    Morning all,

Going to make this a quick coffee tawk today, seeing as how my brain is no longer functioning.

Topic of the day: Birth Control

Question: What type of birth control do you use/ what are its pros and cons?

I need lots & lots of coffee this morning. Not enough sleep + raining day!

I use a copper IUD (Paraguard).

    Pros:
Inserted once & done. Lasts for 10 years. No worries & allows for spontaneous fun ;-)

    Cons:
    Still have your regular period

I use Depo. It's my only option other than abstinance due to high blood pressure and extensive scarring from 3 c-sections.

Pros: Only 1 shot every 3 months. No period at all.

Cons: It's a shot. Some people have had problems with it, like weight gain and mood swings, but I haven't. I've heard bad things about what happens when you stop taking Depo, so I'm pretty sure I'll keep getting my shots 'til I die.

If I'm not supposed to do it, how come I can?

    I use alesse

    Pros:
-most of the pills make me very very sick, this one I have never gotten sick from.
-It improves the look of my skin
-pills are old news and they come with little, but some risks. Some newer contraceptive scares me after reading about it.

    Cons
-you have to take it EVERY DAY ugh

Soo tired today!  Thank you DS for getting up so early..  I-)

I'm on the pill (tri-sprintec).  I like to feel in control of my birth control.  I've been on it for 2 years and have yet to miss a pill.  My period is much lighter than it used to be, but it would be nice to not have one at all.  My cramps/back aches aren't as bad either.

It does cost $9/month after insurance.  If I were to forget a pill, I'd be fucked because we don't use anything else.

depo, love it. no period, no side effects. except i will be ttc someday soon and there is no way of telling how long it will take to wear off, i've heard up to 2 years! if that's the case i need to stop getting it now, but it would not be good to get knocked up right now. i just don't want to be still trying when i'm 35

ATM we use condoms, Im still breast feeding and we made the decision that becuase of all the Epilepsy drugs Im taking I really dont want to add another drug into my trophy's food...oh and lately we are also using abstinence =(

I really feel like I want to get "fixed" because we really cant afford another kid and DH feels the family is complete...but for some reason I just cant make that phone call...Hes probably going to get snipped soon though after we get settled in the new house...Ill make that phone call for him
Im pretty extraordinary in an ordinary way

Femcon/Zeosa (the generic version) BC pill

I don't have any problems with it, don't mind taking it daily...still get my period, but it's been shorter since I started taking it. I think it's been helping my HS a little bit, but it's hard to tell because any kind of stress affects my HS.
I'm as sexy as a burp mid-kiss. Watch out!

    Depo here. I love it!
    Pros: no stupid period. Ever!

Cons: my arm hurts like a bitch for a few days after the shot.

I've never had any side effect problem with this. No weight gain, and it doesn't make me psycho. And @shadylane, it depends on how long you've been taking it. But yes, it can take up to 2 years.

    I can't use bc anymore.

I took avian for 6 years and now have gall bladder disease from it, so I can't use hormone therapies of any kind.

It also caused some other minor side effects.

Right now I'm using the mirena iud.

Pro's: Inserted once, haven't really thought about it since.

Cons: I have irregular spotting, but no full blown period. But I get period cramps every few months that are pretty bad.

I've also taken the depo shot in the past and at the time I loved it, but now I can't afford a shot every 3 months and my insurance barely covers the cost of any thing. If I could afford it I would go back on the shot.

@megsue i've been on it about 2 years so i figure at least a year. i should probably stop getting it but i'm scared, with my luck i'll get prego right away. why don't they give u the shot in ur butt, it barely hurts

My Dh had a vasectomy after the birth of Spawn.

    Pro's:

    • Outpatient procedure at noon on a Friday. He was back to work on Monday. Minimal discomfort. Minimal recovery time. No missed, or short, paycheck.
    • No one has to remember to do anything, or take anything. There IS no more Woooooops!
    • No more hormonal bc to mess up my weight or mood.
    • No more forgetting, and then doing the Please-God-No dance as you pee on a stick.

    Con's
    • He's "fixed"...but I'm not. Optimistically, this won't matter. Statistically, it could be important...
    • If, God forbid, we decided to increase our brood in the future, that could prove difficult.
    • Too many men don't go back for their "all clear" tests! (Mine did, but a lot don't)

    I was on depo.
Pros: one shot every three months, no period
Cons: some weight gain, shot, and it was not pleasant coming off of it .
I would use it again tho because I liked not having to remember to take a pill everyday.

I was using depo but dan scared me out of it... I don't get a lot of calcium as it is and apparently according to his lame Internet research it greatly increases the chances/speed of osteoporosis and bone degeneration. does anyone using it know anything about this? I feel like I've asked my dr (I use a walk in clinic, not the best source) and they never give me a straight answer :s

I've used different pills, patch, ring, shot, iud. My favs by far were the iud and then the nuvaring. Not on any bc now.

@eapple - I've heard that too about the shot, friend of mine's doc wouldn't continue using it for her because of it and I don't know anyone that's still on it. I actually didn't think it was still used @ all until people were posting here about it.

Right now we use condoms. I can't take hormonal birth control at all, it makes me psychotic, gain weight, pimply, it just fucks me insde out. It's not wort it and hubby agrees. Plus I'm forgetful as hell and we all know how well that works out... to quote @Love, I would end up doing the Please-God-No dance (LMAO) while peing n astick.
After two deestatng ate e losses, DH and I have decided we are done FIN, andso he i going for vasectomy. The Snip, as he so fondly refers to it. And may I just say I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT!!!!!*dances around the room*
@Love any "Snippy" words of wisdom for us? lol ;)

the reason depo shots may cause earlier onset osteoporosis is because it completely stops hormonal production, which protects you against bone density loss, and essentially puts you in a post-menopausal state.

Osteoporosis is one of the biggest reasons for post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy and calcium supplementation, especially in at risk women:  petite, finely boned, history of bone loss, and/or Asian.

Our local health department (I was told by a nurse friend) discontinued the use of the depo shot years ago, because of the high incidences of something going wrong with patients' liver function that had been linked back to their depo use. I can't confirm or deny what that's all about, but I'll look into it later on.

If he's like mine, he'll act like a big ole baby LOL Humor him. Him was a brave little man to let that mean ole doctor near his balls LOL
Also, if he's like mine, try to stay away from him until after the "all clear"...something about being told that you CAN'T have sex made mine turn into a randy 16 year old. I thought I was going to have to stab him in the eye with a fork to keep him away LMAO

Current form - total hysterectomy 2.5 years ago :(

    Past forms -
the Pill - it works because it kills my libido and I don't fucking want to be touched - doesn't matter which brand, I tried several.

NFP- Natural Family Planning - did this for 7 years and it worked fine as I was very regular and I had very clear signs of ovulation.  Took temps for about 3 months and then just kept track of where I was in my cycle.

Condoms - used in conjnction with NFP.  The hardest part of NFP is if you follow it absolutley, the RCC says that you should abstain during the fertile time to avoid pregnancy. Well, women are most "in the mood" and have easier and better orgasms when they are ovulating, so I wasn't going  to deny myself the chance for great sex.  My ExH was very supportive of this method and when I said he had to "cover up" he did without complaint ever.  He was getting to go without condoms probably 3/4 of the time, so he did not find it a great sacrifice.

Vasectomy - exH had one after DS was 3, said he didn't want any more kids, I wasn't sure I was done, but he gave me no choice in the matter.  I had pretty bad PPD after DS, so I guess it was probably for the best.

I am fixed. After having my daughter we decided that two was enough and so I got fixed. I do not want any more children period!!
so for me that is the pro and the only con to it is that I still have a raging period once a month and I turn into demon mommy lol I bypass scary and go head first into demon territory lol

Dw was using the Nuvaring or what ever its called. Even though this pregnancy was planned, after seeing how fertile both of us are producing twins this first go around, I'm opting to get snipped. Just need to sit down and talk with Dw if we one or two more or just throw in the towel.

    Type - Mirena IUD

Pros - inserted after DS was born 2 years ago, minimal periods for the first few months (more like heavy spotting) and nothing since then; don't have to use condoms for DH, don't have to think about taking a pill every day (that is my epic life failure...)

Cons - according to DH, it felt like a snakebite on his junk for the first couple of months until the strings softened up; sometimes I get cramps without a period, and have to think about it for a while.

Bonus *** It's getting taken out today and we're going to start TTC immediately!  YAY for baby #2!

@Love yes, I'm anticipating a man cold X 5,685,000 reaction. DH is a wuss, but you're right, he is a big tough man for getting snipped and I will be sure to pamper the living shit out of him.
Oh, and in regards to the randy teenager bit, mine is like that 24/7, 365. I am going to buy myself a HAZMAT suit now for the recovery period LOL. I can't imagine it getting worse but with my luck....damn I'm exhausted already!

Right now I'm on the mini-pill. The all progesterone one? I was on Yaz for years, and loved it, but when I turned 35 my dr wouldn't prescribe it any more bc I smoke. Increased risk of blood clots, blah, blah, blah...
Was on depo in the past, in fact ds7 is a depo baby :-/
My dr has been trying to convince me to get mirena, and in theory it sounds wonderful! But I've had a couple friends that had horrible experiences with the insertion. So I'm a big fat scaredy cat! I shouldn't even be worrying about this shit at all, bc when I was pg with dd4 I'd already signed the consents for a tubal ligation. When she was born by emergency c-section at 30 weeks I asked them to do it since they were already in there, but the dr talked me out of it. She didn't want me to regret making such a final decision when dd was so early and her health issues were still unknown.

I use depo.. and have used it for .. gosh like 7 years?
    pros
VERY few periods (unless I'm a few days late getting a shot I never have one) I think I've had like 2 in 2 years?
    one shot every three months
I get mine at planned parenthood so I just walk in.

    cons
I want to hump anything that moves the first few days after getting a shot. seriously. anything. you bend over and I'm like "heyyyyyy baby how YOU doin'???"
you DO lose some calcium...i just take supplements with vitamin d. we (women) should anyway!

Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim.

Not on a damn thing here. Tried some in the past, its a love hate hypochondriac relationship for me. Condoms, pull out method, abstain while fertile works for me. That is when I actually have a SO.

@eapple, et al:  recent studies have shown that just taking the pill straight through is not harmful, you just don't take the "inert" tabs.  i do believe they also now sell them in a "3 month" pac w/o the inert ones...

Dh got snipped after ds was born. We have two, we're done. I wouldn't have another as a replacement even if something happened to one of ours, so no issue there. I always said I'd have four if we won the lottery, but I'm getting old for that.

And my options could still be open! Lol. ;)

I used NuvaRing for about 8 years and loved it.  No problems except in certain positions during sex....hubby would end up "wearing my ring"  It was pretty funny.

Now I am on the pill cause Dr says he does not like to prescribe the ring to women over 40.  So far no issues with the pill...it is BeYazz or something like that.

    I have used:
    - mirena
pros: no period, nothing to think about
    cons: weight gain, headaches
    - paragaurd
    pros: last ten years
cons: heavy periods, could sometimes feel it inside (yuck)

    I currently use ERRIN (mini-pill)
pros: have been on for 3 months only had one period
cons: have to remember to take it at same time a day every day

I am on Depo and have been for slightly less than forever. I started on it in 1997 after DS was born, went off of it in Nov of 2002, got my period in Jan. 2003, was pregnant that summer and DD was born in May of 2004. I went back on it after she was born and have been ever since. At my last annual the ARNP was talking about maybe I should go off of it since it's not considered something for "long term" I told her I would shank her if she took my Depo away.

Pros: No period at all, ever. I've not bought pads or plugs since I can't remember when. We can have sex whenever, my sheets are never ruined by period stains. No weight gain for me, no psycho hormones.
Cons: My insurance started balking at covering the injection, so now I have to go to the pharmacy, pick up the injection and then take it to my Dr to have it where as before, the Dr's office had it and I just went in and got stuck.

I have tried it all it seems. I was on the pill when i started taking it bc of rly heavy and long periods. I didn't remember to take it all the time. then when i went in the navy i got on depo and for the first shot it was great, the second i spotted a bit, and the third time i bled for 3 months. then I got on the patch and got pregnant w ds1 while on it, I tried nuva ring and it felt weird during sex, then went back to the patch. I love the patch but I am looking into either the implant or an IUD but im sure with my luck the things that can go wrong will.

pros of the patch i can change it and forget it and i can wear it continuously and not get a period.

    Dh vasectomy

Pro's: dont have to worry about kids

    Cons: For me none.

I couldn't take BC it made me crazy and the Drs just wanted to put me on anti psychotic meds.  Others made me irregular and I bled for a month causing me to go to ER with very low iron. So now I take Vitex if I am not regular and go from there.   Depo made my Liver act out like a nutzo years after taking it.  I only had one great dr who was willing to do blood tests and see how me and birth control  mixed.  Found out that I am hormone sensitive. BLAH.

    Type: Paragard

Pros: 10 years of no-effort birth contol, with no hormones

Cons: Seriously heavy flow for 2 days of my cycle

I used the Mirena for a year, but I bled more days than not before I threw in the towel and switched to the Paragard. I can't have anything with estrogen, since it shoots my blood pressure through the roof.
