The Birthday Project

As most of you know, Scary Mommy Nation was created to alleviate a little bit of stress suffered by Scary Mommies. It's a work in progress, with the board members and community members constantly trying to figure out the best way to make a difference within our community.

I'm excited to announce a new part of SMN, The Birthday Project. The Birthday Project will ensure that every child of a Scary Mommy Community member will receive a birthday gift on his or her birthday... because moms have enough to stress about, without adding birthdays to the list!

The details:

• To be eligible for The Birthday Project, you must be a member of the Scary Mommy Community, with at least 100 posts on the message boards.

• You must be financially struggling and otherwise unable to provide a gift for your child.

• One application needs to be submitted per child.

• Applications should be submitted no less than two weeks before your child’s birthday. (Please allow at least four weeks for international shipping.)

• Toys are broken down into age groups and will be packaged and shipped from aMuse Toys in Baltimore. Please pick the age-appropriate category and "shop" for a toy:

• Once you have your toy picked out, you can apply for it here. Have fun!

Helping Victims of the Boston Marathon Attack

I wrote a post this morning about how disappointed I was in myself for being able to move past the bombings in Boston so quickly. That I feel myself becoming immune to tragedy, or at least more immune than I used to be, and that the feeling scares the shit out of me. It wasn’t a post I was proud to write.

Even if these type of tragedies become more and more commonplace in our society, I don’t want to become complacent. I want to make a concerted effort to put myself in the shoes of parents who lost children and children who lost parents. I want to hold on to the feeling of gratitude that my family and friends in my hometown were not among the killed or hurt. I want to honor the victims. I want to make a difference. I imagine many of you do, too.

The victims and their families will never recover from Monday’s events. There are three people dead and 176 others injured, 17 of them critically. There will be funerals and rehabilitation and therapy and prosthetic limbs and so much more that I can’t even imagine. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino have announced the formation of The One Fund Boston, Inc. to help the people most affected by tragedy. The organization will decide where the money will be most beneficial and distribute accordingly.

You can donate to One Fund directly, or make a donation through my 501(c)3 charity,Scary Mommy Nation. Scary Mommy Nation will match your donation, dollar for dollar, (up to $1000) and pass the money on to The One Fund Boston, Inc. on Mother’s Day, May 12.

We need your help to make it truly AWESOME and UNIQUE.

Post or email your submission to cris@scarymommy.com or charisse@scarymommy.com with a picture of YOU holding up a confession of your choice. Make it a confession you've written yourself. Maybe choose one that you relate to. You can even choose a favorite confession of all time!

Okay I think it is time for another SM dinner party as school is starting and us moms and dads need to band together to survive another year. This meal idea was provided by @LesboMom and I think it is the perfect time of year for an easy meal that (most) kids love, who am I kidding adults love tacos too! (Even the pink kind :p )

I figure we can share recipes and pictures here. I want us to band together and make this the best SM dinner ever!!

Introducing Scary Mommy of the Month!

We want to show a fellow SM who is struggling through hard times just how wonderful she is. On July 1, one of our members will be crowned Scary Mommy of the Month and get a big boost financially and emotionally.

Know someone who fits the bill? Read on.

To be considered, the member must have at least 1,000 posts on the boards and be in a serious financial bind. Applications will stay open for a week, until June 13. The Scary Mommy Nation Board and Moderators will then review all applications and decide on a recipient. She will then be verified and, finally, crowned Scary Mommy of the Month.

The prize will be catered to her specific needs, but will have a value of between two and five thousand dollars.

The Scary Mommy Community was founded upon the belief that all mothers deserve a safe haven, and a supportive community where they can be honest without fear of judgement. They can take comfort knowing they have the love and support of a tight knit community behind them, that they are not alone, and that others can not only empathize but relate to the trials and difficulties that they face everyday.

Scary Mommy of the Month was introduced to help alleviate the need and hardships of a very special Scary Mommy community member. It was a daunting task, to say the least! Each and every nominee was a worthy, valued, and loved member of this community. Amongst the outpouring of nominations from the community, one member stood out from the rest- a member whom we truly felt would benefit the most from the help we had to offer. From the sheer volume and wide variety of the nominations, to the dire need being experienced, we were able to collectively agree on our Scary Mommy of the Month recipient.

@ShadyLane has been a part of this community since the MB's inception. So, I hate, hate, hate asking for votes and try not to do it, but... There is this Living Social grant program and I just submitted Scary Mommy for it. The prize is $250,000 and I can't even imagine what we could do with that money. Can you??? OMG.
