I am getting pretty tired of articles like this. Crazy strong words on the missile issue in North Korea: "Taken by surprise, the U.S. warned that a deal to resume stalled food aid to the North could be jeopardized if North Korea goes ahead." Gasp - North Korean food aid in jeopardy? How could they SAY that??
Newsflash: if the North Korean government wackos have the money to arm themselves, they have the cash to feed their country if they so choose. ESPECIALLY if they have the cash to pursue a nuclear program. It's like the welfare debate: if you are on welfare, but have the money to drive a fancy car and get an iPhone and a Coach purse, you shouldn't be getting welfare. Plus, it's not like North Korea is a frozen wasteland bereft of arable land. Ever heard of agriculture and producing your own food, you second-generation lunatic?
Easy solution, Capitol Hill - if NK pursues this, no aid. Easy-peasy. And that goes for every other country that takes our money with one hand while doing something shady with the other. I am tired of us handing out literally BILLIONS of dollars to folks who ignore the conditions. How about we use that cash to help AMERICANS who need aid?
Message to our government: if country X does not follow aid stipulations, don't send them any money or food. Yes, it sucks for the populace of country X, but it is not our job to make sure citizens of other countries are fed. It is a nice thing for us to do. This has been a problem for every presidency since WWII; as an American citizen, I don't give a rat's patootie for a national foreign policy that has us financially invested with zero return. Deficit much?
Sorry. I need to stop watching/reading the news.

I get the feeling you think people are getting smarter. They aren't. You are just going to be let down if you expect common sense and consequences ;-)"...and when her feet hit the floor in the morning the devil says "Oh, shit! She's awake!"

You know what is a kick in the guts?? Living in another country and hearing their opinions of America (and Americans). It SUX! In the US we think/feel we are helping and doing something nice for other countries. We are lending a hand, money, food, whatever when asked (or even when not asked lol), but people in other countries see it as America (and Americans) pushing ourselves and our western ways on others. That we must have our fingers in foreign governments so we can get what we want (oil, for one). They see the US as pushy, invading, backhanded ... It just sux!
Really, really frustrating when the US govt makes a decision that is unpopular and people in other countries see it as the American people, not just the government. Living in another country has really opened my eyes and it hasn't always been to see a bunch of roses. :(I love purple; I love cats. Imagine if cats were purple ... -
I hear ya, @aloneoverseas - we did 4 years in Germany and really had to work at first to get people to see us as just, well, PEOPLE. I got lambasted once on a street corner in Paris by two gendarmes who were very unhappy with President George W. Bush at the time. It doesn't help that wherever you are, you will always have that one idiot who is like, "A-MUR-KA! F YEAH! UP YOURS!" and doing stupid, rude shit that that pisses off the host nation folks. Ugh. We did end up making a lot of friends and getting somewhat past the barrier that is the American reputation overseas - ultimately, every human being everywhere just wants the same things out of life. That's what makes this even more frustrating.
And to clarify, it's not just us that has a screwed-up foreign policy. They all just fester in one giant, international policy dump.
