Help I need some wedding etiquette advice!
-
So I'm the MOH for my bestfriend's wedding (and besides the fact that the wedding is Saturday and I haven't written a speech) I need help with what I can put in the speech. We met through her ex husband, do you think it would be ok to mention how we met by mentioning the ex-husband?
-
Ya, I'd maybe refer to him as a mutual friend if even that.If life gives you lemons, squirt lemon juice in life's eye!
-
How would you word how we met then? I wasn't really friends with her ex husband, but my husband was good friends with him and when my husband and I starting dating, I met his friend (her ex husband) and he introduce me to his new girlfriend (which is now my Bf, we don't talk the other guy anymore). Our relationship (besides my husband and his friend) all started around the same time. I was going to say in the speech "I met Joann 7yrs ago, through her ex, as you can see we kept her...." and that would be the only time I mentioned him, but I think mentioning him, kinda sounds inappropriate, but it's how we met. The girlfriend (my Bf) ended up coming to live with me, while our at the time boyfriends, went to Afghanistan actually I think they got married right before he left, because they only new each other for not even two mths before they got married.

is there anything that you could mention about your first interaction without having to mention him?
eg "the first time i met *name* we were in a bar, she was dancing on tables. i thought "this is my kinda girl" and from there our close friendship grew into what it is today....." that kind of thing iykwim? saves having to mention him. was there anything in particular you thought about her when u first met? things like that, takes the focus off of him and places attention solely on her. -
Not really, the first time we met we didn't really talk a whole lot, because we met them for a movie. Our fist interactions was always as a "couple date" kind of setting. He was kind a dick and really controlling. The first time we actually hung out by ourselves, was when they left on deployment and that's when we became close.
-
can you use the first time you hung out instead of when you first met?

How is this (This is just a quick rough draft that I put together a few minutes ago after procrastinating on the computer all night lol)...
Hi, my name is Chalise and I am the Matron of honor, Joann's best-friend and sister. I know what your thinking, "I didn't know she had a younger, black sister"... but really, Joann is very much like a sister to me. We met about 7 yrs ago and we have been through so much in those 7 yrs. In many ways, it felt like we grew up together, because our lives have changed so much, since the first time we met. We were basically thrown together, when she moved in with me. I remember thinking when I first met her. "Oh wow, she is like half an adult size and so quiet", "she has no idea what she has gotten herself into". "I hope she can handle me", but as we quickly got to know each other, I realized she was just as crazy as I was... which is why we are so great together. I love this girl so much, my family adores her, she has been apart of so many big events in my life. She was there for my very private wedding, my first daughter's birth (literally in the room) and whenever I've really needed her. I'm incredibly happy that she has found Eric, who loves her the way she deserves, because her pint size body, has so much love to give and the fact that Eric not only loves her, but can put up with her crazy ways, makes me love Eric that much more. I am so eager to have him as part of my family, if he will have us. I'm sure after meeting me, he may need more time to think about it (I promise you, I will grow on you).... I wish you both eternal love, joy, happiness patience, because you definitely need that need that to deal with the same man everyday... and Joann, and may you grow together through years. Thank you for allowing me to be apart of this special and wonderful moment and I hope to share many more joyous occasions, with you two.

Love it! Sounds fantastic!

Thank you everyone for your help! I feel much better now that Ive gotten that out of the way. Now I can focus on the 80 thousand other tasks she has assigned for me. She has me working like a slave on Saturday...Lol. Let's hope I can juggle making sure everything gets done, (helping make sure everything gets set up correctly) taking care of her, myself and my two little girls (they are both flower girls). I'm really never going to accept this position ever again! Not to mention I'm starving! I've been juicing for two weeks, to make sure I fit this Damn dress! Oh yeah, and I'm Mc'ing the whole night.

Sounds perfect. And really, once your up there just speak from the heart and let your written speech be a guide. It's always better when u speak from the heart IMO :)

Okay you need to know that I am a total sap when it comes to anything wedding related. I just love love! But @sailaway, your speech brought tears to my eyes and I don't even know you or your friend. I think what you wrote is beautiful!
