I really feel disappointed that this big exciting book is out and I "should" buy it. I come to this site to talk with other mothers, and I am glad Jill made this site, but I really feel annoyed when I keep getting emails telling me to buy the damn book. I'm not here to make someone money, I"m here to talk to others. I'm glad that Jill has a good business, but I'm tired of being pushed into getting the book. I've almost thought of leaving the site, but I'm sure that in a few months the furor will die down.

I never get emails to buy the book. I've been here a few months now. The only email I get is the ones about new blog posts from Jill.

Um, really? I get absolutely no emails. Change your settings.

Beyond that, This is JILL'S site, and it is a business that she pays for. That's right, Jill lays out money so that we can all talk to each other, form bonds, and be who we are in all our scariness.  No one is forcing you to buy anything, no one is stealing your credit card number, but I don't understand that someone who has utilized the services and community create by another person can begrudge them the ability to advertise through their own website.

I am so, so thankful to @scarymommy to creating this website, and I fully support all her endeavors. A few emails wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

@OtakuHime You must mean that you subscribe to my posts by email. You can easily unsubscribe and still use the boards.

    Thank you @Chocoholic

It's really, really hard writing and promoting a book. It's selling OK, but considering how many people follow the site, use the boards, are fans on FB etc., the sales are pretty dismal. It's a really fine line between promoting and harassing and I am trying to do my best not to drive you all crazy and I apologize if I've crossed it. That said, it's really frustrating to have poured my self into this book and know how much better sales could be. Trust me, it's not so fun on this end, either.

I get things on facebook, posts and blogs and such, and some are asking people to buy the book. Why in the world wouldn't she? She pays for us to be able to be on this site, and unless money is coming out of your own pocket to participate in sm, I don't think you have a damn thing to gripe about.

@scarymommy I just want to send some love and support that most of us understand how hard marketing and self promoting can be and are cheering you along every step of the way for many sales to come! >:D<

And yet another reason this site has become difficult. State any opinion other then the common one and a person gets treated like a second class citizen. I have no idea why I keep getting emails about sales, maybe there is a bug in some system, I was not aware that Jill paid to have this site started, and I can imagine that it is difficult to promote a book, but Jill said it herself, it's a difficult line between harassment and promoting and at times I feel that the amount this book has been pushed, between here, my emails, and Facebook, that it feels a little like harassment.  I dont know how many times I need to stress I enjoy this site for the most part, except for the extremely judging people in some cases. On that note a lot of people seem to think its ok to attack people for their OPINIONS, and I thought this was a place people could go and talk about their P.O.V, without worry.

As long as your POV doesn't violate the CoC, you're good to go.

I think a better line of resolution would have been to message someone directly, rather than an open thread such as this.

If I could buy 10 I would @ScaryMommy and I will once I get my new job.  I loved the book, and I know a lot of others did too.  I know you are doing your best to not be a bother but you are trying to move them off the shelves.  I get it.  :D  S'all good.

I am sorry for feel this way @OtakuHime

I don't mean to sound harsh, but don't you find it at all odd that you appear to be the only one with this opinion? Unsubscribe from the emails, its a simple solution. Also, I am curious, why not delete them? Why not set them to spam? Why come down on Jill for promoting her livelihood.

@Meghann I am pretty sure out of all the people on this site I am not the only one with this problem, I may just be the only person to say anything. I am not putting Jill down for her livelihood, I believe I actually said that I'm glad she has a business she can run. Probably about 2 out of 3 emails are about the book, the 1 out of 3 is an interesting post, which is why I haven't disabled my email's yet.  I enjoy this site for the most part. I think I'm pretty much done with this conversation tho, because it's just running in circles.

Hmmm I'm subrcribed to Jills email and I think maybe 1 or 2 were about purchasing her book which makes sense seeing as how she's trying to sell her book! If that were me and I wrote a book and you subscribed to MY email I would be sending you something everysingleday, lol I think a lot of us are just confused because we haven't seen a ton of emails coming from Jill about buying her book...

No, I don't think so, @otakuhime. I find it very strange that all of us subscribed aren't seeing these dozens of emails.
Sorry. I call bs. There is some serious exaggeration going in here.
Glad you like the site, but its still rude to bash the CREATOR who is funding this out of her pocket. Some emails are really too much to ask? I think not.

Yeah, I've been here a year, and haven't gotten more than 2 emails about the book, I don't think. And one of those was It's Available Now to Preorder, and then another when it actually hit the shelves. (I THINK, I wouldn't swear).

If it's posted multiple times from FB, I never notice. The only emails I get from FB are notifications when someone posts to me directly.

I don't get emails about te book either. And I'm wondering how us saying that and suggesting that you look at your settings is treatin you like a second class citizen?

Long time user and never get emails so don't know what to tell you other than maybe bitching right out the gate isn't the way to go.

This thread just reminded me that I can buy the book on Kindle.  Done and done. I'll write a review on Amazon when I'm finished as well.

Even though I haven't been a member of Scary Mommy for terribly long, I've made some virtual friendships that will hopefully translate to real life at some point.  This place is a great sanctuary for when I feel utterly frustrated and rather than bitch about it to people who don't understand what the eff I'm talking about, I can relate to most of you ladies.

@scarymommy, keep up the fabulous work. I'm not the only one that admires what you do, and we're not delusional cheerleaders or Koolaid drinkers or something. Your livelihood is dependent on this site and your merch, and I'm all for supporting your endeavors. >:D<

I never get the emails either. *shoulder shrug* I do however, take EVERY opportunity to "pimp" the book and the site to everyone. I even put flyers in women's shopping carts at walmart when they aren't looking. STILL. That being said..it's probably the email gods telling you to BUY THE BOOK.

I wrote this in the PM a while back, but never got a response-- not sure if you saw it??

The book release is a celebration that a LOT of members feel intimately a part of, as such we all collectively want to share it with others. I'm sorry that you feel like Jill is being pushy with this, but only because you're missing out on enjoying the fun and excitement that we are all experiencing through this time.

That said, the forums are great and the members are even better. Its absolutely a one of a kind place and I'm glad you like it here.

You should really try out Jills book though ;)

I believe I responded with I make my own fun and excitement so I'm not feeling left out. This did get HUGELY blown out of proportion though. Also, I read the stuff on here..not sure why I would need the book, and the fact I can barely afford to feed my kids, means no book for me.
