In 2008, 2-year-old Juliette Geurts was beaten to death at her home in Gering, Nebraska while in the care of her mother and her mother's two friends. Nobody has been arrested or held accountable for her death. Her aunt, Monica, continues to pursue justice. Please help her.

I'm wrong about the number of signatures. I didn't write it down and there have been no *public* signatures since I signed, but that's not the same thing at all. Also, I completely understand if people don't want to join Change.org. I do get notifications from them via email, but I probably opted in for them. There are a number of online petitions I do not sign because I don't want to sign up for *another* site. It's hard to keep track of how many darned memberships I have.

I guess reading about the petition is really depressing. None of my FB friends have shared it or claimed to sign it. Or even commented on it. I can't imagine how Juliette's aunt feels. Nobody wants to talk about this.

What a tragic story. Does anyone know if the mom still has the twin sister in her care?

I will verify this information shortly:

The twin sister is with the dad's parents. I think the dad is wrapping up another tour of duty. Last I knew the mom still has some visitation rights, but I'm not clear on what they are. Mom has since given birth to another child. She is not living in Nebraska.

Jaelyn lives with her paternal grandparents in Wisconsin while dad is on tour.

Her father is home from his third tour.

Charyse (mom) did have another baby, Arianna, and does not live in the same state as Jaelyn.

Charyse has visitation rights, but no custody.

A Scotts Bluff County District Court judge has indicated that a grand jury will be convened to examine the death of a two-year-old girl.

Scotts Bluff County District Court Judge Randall Lippstreu issues a release Wednesday that the grand jury will be convened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Juliette Serenity Guerts. Guerts died four years ago, on July 11, 2008, after suffering blunt force trauma to her head and abdomen.

Juliette’s aunt, Monica Hall, has led efforts over the last two years to bring more attention to the case, which remains unprosecuted as no arrests have been made. Her efforts spurred Scotts Bluff County citizens to lead a drive to bring the case to a grand jury by petition. On July 11, the anniversary of Juliette’s death, Hall and the circulators presented a petition with 1,770 signatures.

Hall said she is thrilled to hear the grand jury will be convened.

“I think that it is fantastic. We have waited for over four years for something, anything to be done,” she said. “No family should ever have to fight this hard to get justice for a murdered little girl.”

Lippstreu reminded the public in his release that grand jury proceedings are conducted in secret, as allowed by statute.

“Grand jurors take an oath which, in part, requires that they keep secret the work and discussions of the grand jury. Grand jurors must not discuss their investigation, deliberations or votes with anyone unless specifically instructed to do so by the judge. Persons should not contact grand jurors or the Court regarding the work of the grand jury.”

The statement did not include a possible date for proceedings. However, Scottsbluff attorney James Zimmerman has been appointed as special prosecutor. He will lead the work of the grand jury.

Hall had stated publicly that she hoped the judge would reach outside of Scotts Bluff County to appoint a special prosecutor.

“I am disappointed in that (the judge appointed a Scottsbluff attorney) because during the process to write the petition, I tried to contact attorneys throughout Scottsbluff,” she said. “Most had cited that they had worked with Doug Warner and felt there was too much of a conflict, too much influence. But, it is what it is – We are just thrilled that we are finally going to get a grand jury for Juliette.”

Hall said the family is praying that the grand jury will do its job well and is hoping for an indictment “to find out the truth.”

An investigation will be conducted, Lippstreu said, and the grand jury members will decide if charges should be filed in the case. If charges are filed, they will be filed in Scotts Bluff County District Court.

“It is a start,” Hall said, referring to the convening of the grand jury. “But, it is a small step toward a big step in hopefully getting ‘Justice for Juliette’.”

I don't understand why our children are treated like throwaways in this country.
It is so sad. I don't fully understand mothers born without the mothering instinct. I do, however, understand ppd, so no one bombard me with combative responses in regard to that, plse.
