#201204 Angry about mouth noises

That is an actual disorder called Misophonia. Some people are merely irritated by those noises others get truly angry. I can't figure out how to get a link on here with my phone so you can read about it, but Google it and you'll see. Kelly Ripa has it.

I swear I could have written this confession. The ONLY way that I can sit with others who are eating is if there is a LOT of background noise going on. I can hear lips smacking, potato chips crunching and the squishing of food in the mouths of others...and myself. I chew very slowly when I eat so that I can minimize the noise in my own head. :x

I actually wrote the confession....I have had it since I was a child.  I knew it was some kind of disorder and then saw Kelly Ripa interviewed about it, so I was able to put a name to it and know that I am not just irritable and crazy.  Whenever we eat in my household, we put the microwave fan on because I cannot stand the noise...I think my blood pressure rises to unhealthy levels.  I so wish there was a cure for this because it interferes with life.  People have to eat and yet it makes me angry.  I hate going to the movies just because of the noises there...I end up shooting people dirty looks...and I am not a mean person, it's just that the noise brings something out in me that I can't control!  Thank you WhoDatIs and Not_hisAnymore for your posts...it helps to know that others understand :)

My daughter has this. She's 10 and for the past year she's been having issues when we eat. I casually said something to my doctor about it and she told me it was real that my daughter isn't just being ornery. She wears earplugs now so she can hear less at mealtimes. It makes her own chewing noises louder but her own noises don't bother her.
I have it to a mild degree and more-so when I'm tired or stressed. Quite a few people in my family have it as well.

I didn't know its a disorder. Omg I'm not just a raving bitch? My poor brother growing up was constantly getting told to eat nice, my kids too, and DH is the worst! I'm so glad its not just me, it gets right under my skin and i feel like bashing heads together.

Is it possible to have a mild case of this? When my husband makes noises like this I want to hurt him physically. Although its just him... So maybe there's an underlying issue there. Lol. Never mind. I just answered my own question.

Wow. I didn't know that... Add it to the cracker jack box which is my brain. Although I dont have it as bad as some of my family members. The kids having gum in the car is enough to send me over the edge. They know that I will most likely pull over and make em all spit it out in a fit of rage.... So we try to avoid gum in the car.

I thought I was just crazy. Matter of fact I posted a status on fb yesterday about wanting to hurt two bitches at the doctors office because one was smacking her gum and the other was rolling a cough drop around in her mouth and it was clanging on her teeth. I even bitched about it to the nurse. LOL

I cannot stand to sit near my daughter when hse eats because she makes so much noise. Every time I say something my dh assures me she isn't doing anything wrong. I tried to eat with ear plugs in but I couldn't stand the noise of myself chewing.

We now sit in the living room to eat so the tv can be on. If I hear one of my kids chewing or swallowing I make them go sit at the table in the dining room.

I really thought I was just a bitch. That might still be it.

when girls in porn make slurping noises while giving a bj I have to turn it off. It kills everything for me

In college there was a girl who sat behind me and snapped her gum constantly and I was afraid that I was going to stand up and just tackle her...I had visions of getting hauled out of class in handcuffs.

Popcorn, gum, hard candy, utensils and teeth, crinkling bags, slurping and any other food related noises turn me into an evil person....I just want to hurt someone!  It really sucks and I worry about how it will affect my kids!  I wish they could figure out how to fix it!

You know I also wonder how much of it is a mother's heightened senses. Similar to sense of smell being more sensitive during/after pregnancy. Misophonia starts in childhood but maybe mother's get a mild case of it too after having children, kind of like a bad present from mother nature...

Oh my, I think I have this!  When DH eats cereal, I end up leaving the room!  I know Kelly had the same issues that I did, I just didn't know it's a real disorder!

Gum chewing is the worst for me, but any kind of chewing might send me over the edge.

Um, I guess you can add me to the list of people with Misophonia. And here I just thought everyone around me was gross!! I seriously can NOT stand the sound of anyone eating anything. Some days are worse than others. I think that's why I enjoy eating more in a restaurant--the constant din in the background drowns out the chewing/slurping/swallowing sounds. Nice to know I'm not just a looney bitch!! Well, at least not for that reason...
