I'm not here to talk about romney or obama, I just have a general thought about all of this political stuff going on.
Why do they raise millions of campaign dollars to smear each other. I think I would perfer to vote for someone who spent that money on charities or programs who really need it. They talk about what a horrible financial crisis were in, yet they blow, once again, millions to prove how they are better than the other. I would want someone in office who proved before hand that they were worthy and really cared about the public. Someone who didn't use his pocketbook, or supporters pocketbook, as a reason to be in office. I'd want someone who really got down and dirty with what's wrong and helped it. Using all the influence they had to create more money for education or towards cleaning up rough areas. I'm not sure, maybe I have the wrong idea of what all this is supposed to be about.

Here is France politics are not perfect BUT
1. Each candidate is given the exact same amount of time on TV. Political commercials are grouped together back to back and they play only a few times a few weeks before the vote.
2. Campaign contributions don't really exists, well not in the same way. And the former pres. is being brought up on charges for accepting illegal money from L'Oreal's wealthy empress.
Here I found something that explains the process a bit here :
I must say that it does make the politic season more bearable. And there is no big hoopla or parade when the new president comes in (which is just days after the vote). Not saying THIS is the right way but I totally agree with you that all the money is being wasted. It is a true shame.Official electoral campaigns in France are very brief. Campaign finance
is strictly regulated. All forms of paid commercial advertisements
through the press or by any audiovisual means are prohibited during the
three months preceding the election. Instead, political advertisements
are aired free of charge on an equal basis for all of the candidates on
national television channels and radio stations during the official
campaign. Campaign donations and expenditures are capped. Candidates
must appoint an independent financial representative to handle all their
financial matters relating to the election. Campaign accounts are
audited by a special commission. Candidates whose campaign accounts are
certified may be reimbursed up to 50 percent of their expenses by the
state if they meet certain conditions.

It seems especially idiotic to me this time around when so many people are struggling just to get by. How you can pledge support by giving millions of dollars to support a presidential campaign and it's ads and in the same breath complain about raising tax rates is baffling to me. Soooo, you have a million dollars for a candidate to blow on ad space and the like but you can't afford to be taxed at a higher rate so the country can reduce the national deficit?? Makes sense, no??

@dabomb its sad I wish it all made more sense
@beam its nonstop smearing where I live. Since our state is one of the hardest hit w the economy (NV) they run their ads 24/7 and its super irritating since all we see for commercials is obama or romney,
@grits it doesn't make sense how romney raised 800 MILLION, like holy cow! Even if they donated 1mil to each charity it would make a massive difference. But no. They go and use it on fancy dinners and expensive tour buses, and I'm sure they pocket a lot of it since I would assume its difficult to spend so much on junk. How many people could a business hire for 1mil? Instead they just hand it over to the person they want to win president.Without reason you have Rhythm and Rhyme the type of girl who knows how to have a good time... Yeah, I agree but sadly, it's the nature of the game.
I belong to causes for my party and what makes me sick is they always ask for money when signing certain petitions.
-
I agree with them doing something else with the money. It is absolutely mind blowing to me that they just throw that much money away every election year. I could not (not that I have the money to) see myself paying the tens of thousands of dollars for one of those uptight meals. I also could not see myself justifying throwing money at a person who is going to 'lead' our country in a completely different way than I would. It is no more than pissing contest and all it does is leave people in this country a little more pissed off.
@fatchickonabike I usually dont vote to keep someone out but vote for who I want in, this year time it will be the lesser of 2 evils

If it was just during elections that would be one thing, but it's all of the time. And now with all of the new laws Super Pac's, Super Duper Pac's, Super Duper Secret Super Pacs, it's just going to get worse. Politicians are bought and paid for, it's a sad fact. Unless the lobbying and campaign finance laws are severely reformed, this is how it's going to be.

@superscarymommy, I have been saying the same thing! If we are trillions of dollars in debt, why do politicians raise and spend millions to get elected where they do absolutely nothing for us? If they just applied the money they raised to programs and charities for the people they claim they are trying to help, we would see a much bigger difference in this world than we do by just electing these people.

@mountainprincess I agree. Someone needs to take control over all this for real.Without reason you have Rhythm and Rhyme the type of girl who knows how to have a good time... @superscarymommy, agreed!
-
totally agree... those who can make a difference with their money...rarely do. What a waste! I vote for limited funds and equal airtime. I think it's also unfair that we only hear from a few of the candidates (while the rest on the ballot are ignored).
Politics are f'ed up no matter how you look at it.

Here in Colorado we are getting bombarded with ads for the general election already. When I was younger I always wanted to live in a swing state, so that I could make a difference with the election. I grew up in Illinois, so we never got ads, except very close to November. Now I am wishing that was the case! I can't imagine what it will be like after the conventions. I am so glad I will have a newborn to take care of so that I won't have time to pay attention. For right now, I am on modified rest, so all I do is watch TV!

I just can't believe electoral campaigns last two years in the States! Here it's six weeks, start to finish, and everyone's sick of it by the end. I can't imagine two years. The guy's barely gotten himself elected and he has to get back on the campaign trail. No wonder they need millions."The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shock-proof bullshit detector.” - Ernest Hemingway

Two words - Citizens United. Thats why so much damn money is able to be brought in by the candidates. Coporations are now people.

Yes, but corporations are treated much better than people. It is ridiculous!
