I am not particularly fond of pain. Sure, I can handle it, I’m not my husband, after all. But, if given the choice, I’d just rather not. I enthusiastically received epidurals with all three kids, not for a moment having any desire to brave the pain of labor. It was a no-brainer for me.
Lily had a cavity filled yesterday. I felt horribly for her, but selfishly, was a tad excited for the blog potential. I brought my video camera and was armed and ready to document my daughter’s first introduction to drugs. Like any good mother would. Remember David after the dentist? Lily would put him to shame. She acts like she’s on drugs half the time anyway, so this was going to be good.
But she refused them. The Novocaine needle scared her and the laughing gas mask was not going to happen. {And, no, the dentist didn’t seem to appreciate me asking for her share instead} So, my kid did got her first filling sans drugs. She gripped the chair and flinched a bit, but that was it. What a disappointment.
And she insisted on going back to school after her appointment instead of shopping like I suggested.
I’m beginning to wonder if she’s really mine.

Wow I can’t even get my teeth cleaned with out the gas! She is so brave!

I am in awe of your little girl! I could not have done that. Even as an adult, I would take the gas if they’d give it to me!

My teeth actually hurt, right now, thinking about her doing it without drugs. What a brave girl!
The shopping thing though, that jus makes me wonder if she wasn’t already on something! (kidding of course!)

The poor kid has watched Little Shop of Horrors too many times and the idea of the mask terrified her. Poor kid!! And, it wasn’t a bad cavity. But, still.

Wow, your daughter is very brave! I don’t blame her, needles scare me too…however, the thought of a dentist drilling on my teeth w/o pain meds makes me curl up in the fetal position. OMG, what a trooper you have.
I was supposed to go to the dentist yesterday (haven’t been since early 2007) but I chickened out! Perhaps I’ll gain the courage to pick up the phone and reschedule my cleaning!

Wow – good for her!
I just got a cavity filled myself, the first one in 20+ years and imagine my surprise to find that they still used a novacaine needle. My girls’ dentist uses some sort of gel stuff that numbs their gums and teeth if they have a cavity! So I asked for the same stuff and my dentist just looked at me with pity and reminded me that he was not a pediatric dentist. Apparently, grown up dentists use needles. Wow – like that’s supposed to be something to be proud of?

Color me impressed! My oldest daughter had to have VERY minor oral surgery last year, and freaked out so much about the shot and the gas mask, that I had to reschedule the appointment. The oral surgeon wrote a rx for Valium and suggested she take it an hour before the procedure.
I thought you’ve GOT to be kidding me. It’s a shot and three stitches! She’s got to learn to cope here. We talked over the procedure, exactly what would happen, how it might feel at great length. And she was FINE! Calm and brave and totally FINE.
In spite of the lack of fodder, aren’t you thrilled with Lily’s bravery???

Wow. That is very impressive. I have a feeling they are going to have to hit Bram over the head with a shovel to knock him out. And I will be using the laughing gas…..
Lily doesn’t know what she is missing out on! (is that wrong to say that? she is a little girl and all.)

What a champ!! I don’t even have my teeth cleaned without asking if they can just knock me out cold.
And no shopping?! Maybe she didn’t hear you right haha. :)

When I got my last filling, the dentist asked me if I wanted novocaine and I was like, listen, you can just put in my file that the answer to that will ALWAYS be yes. What a trooper. And to go back to school, too. I think she might be a changeling. Sorry, but your real child is being raised by fairies.

Wow! What a kid! I, on the other hand, can’t even get my teeth CLEANED without that numbing gel smeared all over my gums. A couple months ago, my 7 year old son had THREE small cavities drilled and filled with no novacaine. He was so terrified of the needles that he insisted they work without it. My her0.
[Reply]
Wow! How old is your daughter? Mine is just about to turn 4 and then her dentist wants to give her the laughing gas and novacaine – not sure I want either … She doesn’t have cavities – they just want to put sealants on.
