son hair.

25 Kelly Smith July 21, 2009 at 11:41 pm

I regularly buzz my three boys hair, and now it’s easy because they are so used to it. But I remember those days where I had to hand out lollipops, even before the cutting began, and within 10 seconds it was covered in snot, tears and stuck with pieces of hair.
