Ok Scaries, I just got my first crockpot. I am not a cookist. I have a difficult time with anything beyond sandwiches. My grocery money is very limited. What do I do with the thing?

I will be watching this thread.  Every time I tried to use the thing I end up with some unidentifiable mush-food.  So I eventually got rid of mine but keep thinking I should try again.

I like to do pot roast in mine. Toss the roast in the crockpot with a couple cups of water, 1 Lipton onion soup packet, chopped up veggies (carrots, potatoes and onion is what I use). Cover and cook on low about 7-8 hours. served with crusty bread! This is one of our favorite crockpot meals. You can even toss the roast in frozen but need to let it cook longer.

I also cook up big batches of dried beans and then separate and freeze into portion sizes. Much cheaper than canned beans.

I'll be watching this too. Too darn hot to heat up the oven.

Yes I did @pallasathene!! Ok for starters I've got an incredibly easy bbq pulled pork and a london broil/ pot roast.
I am horrible with names of meat cuts so I'm gonna kinda guess here. Its more of a 'when I see it I know' kinda thing lol
I use a pork shoulder I believe(may have to ask my fiancee if he remembers), it has a bone and a huge fatty side. I put it in the crock pot with my favorite bbq sauce, some brown suger and honey. When it starts to fall of the bone I take it out and cut the hunk of fat off and use two forks to shred the meat off the bone. I put the meat back in and usually put it on the keep warm setting while I make some sides. Then serve it on buns.
Either use a london broil(I only get it when its on sale) or another cut(will have to ask fiancee, my brain is like pudding tonight!) take one can of cream of mushroom soup, one can tomato, one packet of french onion dip mix and cook until it shreds and mmmmm!

@nessarose had a crock pot thread a while back!! Maybe someone can find it?

I will have more recipes and better explanations soon, because Im starting my own blog! Been working on it a few weeks and have been writing all night so my brain is fried right now lol

@nessarose I forgot about that one!

    beef stroganoff

I use cubed stew meat 2 lbs I think
2 cans of golden mushroom soup
a few tablespoons worcestershire sauce (i use like 4)
    1/2 cup water
    8oz block of cream cheese

combine it all except the cream cheese
cut up the cream cheese in little cubes
it takes like 8 hours on low (or whenever the meat is done and tender)
then add the cream cheese and stir until its all melted and combined
usually i put the lid back on for ten mins or so then its all done
    serve that over egg noodles!

again sorry my recipes are all scattery, im so tired and ready for bed lol

I put a couple jars of spaghetti sauce (I use Ragu Tomato, Onion and Garlic) and some browned ground beef, turkey or chicken in the crock pot and let it cook til its hot then dump in some raw noodles. It only takes about 30 minutes til they are all cooked.

I have some others but I will have to post more later.

I use mine for roast too. Only I put the roast in, a can of coke and a can of cream of mushroom soup. That's it. When it's about an hour from being done, I add onion, potatoes, and carrots. Nom Nom.

Also cook chili and beans in mine, chicken and noodles, chicken for chicken and dumplings. Oh man I am starving and it's 4:36 am. I NEED some chicken and dumplings

Oh my I have soooo many recipes.
Meatballs and spaghetti sauce ( no instruction needed really).

meatballs or cubed chicken (lightly browned in sautée pan) put in the crockpot and cover with cream of mushroom soup. Stir in a packet of Lipton onion soup, 3 cloves of garlic, and 2 cups of sour cream. Cook on low for 4 hours. Serve over rice or pasta.

Watch for the sm cook book. I have several soup recipes I gave them that go in the crockpot.

Easiest one pot meal is the roast.  I do the same as mentioned above, beef roast, potatoes, carrots onions, onion soup mix, but...I DO NOT add water.  The beef juices are enough.  And then you can use the drippings to make a gravy if you want.  This one will work with a pork roast too.

The other one I like is a loose-meat type sandwich.  Pound of hot sausage (bulk), pound of ground beef, brown both in pan.  Put in slow cooker with sliced onions, green and red peppers, and if you like hot stuff, you can use some banana peppers.  Just cook it until the veggies are crisp-tender and serve it on sandwich rolls.  I sometimes add a can of diced tomatoes to this as well.

I have an easy as pie bean dip I make too.  Can of black beans, can of kidney beans, diced onions, can of diced tomatoes with green chillies (SP?) packet of taco seasoning, and a small can of tomato sauce.  stir it up, throw it in a 1.5 qt slow cooker, and cook til hot.  Serve with tortilla chips.

Pork chops and apples are good too. Brown chops on both sides, (season how you like, I use salt and pepper, sometimes garlic powder) throw them in a crock pot with peeled sliced apples, cook until the chops are done and apples are tender. You can throw a handful of brown sugar in if you use tart apples, and maybe sprinkle cinnamon in. I serve this with buttered noodles as a side.

Kielbasa and saurkraut.  So easy.  Can of kraut, kielbasa cut into bun size pieces, cook til kielbasa hot.  DH and I add brown sugar to the kraut, but not everyone likes it sweet and sour. You can also rinse the kraut before-hand if you want to cut the sourness. Serve on hoagie rolls.  With mashed as a side, of course...lol

I use my slow cooker alot, and these are my "tried and true" recipies.  There are always a ton of cookbooks at half price book stores, and second hand stores.  Maybe look for some that are strictly for slow cookers.  Most crockpot recipies I see in books are pretty basic, so even if you aren't that great a cook you can still throw together a good meal.

@katz_meow I've got another good pork chop recipe for the crockpot...

Any type of chops will do, but the thin boneless ones are cheapest and usually have several in them.

Season chops with salt and pepper and brown on both sides in skillet.

Mix together about a half a bottle of bbq (your favorite), half a jar of peach preserves, and a 12 oz can of cola. Dredge the chops in the sauce and layer them in the crockpot. Pour the rest of the sauce over the chops. Cook on low for 4-6 hours (longer for thicker chops) and then dig in. They're so good!!

Pulled pork in the crockpot is amazing!!  I just put in a pork shoulder roast, 2 cans of dr. pepper, and a packet of onion soup mix.  Cook it on low for about 8 hours then drain it, shred it, and put it back in the crock with your favorite bbq sauce...I put it on buttered, toasted onion buns with a bit of cheddar cheese...or coleslaw.  It's awesome!!

Chicken Cordon Bleu in the slow cooker....another great one!!

6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup

    1 cup milk

    4 ounces sliced ham

    4 ounces sliced Swiss cheese

1 (8 ounce) package herbed dry bread stuffing mix

    1/4 cup butter, melted

Mix together the cream of chicken soup and milk in a small bowl. Pour enough of the soup into a slow cooker to cover the bottom.

Layer chicken breasts over the sauce.

Cover with slices of ham and then Swiss cheese.

Pour the remaining soup over the layers, stirring a little to distribute between layers.

Sprinkle the stuffing on top, and drizzle butter over stuffing.

Cover, and cook on Low for 4 to 6 hours, or 2 to 3 hours on High.

    @madhatmommy - that sounds FANTASTIC.

My sister will literally throw a whole chicken in hers, put a little bit of water in the bottom, put it on low and then come back after work and make sides.  She swears by this (I personally have never tried it).  A whole chicken here is pretty cheap.

I make all kinds of things in mine: beef stew, chili, pulled pork, chowders, etc... I am at work so I don't have any of the recipes with me.. but look up allrecipes.com and they have a TON.

@beachmommy - I buy whole chickens at ALDI  or Sam's Club for like 4 bucks and do the same thing, season them really well and put it in with just a bit of water or chicken broth on the bottom.  Let it cook all day and then make mashed potatoes and stuffing.  Or you can just take it out and shred it up to use in casseroles or for chicken tacos...so easy.

Oh oh I forgot sausage and scabbage.
Two packages of smoked sausage or kielbasa sliced. One head of cabbage cut into bite size pieces. One can of corn and a (large) can of tomato sauce. And one (large)can of stewed tomatoes. Dump it all in the crock pot and cook one low for 8 hours. Cabbage should be fork tender. My kids love it and it's the only way they will eat cabbage. If u don't like cabbage don't make it cuz the whole house will smell like it :)

I'm making beef stroganoff in my crockpot today.  :)

    2 lbs. stew meat
    1/4 cup flour
1 package Lipton Beefy Onion soup mix
1 can pieces & stems mushrooms
    8 oz. of sour cream

I start off by spraying my crockpot with Pam.  Then you coat the meat with the flour.  Toss it in the crockpot, sprinkle the soup mix on it, and throw in the mushrooms.  I add a little water as well.  Cook it on low for 8-10 hours or high for 4-6 hours.  When the meat is tender, stir in the sour cream.  I serve it over mashed potatoes, but egg noodles work too.  (This recipe is pretty much what the soup mix box says.)

Just made this one tonight and it was wonderful!!  Everyone here loved it which is a pretty big accomplishment since I have a house full of picky eaters and very few nights when everyone is happy with what is made...I got it off Pinterest, love that site :)

    Slow Cooker Rotisserie Chicken -

    2 Tbsp. paprika
    1/2 tsp. cayenne
    2 tsp. onion powder
    3 cloves minced garlic
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. black pepper

Combine in a small bowl and add in enough water or oil to make a paste.  Rub on raw chicken and place in slow cooker with NO water.  Cook on low for 6-8 hours.

    * Now me being how I am in the kitchen I made a few adjustments to the recipe.  She used a whole chicken, I used split breasts.  I lifted the skin and rubbed the paste under that so it sat right on the meat instead of on top of the skin.  I left out the cayenne (peptic ulcer and hiatal hernia make it a no no for me) I also wadded up some foil and placed it on the bottom of the crock and then put the chicken on top of that to keep it out of the juices.  We really enjoyed it but the next time I am adding some more salt to the rub or seasoned salt, it was a tad bland for us.

@breakoutqueen, what about a taco bar? You could offer chicken or beef. You just throw the chicken breasts in the crockpot for a few hours (depends on how many) and they are fully cooked and ready to shred. Easy peasy!! Then offer beans, rice, and all the fixings like salsa, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc.

@breakoutqueen chili should work for a large crowd if it's cool where you are. Put the ground beef, tomatoes, beans and some seasoning in the crockpot. Add in some onions and peppers if you have them.

Serve with shredded cheese, sour cream and corn chips or cornbread to top the chili. Super easy!

I made mexican lasagna tonight, layer tortillas, beans(whole or refried), salsa, cheese, enchilda sauce, and black olives.Cook on low for a few hours. You can add meat, but we do a lot of meatless meals. Add sour cream before eating. My kids love it. I make regular lasagna a lot, too. I use uncooked noodles and add a couple cups of water to the sauce. It's the easiest meal ever.

A 24 hour chuck pot roast browned in butter and garlic. I cooked it in several spices and soy sauce.

    3 cups of water

    1/4 cup soy sauce

Season to taste: Lawrys, Onion powder, meat tenderizer etc

3 hours before serving add potatoes, carrots, celery etc.

The meat just FALLS apart. Make sure to keep water level just above the meat and flip the meat around 8am.

Think of your problems as challenges to overcome not obstacles to be avoided.

Aldi's (and I've seen it at Wal-Mart) has a pot roast packaged with carrots, potatoes and onion cut up and ready to go in, as well as a seasoning packet.  You literally just open it up, dump it in and walk away.  This is about all I'm capable of in the mornings :)

I found this recipe on Pinterest. I made the sauce yesterday but used kelibasa instead of chicken. My family and my kids friends LOVED it.

    Sweet Baby Rays BBQ Chicken

4-6 pieces boneless skinless chicken breasts (i threw them in frozen... even easier!)
1 bottle BBQ sauce (sweet baby ray's all the way!)
    1/4 c vinegar
    1 tsp. red pepper flakes
    1/4 c brown sugar
    1/2 - 1 tsp. garlic powder

mix BBQ sauce with all ingredients listed under it. place chicken in crockpot. pour sauce over it and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours. you pretty much don't even have to stir it
