My son is 3 yrs old. I have started giving him a regular cup at meal times the beginning of this year. And during the day a water bottle when playing. Rarely does he get a sippy cup during the day. I was wondering at what age did you take the sippy cup away at naps and night time? Or will they grow out of it?
-
I don't think I ever did give mine cups at nap and bedtime. But I assume they'll grow out of it. By 3.5-4 I think cups of all kinds should be resetved for snack and meal times.
-
I would day it all depends on how many spills you want to pick up. My ds stopped using one some time in the last 6 months. He is 4.5
-
LOL My daughter still has sippy cups, she's 2, she also does good with cups that have straws. She is in no way ready for an open cup.. lol. She did good with the bottle going away I'm sure she'll give up the sippys when she's ready.
-
Both my kids(6 and 4) have 'sippy cups', but Ive taken out the platic thingie inside so they are just cups with lids. Basically like a travel mug. I have white/beige carpet and they always want their drinks in the living room. At dinner or any other time they have normal cups. But it never ever fails if I give them regular cups in the living room they spill it....every.single.time.There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other. my son is 2.5 - he'll be three in july. the sippy cups we have are dying a slow death. i won't buy anymore of them and when theyre all gone, theyre all gone. i did that with the binkies with my daughter (who is now 10)...on the same lines, my son only gets a binky in bed and he doesnt even ask for it anymore whne he goes to bed so if he asks he can have it but im so glad he doesnt NEEEED it...so when those few suckers die too, theyre gone for good :) i think im going to take @dreamer that idea with taking the plastic things out of them soon.
-
Or you can get the cups that have straws in them @crazymama2two I just dont use them cause I dont have a dishwasher...and I forget sometimes to rinse them right away..lol Getting stuff out of the straws can be a pain in the tush. There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other. Which one are you?

@Dreamer I found a great way to clean straws. Twist two (or three, depending how thick your straw is) pipe cleaners together, put soap on it and then get it wet. Run it through the straw a few times, and it's perfectly clean. I do this with DS' straw sippies and haven't had a problem.
-
hmm.. that is something to consider @monkeybutt (I love the name btw, made me giggle) I tried the straws once, and the pipe cleaner but they were to small. Maybe I didnt use enough soap? Or have to look harder for better ones.. :)There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other. Oh I use the cups with the straws also. And no plastic things in his cups. I feel better about giving him a sippy when he goes to bed now. :)
-
@dreamer - perfect idea!! thanks!!
-
@Dreamer Thanks. The straws were too small, or the pipe cleaners?
-
@monkeybutt, depends on your point of view. lol. Either way, I couldnt get the pipe cleaner into the straws. So I dunno, is it the straws fault, or the pipe cleaner?
Also didnt like the straws tho, cause I either A) lost them or B) the kids chewed the ends of them and made them useless.

My ds4 and dd2 have them. If they take one to bed it has water in it.
For me its a spill thing. -
@Dreamer lol For reference, we use these:

I'm able to fit two pipe cleaners that are twisted together in the straw.

My son had sippies in the car , for meals, and anywhere away from kitchen till he was 5. For me it was a spill thing too. He didn't get it for bed though because if he had very much liquid after dinner he would pee the bed.
-
My 3 yr old still has a cup at night. Their not sippy cups, but they have a pop up spout thing or its a reg cup w a lid and straw...he has a cup all day but he's not overly attached to it. He gets a drink when he's thirsty and forgets about it. :)
-
DS is almost two and uses sippy cups during the day but I have been slowly giving him plastic cups with no lids and very little liquid in them. He likes the idea and I watch him like a hawk. If he needs more to drink than maybe 2-3 sips, the lid goes on.
I wish I could help with the nighttime thing but DS gave all that up on his own around 13-14 months. He never even took a bottle for naps. -
I use q-tips to clean my sippy straws. Works like a charm then just throw them away ;)I can't be perfect all the time...so give it up already!
-
Grow out of sippy cups? Are you kidding? Nope. I gave DH a sippy cup the other day when he was sick and wanted some ice water, but didn't want to go through the trouble of reaching over to put a cup ALL THE WAY on the table next to the couch. Man colds FTW.
Seriously, though, DD is using the ones with straws now, and she never had a cup in bed, though she will occasionally wake up and ask for water and I bring it in a sippy cup.

=)) =)) =))Finally figured out what's wrong with my brain:
On the left side there's nothing right & on the right side there's nothing left. -
I love the idea of removing the plastic inserts as a transition step. They are a B#$%H to clean!"I wish I could squirrel, but alas, I cannot"
-
I am probably gonna sound mean, but we stopped letting DD have drinks/food anywhere in the house except the kitchen. So, we got rid of sippy cups around 3. We were letting her have snacks around the house, then we had a rat, and that was it. Food/drink, kitchen only.Suck it up buttercup!
