Tylenol or Advil and run a cool (not cold) bath for him. You can give both Tylenol and Advil on a cycle (Tylenol every 4 hours/Advil every 6) to stay ahead of the fever.

    How old is he?

Additionally: you might want to give a double dose of acetaminophen right away. This is coming from the Dr. Sears web page:

First step – decide if the fever warrants treatment as discussed above.
    Medications

Acetaminophen– this fever reducer/pain reliever has been around a long time and is effective is most cases. It can be given every 4 hours. Click on it for dosing chart.
New research in 2001 has shown that giving an initial double dose of acetaminophen for high fevers is both safe and more effective to bring down that high fever fast. Only give a double dose if the fever is high. You can only give a double dose once every few days if needed. Any other doses should be the regular dose.
Ibuprofen– this newer medication is also effective for fever and pain. It often works better for higher fevers, and lasts longer too. It can be given every 6 hours. It was previously only approved for children 6 months and older. Recently it was approved safe and effective for infants down to two months of age. Click on it for dosing chart.

Using both medications – it is best to only use one of these two medications. However, if one by itself isn't enough or wears off too soon, then it is safe to give the other medication on top of the first without waiting. Another option is to alternate between them every 3 hours. Give acetaminophen at 8:00, ibuprofen at 11:00, acetaminophen at 2:00 and so on.
WARNING – don't give ASPIRIN to children 12 and under.

@chocoholic, we have been doing the cycle thing with the drugs since about 4 and have only got it down to 102.8. The only difference is he takes both at the same time every 5 hours per his ped who I talked to at about 6:30.

It might be ER time if the fever has gone up while on medication.

I would go to the ER

I agree. If his fevers gone up while on meds, it's ER time. Keep up posted.

Er, but stay calm, kids can sustain a high fever like that without permanent damage. No need to get worked up, they will get it down.

I agree with ER. Most likely nothing, but don't take the risk. And find a new doctor.

I hope everything's okay. But I agree with the other ladies - if the fever goes up instead of down after meds, something's going on that needs closer examination. Hugs!

Hope everything goes well. My daughter used to have chronic ear infections which cause petit mal seizures. She didn't convulse, but she stared into space and couldn't focus and couldn't respond. So sorry the little one is suck but ER is the best solution if the fever won't come down even with meds. And a tepid bath with cause goosebumps and shivers which can increase a fever accordin to my pediatrician

Two of my kids had seizures with fevers. They usually were caused by ear infections.

@madme and @dreamnofpalmtrees, yes high fevers will cause convulsions and seizures, apparently I had them as a kid,  Whenever Alex's would get above 102 I would go to the Urgent Treatment immediately.  Keep us updated Mommy.

Well, I'm glad I took him in.... My the time we got there his fever was over 105... And we don't live far from the hospital, it took 10 minutes to get there. He was complaining of really bad lower right abdominal pain, I didn't think anything of it because he was saying his whole body hurt. They did an US for appendicitis but couldn't locate the appendix because he would lay still.... About punched a dude for snapping at him to lay still. It hasn't been ruled out so we are having to watch him closely and if anything on the list of symptoms the doc gave us appears we have to take him back straight away!

@sammie, they said it could just be a virus... My daughter is starting to cough really bad and has had a fever all morning too so i am thinking the absominal pain is just part of his all over pain!

I couldnt believe he snapped at him either, "jaxon you have to hold still, I know it hurts but I can't see anything if you curl your legs up" in a very rude tone, died he is three and sick, he is curlin his legs up because he is cold and achy you dick!

His fever is staying pretty high, tried to bribe him to eat by buying
McDonald's chicken nuggets (something he gets as a treat after a day of shopping or running errands if good) he took two bites, ate the apples and hadn't touched anything else. He hasn't left his bed since we got home from the hospital and doesn't want to be touched because we are so much colder than him he says it hurts.

Shivering is your body's way of generating heat. If he is shivering put a light blanket on him.

Yes it doesn't make sense that they would release him until they knew for sure it wasn't appendicitis. Especially since it only takes seconds for it to become a serious situation when that happens.

They only test they did was an ultrasound because of his abdominal pain complaint... He has just a pair of super thin shorts on but that's it. The shivering is a sign that his body thinks it should be warmer than it is by initiating muscle movements to generate heat.... Meaning his hypothalamus, because of the virus, has a "new" core temp that it's trying to reach so it causes the body to feel cold and shiver to reach the new temp. That's why we feel cold when we have fevers until it peaks.

I called his doc back because his temp is already 103.3 and he started shivering again meaning his temp is going back up and he has been taking meds every three hours rotating Tylenol and Motrin. I don't want his fever back close to 105, that's too high! I am so uncomfortable with a fever of just 102, imagine what he feels with it let alone 105.

I thought the same thing! I had to fight them to take his temp again because the "check in" nurse took and recorded it at 100.6.... Finally after requesting a new er nurse I just asked her to touch him and tell me that he felt like 100.6.... She did and then took it rectally at 104.5. I have been watching him closely and randomly lightly press on his tummy, every time when it's he right side he says it hurts but the left side he does nothing.

Waiting for the doc to call me back, just changed his diaper and it smelled so bad.... His urine is way concentrated. I thought he had pooped but it was jut pee. That is now scaring me too. Ugh, I hate this.

I would take him back and demand they take a closer look at him. Especially if he's still in pain and you think they cut corners in any way.

Take  him back... concentrated pee is showing he's dehydrated (because he probably isn't drinking because he feels like crap) that will also make his temp go up, not enough fluids to cool his body down.

*hugs* @monkeynmoo it may be a virus but his body isn't handling it right. he needs fluids if nothing else. :( poor baby

It's a virus, all the blood work and the ct scan for his abdomen came back normal! The only thing I hate is they over medicated him and now he feels great so is bouncing off the walls! That fever is gonna come back like a slap in the face, if not worse, than it was before. I am not lolling forward to it.

Missing a huge $$ day tomorrow at work which I am a tad bit sucked up about but my baby monkey is worth it.

Right now I am rather pissed at df, for home from the hospital an not even 30 minutes later he was out the door I drink beers Wth buddies. He called in sick child to work tonight because of our son, I have been up since 1 am, took a 4 hour nap an dealt with two kids all day, sure... I guess I deserve to stay home again and continue taking care of the children.

I told him when he asked and said he would only be gone for an hour " do what you want I guess".....um.... Dude, that's code for "go and you will sleep alone". Pillows already moved to the couch.

Now if the baby starts having a high fever I would go to the ER and camp out in the waiting room if they can't get it down and try to send you home.
I will pray that everyone in your house get better.
