Home Haircuts

Getting Ben’s hair cut is a nightmare. A snot filled scream fest that can only be summed up in one word: Hell. The last time I took him to a salon, the stylist ended up simply buzzing his hair off, convinced that he was bound to lose an ear if she continued with the scissors. Immediately upon leaving the Great Clips and the scowls of the customers in the waiting area, I stopped at Target to pick up a buzzer for the next trim. How hard could it be to buzz three year old’s hair? And I could save twenty bucks a cut? It was a no brainer. At least if he was going to carry on like that, he could do it in the comfort of our own home, without the glares and eye rolls of strangers.

I whipped out the kit once we got home, marking the blades so I’d know which to use when it came time for our first cut. Not a big fan of the whole army look, I was careful to mark the razors with the closest cut with a big red “X,” meaning I was not to use those attachments. Weeks went by and the kit sat in the bathroom closet. Last week, I took it out, ready to preform my first at home cut. I ignored the nagging memory of bald Barbie dolls and grabbed the razor that would give the most conservative buzz. Ben was sobing on the counter, draped in a dishtowel with tears streaming down his face. I took a deep breath and began buzzing. And off came Ben’s hair. A lot of Ben’s hair. So much hair that I could see his scalp. Clearly. As I hit the off switch, I realized my mistake. Rather than grabbing the green check (duh) I grabbed the red X. The red X that reminded me not to use that attachment. Duh. At that point, I had no choice but to even things out and finish the job. So I did.

The good news is that Ben carries off the army look pretty well. And his hair will grow, thank goodness. The bad news? I can’t blame a stylist or my husband. This one was all me.

The X’d attachments are now housed in a shoe box in the back of the closet. I’m not making this mistake again. In fact, Great Clips is looking pretty damn good right now.

Haircut looks pretty good in the photo. And Ben looks pretty happy – was he just glad the hair cut was over or was there some bribery involved?

And all I can say is thank God he’s not a girl. VERY few girls could make that work.

My oldest just turned four and he STILL flails and screams as if his ears are being cut off. I literally have to restrain him in my lap as horrified parents try to sheild their children from the display. Especially since he’s giant and looks more like a six year old. It’s humiliating. We inevitably leave Cartoon Cuts covered in snot, sweat and a lot of hair. I’m the only one who can handle this – Chris always escapes the mortification involved.

George on the other hand is easy – so I happily let my Chris be in charge of HIS last haircut. And he came back to me almost completely bald. George apparently has thin hair – this is not a good look for him. And now that it’s growing out a little? He looks like a Monchichi (remember those? “oh so soft and cuddley…”) Looks like I’m destined to be in charge of EVERYONE’S haircuts from now on (I’m won’t even consider letting Chris take the girl – she just finally grew some hair!). I think Bill Cosby did a routine on this…something about not doing something right so no one ever asks you to do it again….? And they say women are manipulative.

He looks cute.

We had to buzzcut my son’s hair when he was younger. He’d also flip out over haircuts. He sometimes would add, “HELP me. HELLLLPPPP” while the poor stylist tried to finish.

Of course, after we buzzcut my son’s hair he’d insist that his “hairs” were in pain and would promptly stick a band-aid on top of his head.

Thank goodness he outgrew his haircut phobia.

Good news – this haircut will last twice as long!

My sister is a stylist, so she will be doing all of my kids’ haircuts. Her 2 yr old just sits there patiently while she cuts his hair. She just lets him hold the clippers and feel them “tickle” his hands (from the buzzing of the clippers, not touching the blades!).

The short style that you gave him might just grow on you. Its probably the easiest thing in the world to maintain. Good thing he is a little boy. My friend had to do this to her girl because she decided to cut her own hair and lobbed off chunks from the top. Oy!

I’m so sorry! I know how hard it is when you cut that hair off and they look SO MUCH OLDER! My son HATES getting his hair cut so in November we buzzed it all off. REALLY short. Shorter than you did. Because we figured that the shorter it was, the longer before we’d have to cut it again. He looked so different. But now it’s grown back and I am reminded how much I love his blonde hair!

I ended up doing the same thing as well as the boy was absolutely uncontrollable when it came to haircuts. It took a while to get the length right but now he’s an absolute angel when it comes to a trim. It’s definitely worth persevering – think what you can do with all those spare $20s.

While this is incredibly funny (only because I didn’t do it), nobody’s gonna notice the hair with that sweet-cheeked smile taking up a room.

I did actually do this to my husband once, but he’s not nearly as cute as Ben and he looked more like a bowling ball trying to grow a beard.

Dang, Scary Mommy, I hope you’re saving up for those therapy sessions … ;o)

Naw, I sincerely agree with everybody else. He looks so cute! Buzz cuts are cute on little boys, especially in the summer I think.

Now if you really want to get dirty looks and rolled eyes, give him a mohawk. (would a ‘cool’ haircut make it less traumatic?) My friends let their son get one each summer, although the first year all the other parents in town hated them, because it prompted whining about mohawks all. summer. long.

It came out great! I have to confess, I did the same thing. I figured “How hard could it be?” I’ll save $12 a cut and do it myself. The first time went OK. The second time was OK. The third time it went badly as the cheap clippers started to get stuck and not work right and he said it hurt. The fourth time was a disaster. It might be the cheap clippers and the fact that I don’t totally know what I am doing. Anyway, for now, we are back at the Kids Kut place!; )

I regularly buzz my three boys hair, and now it’s easy because they are so used to it. But I remember those days where I had to hand out lollipops, even before the cutting began, and within 10 seconds it was covered in snot, tears and stuck with pieces of hair.
