Ok before I get into the concerned mom part...... UUUUGGGGHHHHHHH today I go to pick my 7 year old from school, and the second he gets in the car I smell nothing but poop!!! He shits in his pants alllllllll the time! I understand you have some sort of constipation issue, but WhyTF cant you go to the bathroom and sit on the damn toilet!?

Ok the concerned mother part.... No matter what we do or What we say to him, he always gets poop in his underpants. And then he smells like poop. There are times where he does it and you can't smell anything. And he never says anything he just lets it go. There is no way that he goes all day at school without people noticing. I mean can his classmates and teacher not smell when he does it? Im so scared that one day some one will call DCF and tell them my kids are unclean or something. And its all because he refuses to stop what he is doing and go sit on the toilet till he can get it out. I do not understand why he does not just go to the bathroom. What good comes from pooping in his pants? And why can't we get him to go to the bathroom?

It is extremely annoying. I used to feel bad for him and try my best to help him. But it has gotten the point where he knows it is wrong but just doesn't do anything about it. We have to buy him new underwear all the time. I now get super pissed every time I find that he shit himself again. I can not stand going out in public and then realizing my child smells like crap!
We have tried the Myra-lax stuff.

Help What do I do? How do I get him to stop doing this?

hugs!  as the mom of an OCD 4.5 year old who still has some issues pooping in the potty i know how frustrating it can be!  i know many children have 'control' issues and 'fear' issues when it comes to pooping.  have you had him evaluated by a counselor/psychiatrist?

on the whole school thing not noticing, i would be pitching a fit!  the teachers need to pay more attention.  maybe if you bring it up to them in a nice way about his 'issue' maybe they will pay a bit more attention.

    hugs hugs and more hugs!

Sigh. I know how you feel. My ds7 has just recently stopped pooping in his pants but it wouldn't take much to start it back up again. He does have Bipolar & severe anxiety issues though & that's what his stems from. He holds his poop until he just can't hold it anymore. He has held it so much that he now has encopresis. He can not tell when the poop is exiting his body. We have gone through tons of undies (& I actually need to buy more due to holes from scrubbing them clean). He has come home from school on several occasions after having a minor accident (seepage...ewwww) but he shoves his underwear up his butt & clenches his cheeks together once he realizes it so the smell is fairly well contained.

I started giving him a full dose of Miralax every day until he was all cleaned out after holding it for 10 days. Yep, it got messy. Then I have just been giving him a half dose every other day to keep it moving. He has to sit on the toilet every night & try to poop. Once he got in the habit of going every day, he has quit having accidents. But, it has only been about a month lol.

You should let the teacher know about his problem, and have her call you if need be. Then at least she will know you are aware of what is going on and that you aren't sending your child to school dirty.

Have you taken him in for evaluation?  Usually there's an underlying physiologic and/or psychological problem when child this are has issues like this.

I never thought there could be a psychological issue behind this. I will definitely be bringing that up to the doctor. Thank You!

    Google this word:

    ENCOPRESIS

And please, don't shame your child. It won't help. I can promise you that much.
    Good luck.

My DS14 has encopresis also. I feel your pain. Feel free to message me if you want to. I know your level of frustration.

@WickedDunkieJunkie  Thank you for telling me about Encopresis. When I read about it, it explained everything my child has gone through. All this time I just thought it was constipation. But obviously it is much more. I can now try to control and prevent this much better. Thank You for informing me.

As a mom who went through this exact same thing with a son for two years, my best advice is to know that this too will pass. :) I actually did several things at the advice of a child psychologist. The first was to buy all white underwear - seven pairs, one pair for each day of the week. Inside the waistband with a permanent black marker, write the day of the week. For each day that your son does not poop in his pants, he gets a reward. Create a reward boards with certain special treats or activities under each day of the week. Allow him to choose. Second, when he does have an accident, make sure he is helping in the cleaning of his underwear. Buy two sets of rubber gloves - one pair for you and one for him. He should take responsibility for his actions (even at this young age), but this needs to be done in a manner that is safe, does not make him feel embarrassed or ashamed and is not scary in any way. By you having a pair of gloves and helping him to clean his accidents up, you are showing your support. These tricks worked wonders for us! I highly recommend them. :)

Dealt with this for a year and it was freaking awful. My only consolation was that he wasn't school age at that point. He was 4.5 when it was all over with, but it was awful until then. He'd hold and hold and hold until he couldn't even feel it anymore. Hed leak diarrhea and not even know it and it was the most infuriating thing i swear. Finally the last time, it had been 11 days and we took him to the pediatrician. He was miserable but refused to poop. Of course he was backed up. So they gave me a cleansing regimen & I took an entire week off work to work with him, but it worked and he pooped for a week straight after that at least three times a day. I gave him a pull up with the butt cut out and told him it was his magic pull up that would let him go on the potty and keep him safe while he went. He tried it and lo and behold it "worked." By the end of the next week we had him sitting and going every morning or at least trying and once at night and we haven't looked back since..

Just wanted to say, been through it with my son too! You're not alone, as you can already tell, and I hear the frustration. At 3 yo, started potty training, and NEVER thought I would be at the same task for 4 more years!

However, it does get better. Way better. Hang in there. With the right diet, the right schedule, and the right pediatrician, you can overcome the poop!

At 5 yo, I decided I was out of the business of scrubbing underpants, and just bought new ones instead. After all, if you can afford diapers, you can afford underpants? Right??

Also, I believe my son was in 1st grade when I told him that his poop was his poop, not my problem anymore. Of course, I was gentle, but also firm. got a doctor's letter, copied it to the school, and told him, only he knew when he felt the urge. Not me, not my poop, his poop!! So, I got out of the "reminder" business, and let him have ownership of the issue. Best decision I ever made. Also, hardest thing I had to do. Just told him that there was plenty of clean underpants, home, school, etc. Bought the flushable wipes, plenty of hand soap (yes, he did once come home from school with poop on his hands, MAJOR freak out for me, but as you know, it washes off!!), and told him if they were dirty to just throw them out.

Once I got out of that business, things really improved. Only you know if you have a power struggle compounding your problem, but follow your instinct, check things out with your doc, and hang in there. Every kid is different, and you know your son best. Good luck. Remember, it will get better!!

I seriously could have wrote your post! I had the same problems with my 8 yr old daughter! She's been on Miralax for years and was having poopy accidents multiple times a day! I finally scheduled an appointment with a GI. The GI had me do a "clean-out" of 6 capfuls of Miralax in 2 liters of water. She was to drink this over a 2 day period (she finished it in a day though) and then every morning she is to drink water with 2 capfuls of Miralax. The GI warned me that she would have diahrea and she did, but she only had ONE accident the day of the clean out, and that has been 2 months now! The important thing is for the kid to drink the miralax-laced drink in the morning so it has a better chance of working. Hope you find something that works for your son!

Both of my sons have dealt with encopresis. My older son is now almost 20. He was almost 12 before we had an answer. I can't even tell you how many tears there were between the two of us.
I just didn't know why he kept doing this.

My youngest is 7. He only has an accident once a month at MOST.

It can get better, & it will. :)
