I'm in an accelerated semester at the moment, but come the second week of July I am free for a couple of months. I would LOVE to join then!
-
i am all for it. I always have a book with me.It is for me to know and you to dot dot dot.
-
so, what to start with, or just discuss what we're currently reading?Bite me, cupcake!
-
my computer's not cooperating...edit my last comment to add: >:)Bite me, cupcake!

You guys could start a SM Book Club thread and bookmark it?
-
yep, but I have no idea how to bookmark itBite me, cupcake!
-
You just click on the little star on the upper right hand corner of the title of the thread (right next to general chat box).
-
well, that was easy enough...o.k. ladies we're bookmarked...any suggestions about books?Tame ones I'm currently reading are the City of Lost Souls ones by Cassandra Clare. Not so tame, 50 Shades...Bite me, cupcake!
-
I have a moral obligation to my friend who owns a private press and is an editor to not read 50 Shades, also I tried to read it and it's written in teenager format. The female role seems a little dense. No offense.
I would love to join a book club, looking for more fiction and fantasy to add to my reading currently. Most of what I read are memoirs and mommy to be books so they can be a bit heavy. -
Bella i always hesistated to read that series.. how is it so far ?It is for me to know and you to dot dot dot.
-
I am with @blkrosemomma on 50 shades, the writing is very immature and pretty bad. Someone should have given the author a thesaurus.
I would love to join a book club too! Like @CanadianMama I am doing my summer intensives right now, so you might not see me around until July. -
I've always wanted to do a book club....but I'm mega picky about the books I read. LOL So I'm on the fence.
@blkrosemomma I love fantasy fiction!
@bellabefana I've started her Infernal Devices series. Love them so far!
I refuse to read Shades of Anything. Mostly because it's popular (OMFG I'm a Literature hipster...ick) and because I keep hearing the writing style is eh.I'm as sexy as a burp mid-kiss. Watch out! -
Has anybody here read the Uglies series by Scott Westerfield? It's a good sci-fi fantasy type fiction...
-
@CallieFlower82 "I refuse to read Shades of Anything. Mostly because it's popular (OMFG I'm a Literature hipster...ick) and because I keep hearing the writing style is eh."Yeah, me too, lol.
-
I read Shades so fast the first time, I'm now for round two, and you definitely have to read all three. the first time around I had a hard time getting through the first 2-3 chapters and pretty much skipped them. It is actually a very sweet story, and the female character is not at all dense, just VERY innocent. It is, however, VERY explicit. It's also not the best writing I've ever read, but the story line does develop nicely. I may be a little bias, though, because it very much reminds me of my and my ex-df's relationship (minus the kinky).i actually prefer kids' novels...they must be more discerning than us adults because they seem to be far better written.I'm open to suggestions.Bite me, cupcake!
-
@CallieFlower82: I've read Infernal Devices as well, they're kind of a prequel to the City of Lost Souls series.Bite me, cupcake!
-
how about we get 3 book options together and then take a vote? this gives people time to look at reviews for the books plus try to find them at bookstores/libraries. I'd love to have a book club. gives me a break from bubble baths and bon bons :) (according to df)
-
@CallieFlower82: I've read Infernal Devices as well, they're kind of a prequel to the City of Lost Souls series.
It The Mortal Instruments series.Bite me, cupcake! -
Anything but the damn Vampire series...?The Vampire Diaries, is that the one they made into the movies?Bite me, cupcake!
-
Please no vampires or bow and arrow people or 50 shades. I'm pretty easy but I don't wanna read that stuff!
My two cents is we should avoid series just so we can have more variety and selection. Thoughts? -
I'm sure we could do a couple of different ones, and if it's a subject you aren't into, don't go with that one. I've usually got a couple going at once, so I'm pretty open.Personally, I'm fine with series, and I'd actually like to try some of the classics too. Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk has always been a fav of mine and would love to discuss it. I also like Ayn Rand, though she's a little difficult to read. Maybe I'd have an easier time if I had some "companion" readers. The genres I like are pretty much kids' books...took a children's lit class in college and loved it, so Harry Potte;, the Pendragon series, The Chris D'Lacy series: The Fire Within; The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas FlamelI also love Robin Cook, Michael Palmer (medical thrillers), Faye Kellerman, Jonathan Kellerman to name a few...Bite me, cupcake!
-
Perhaps we can get @ScaryMommy to set up a whole category for this, so we can have multiple discussions on multiple books going and if it's one in which you're interested or reading you can join in?Bite me, cupcake!
-
I just finished Live to Tell by Lisa Gardener. She has lots of books, this is the second one of hers I have read and I really like her style.
I'm about to start Use Me by Elissa Schappell, if anyone is interested.
Also, might be a good idea to see what's available to download onto a kindle for FREE so it's easily accessible to many. Just a thought.
A good place to start is www.pixelofink.com or pixel of ink on Facebook. Everyday they list five FREE kindle downloads ...I love purple; I love cats. Imagine if cats were purple ... -
@BellaBefana I have a list of classics that I've been trying to make my way through, I would love to have a reason to read them! So I'm also down with classics. And I'm totally with @Demanada; no vampires or bow and arrow peeps :D

Yeah, me too, lol.
Ha, me too (three?). I keep hearing about it and think "Why not just read the Sleeping Beauty Trilogy instead?" You know, the one Anne Rice did long ago under a pseudonym, if you want D/s fiction.
I admit I read and loved the Hunger Games trilogy though. My son (DS14) brought it home from school and urged me to read it and I did and I was hooked.
@AloneOverseas -- I am warming up to Lisa Gardner. DW likes her stuff, I ran out of stuff to read so I read one, pretty good though her writing style bugs me. I can't remember the title of whatever I just read. Now I am reading a Harlen Coben book "Just One Look" and just finished another one by him, um, can't remember the title at the moment.
I like suspense. I like Dean Koontz though my uber intellectual friends would laugh at that, whatever. I can't stand the way many of the suspense writers title their books though, they all sound the same! Just One Look, No more chances, One second chance, Don't Look, Secrets Lightening, Rain, Midnight... whatever! Dumb titles.
I like memoirs too. Read "Bastard out of Carolina" a couple months ago. Anyway I am not super picky and I will go to this one thrift store nearby when they have a "box of books" sale... they sell a huge box of books, as much as you can fill it with, for $5. I'm good with that! :)
I read therapeutically. Reading at night is the only way I can sleep because it effectively shuts off the noise that is my brain. It helps me battle anxiety. So I have to read fiction for that to work for me, and I read at least a couple paperbacks a week! I read fast and I kind of devour books.

I'm in! Loved the City of Bones series but haven't got to the prequels yet. Bought the first book. Was thinking of reading Eragon series or Lord of the Rings (since it's the only thing on my shelf I haven't read yet). Love fantasy fiction. That Beauty one sounds good by Anne Rice. Things I've read in last year or so: Matched, Inkheart trilogy (much more than the movie), Reckless (by same author), Hunger Games, Fablehaven series (I have preteen kids), Beautiful Creatures series, Children of the Lamp, Enchanted by Orson Scott Card (modern sleeping beauty up there with PrincessBride), Host by Myers etc.
Like classics too like Ethan Frome, Les Mis, Wurthering Heights, Dandelion Wine etc so that would be fun to do as well.
I'd even read 50 shades to see what the hype is about.
I'm always misunderstood because the written word is the worst form of communication...you can't see me smiling =-) -
Enchanted was such a sweet story @Live4Peace I am a big OSC fan. I have a copy of that one on my bookshelf. His Ender series is great, as well as the Speaker series, I am also a fan of Pastwatch. He also has a great anthology called America, which is short stories based on a post-apocolyptic US.
-
Oh, yeah, Inkheart was really good...that might be a good one to start with, since it's about books!Bite me, cupcake!
-
The Vampire Diaries was made into a show. The show is WAY better than the books! Twilight was made into movies, casting was terrible. -_-
Anne Rice is a good vampire author. Her latest works if I remember right have been religious fiction?
I also tend to like teenage novels. -
@Charlotte-Sometimes I love memoirs! Especially about mental illnesses because it reminds me that I handle mine really well.
-
I read just about anything. It is like phase : historical then paranormal, then contemporary. Then thrillers. I think the stuff i dont really read is bios .. don't know why.Never wanted to read the book The Vampire Diaries... i watch the show wich is pretty good. I read Twillight to see what the fuss was about.. didnt like it that much. But Anne Rice... those i liked!!!Frankly as long as the book takes me somewhere and makes me escape the reality for a while it is great. It is for me to know and you to dot dot dot.

I've heard that here latest book is not as overly religious, it's a werewolf story called "The Wolf Gift". Her religious beliefs still come through but not like some of her other recent stuff.
I read the Vampire Chronicles starting at age 18. Wow, I think it's time to re-read them and see what I think 20ish years later! ;)

Anyone read the Tanya Huff series ? Blood Ties ?It is for me to know and you to dot dot dot.
-
O.K., it's Twilight I was talking about, I'm not really interested in those. Vampire Diaries either, but only because the step niece from hell liked them...Bite me, cupcake!
-
We have a sm book club fb page too :)
-
I am willing to participate as well and would love to have a reason to make time to read something (it is hard to make time with my babies). However, like others, I am not interested in the "50 shades..." series.
-
I do love to read and have oohhh about 200 pages of books on my nook. I love the supernatural fiction because I've been attracted to it since I was about 13 (sooo about half my life). Outside of the whole double bow and arrow Sherrilyn Kenyon (whom I got to meet once and she's amazingly funny)
These are all supernatural authors but I do read a lot of medical thrillers too and old school Dean Koontz
Larissa Ione (her Immortal riders series is about he 4 horsemen)
Angela Knight and her mageverse series has a great take on vamps
Katie MacAllister (?) is amazingly funny to read
Patricia Briggs is another great read but hers is mostly werewolf based.
Just read a series but I can't remember the author's name, Divergence is the name of the book.
Kevin Hearne has a series called The Iron Druid that is an easy read and bases a lot of the story on the Celtic Mythos but brings in all religions eventually and respectfully.
I remember Anne Rice back in the day, and the day I discovered The Beauty Series. It opened my mind to all the possibilities and I never looked back lol.
-
to be honest, there really isn't much to talk about in 50 Shades...in one respect it is fairly deep, but in most others, unless we want every body all hot and bothered...Bite me, cupcake!
-
O.K., this is the 3rd time in two days I've heard about the Beauty Series, what pseudonym did she use, so I can find them?Bite me, cupcake!

I just read a fantastic book called Scars its by Cheryl Reinfield. Its good, really good!! Plus its free on amazon!oh and Reason to Breath by Rebecca Donovan-this book is both heartbreaking and will make you scream at the end and I think its also free for KindlesYou are not my thong, so get out of my ass!!
-
I have loaned them both to a friend of mine but next week I can loan them out to another kindle if anyone wants themYou are not my thong, so get out of my ass!!

Hmmmm, so many suggestions...I'll be looking on Amazon (now my second fav website!) for some ideas to start. I would like to go with some classics rather than best sellers only because i wasn't really interested in them as a teen and they were "required" reading. Is there a preference to eBooks? I personally like to hold an actual book, but I can look specifically for electronic versions.Any author suggestions? Ayn Rand, Thomas Hardy, Dickens, anyone?Bite me, cupcake!
