i use a cup of vinegar in the laundry, it really brightens whites and colors. i let the machine fill up with water first, then add it. i also heard a few aspirin tablets in the laundry helps too.

Vanilla Extract 101 - Clean the microwave and leave it smelling sweet with this household trick! Mix 2 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract in a microwave-safe container, and zap it on high for five minutes. When it's done, remove the container and wipe down the interior of the oven. Any gunk should slide right off.

A hand full of moist sugar, placed over a bump from smacking something will keep it from swelling more. Really useful on goose eggs to the noggin.

If you have cigarettes around you can use the tobacco for insect stings, you just moisten it up and press it on the sting.

Couple days ago I found out you can use pantyhose for an Ace Wrap, I'm going to start carrying them for tourniquets I can hand out out and don't cost a testicle.

Baking soda and lemon juice will cut through most greace. Damp baking soda will also polish surfaces other cleaners would scratch or deface.

For bump and swelling and goose eggs , i use vanilla extract. Always worked for me.

After you make coffee, i empty the filter around the fondation of the house.. keeps bugs and ants away.
It is for me to know and you to dot dot dot.

Red wine, cranberry juice, or other red stains on light-colored fabrics? While it's wet, absolutely COVER it in salt. Pour that crap on. Let it sit overnight and then vacuum. Dampen and reapply if there's any stain left. My dad told me that a couple of years ago - works like a charm!

It's a bit crazy sounding, but Apple Cider Vinegar is a major cure-all for most anything! It even works well with animals. One of my cats had an ear infection so I put 50/50 diluted ACV/H2O on a cotton swab, patted it in her ear for a few days, cleared right up! Google it, you'd be surprised at the power of a little vinegar :)

Cook with it (it's great in rice or on fish!), mix it in your favorite salad dressing, add a tablespoon to our favorite juices or tea! Be creative! It's recommended that you use the unfiltered or organic stuff, I don't necessarily believe organic is any better than the cheap store bought stuff. Good luck!

So much awesome!!! I LOVE this thread!!!
I use essential oils for EVERYTHING. I drop or 2 here and there, it only takes a tiny bit and smells so wonderful!! I use it to clean and to wash. I haven't used shampoo or condtioner in months and my hair has NEVER looked so good or received so many compliments!
I use baking soda and white vinegar for hardcore cleaning. Stuck on greasy pans and soap scummy tubs.
The only chemicals I use for cleaning is the furniture spray and polish, and windex for the windows, as I've not found a suitable natural replacement.
Oh, natural weed killer, straight up vinegar. Be sure to only spray the weeds though, it will dry up any plants it touches.

i think vinegar works on windows?? i spray it on and wipe off with newspaper.

@MassHysteria, acv is apple cider vinegar:)

forgot about this one, crushed up aspirin or tylenol (can't remember which) and water to make a paste works on bug bites.

Anyone know how to get ball point pen ink out of a jacket?
“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”

You can use baking soda (or washing soda) and peroxide to clean almost any kind of stain in carpet, clothing, upholstery...anywhere you'd use any OxiClean products.

Spawn cut the bottom of his wittle foot the other day, and tracked it all through the bedroom...that happens to be covered in white carpet. Ugh... Straight peroxide. Good as new.

Baking soda, peroxide, white vinegar, lemons or lemon juice... There's not much that can't be done with some combination of any of those.

I have stainless steel cookware, which, contrary to it's name, manages to look quite horrible pretty easily! I use the baking soda and vinegar to clean it. If it's a tougher spot, I use salt and vinegar. The salt doesn't create the chemical reaction with the vinegar like baking soda does, but it is slightly more abrasive for scrubbing.

I haven't managed to get hold of any soapflakes, for all my wanting to make stuff at home, but I HAVE found, that I can buy the 99cent box of Sun laundry detergent from Walmart, and mix it with Boraz and washing soda, and save myself quite a ton on laundry detergent.

I also use my own mixture for the dishwasher too. (That was purely by accident, I let us run out of dishwashing soap--totally and completely. None for the sink, and none for the dishwasher, and we didn't have the funds to run into town for a few days.) I mixed a quarter cup of the Sun, with a cup of washing/baking soda, in a small bucket, and then use 2 tablespoons of that in the dishwasher, with white vinegar in the rinse agent compartment.

I second the peroxide thing.  I had a white cotton nightgown that I bled all over, more than once, and the stains were "set in" by the dryer.  (TMI sorry, I bleed heavily)...

I poured peroxide straight on the stains and left it to soak and they were all gone that day! :) Good as new.

The other day I scrubbed my shower tiles with a half a lemon dipped in borax.  It left a weird film that was kind of hard to get off (not terrible, came off w/a wet rag) but it smelled great and got the soap scum off. And I used it on the faucet and fixtures and they were really shiny. Rubbing alcohol is also good for shining bathroom and kitchen fixtures.

I made my own laundry detergent last week with castile soap (Dr Bronner's lavender), borax, and washing soda.  So far so good.  When I washed something that had been peed on by the cat I added vinegar to the wash.

I also diluted the Dr Bronner's for use as a body wash.  I have very sensitive skin and it works fine for me but I dilute it because full strength it is a little drying.

Sore throat:  gargle with salt water several times a day.

Earache:  warm oil (olive, garlic, almond), put a few drops with a dropper, cover with a warm towel or heating pad

Toothache:  in a pinch, crushed cloves, you can make a poultice by opening up a teabag, empty the tea into the trash, crushing the cloves and adding a few drops of vanilla extract, wrapping it all back up and tying it off with a small bit of string.  Put it as close to the source of pain as possible.  It tastes bad but numbs the pain somewhat.

Apple cider vinegar and warm water in a shallow bath, sit in the bath to help relieve yeast infection itchiness. Another yeast infection relief method is plain, unsweetened cold yogurt, you can actually cover a pad with it and use it to soothe irritated and itchy nether regions.  No sugar!!!  Just plain yogurt.

I like to make my own sugar scrub for my face with sugar, vanilla, and a bit of honey.  It exfoliates and leaves your skin crazy soft AND smells amazing.   Great for feet too, or pretty much anywhere but it's messy, best to do in the tub/shower. :)

@sunnymomma--I used to use Aquanet or White Rain aerosol hairspray to get ink out of my work shirts...I'm not sure if it would work on a jacket or not, especially if it's been through the dryer.
