Have you tried the little cakes that you add water to and put in the microwave? They're in the baking aisle and are so delish! Sounds like you need to take a family shopping trip to the supermarket!!! :)

Maybe my DS8 and I will walk the 2 miles to the store to go check that out @notsohotmomma!  We can turn it into a nature walk or something.....provided we don't get hit by one of the passing cars going too fast down our road!

@PhDMommy -- I haven't clicked over, but is that the 1-2-3 cake from Pinterest?!??!  LOVE that idea!  If DS and I do our nature walk to the store I'll have to get some angel food cake!

@MellowYellow -- And what exactly do you need for a pudding pie?

I'm not sure.  I haven't joined Pinterest because I know I'll get addicted.

Oh my! I can't imagine using that little pre-made boxes of preservatives!! Why not some fruit for desert? A blender and ice (water!) to make yummy smoothies. Bananas, strawberries, etc. You could even sneak in some veggies when they aren't looking!!

Why all this sugar and chemicals in our little ones bodies?

@notsohotmomma - I just can't do it! They get enough unhealthy snacks at school (birthdays and such!). Don't want to load them up with more sugar!!

Oh, oh! I have a recipe from my Nana and I swear it has to be straight out of the 50's!

    What you need:
1 jar maraschino cherries, no stems. (I use a big jar, cuz I love those suckers)
1 angel food cake (I buy one at the grocery store bakery, you can bake your own if you feel ambitious)
1 tub of REGULAR cool whip...the sugar free actually makes the dessert too sweet.

    What to do:
Drain cherries...I save some of the juice....cuz I love that shit. If you want more "area covered" you can cut the cherries in half.

Rip the cake into bite size chunks and put in a large mixing bowl.

Stir in cool whip. Stir in amount of your liking...I usually use most if not all of it.

Stir in cherries (cherry juice optional, but it adds more flavor and a lovely pink color).

Now- you can eat right then and there, but I think it's better if left over night in the fridge.

    And def refridgerate after making.

I don't know what the official name is but I call it Pink Mush, but a nicer name might be Cherry Delight...and a truthfulname would be Cherry Crack.

I'm as sexy as a burp mid-kiss. Watch out!

It is! Methinks I need to make it this week!

I made it for my Nana once...DH and I went for a motorcycle ride and decided we'd surprise her with a visit and her favorite desert. So we stopped at the grocery store bought everything for it, stuffed it into my messenger bag and went to her house. She was impressed I was able to carry it all while riding on the back of DH's bike.

Sorry for the irrelevant story....it's a beauty out today and nice days remind me of riding on the back of DH's bike. And the Cherry Crack obviously reminded me of my Nana. LOL

And I think Cherry crack is a cousin to the ambrosia recipe my Grandmother made....that was def a 1940-50's recipe. Full of sugar and happiness.

if you want to make rice crispy treats you can substitute marshmellow fluff for melted marshmellows or you can make fudge in the microwave the directions are on the back of the marmellow fluff container

Puddin pie: Graham cracker Pie crust plus pudding you've made (ingredients/instructions are on pretty much every box of Jello pudding) plus cool whip on top. Easy as pie!

@notsohotmamma those cookies sound great! My kids have food allergies, I prefer to use coconut oil over earth balance

@LesboMom that is what I normally buy. Try to avoid too much soy, its in everything. And you're right it just tastes weird. We are gf, df, and several other foods. I like coconut oil or crisco for baking. Sometimes I use half and half.

One of my family's favorites that my Grandma taught me.

    Glazed Fruit Salad:

1 can of cherry pie filling (blueberry or peach work also)
    1 can of fruit cocktail
    1-2 bananas (sliced)
    1 cup of mini marshmallows
    1/2 cup of coconut

Mix it all together and chill.

I also like to sprinkle a little granola on each individual serving.

Quick strawberry desert is what we call this dish, guess why :)
1.Cut strawberries in pieces and reserve.
2.In a bowl mix one cup of sour cream and half a cup of condensed milk (more or less depending on your sweet tooth)
    3. Add the strawberries in
Tataaaa...ready. Put in the refrigerator if it is hot outside because is better when cold.
No strawberries? It works with can or fresh pinaple too.

Such good ideas!! @livinthedream I would love to use better ingredients and not so much preservatives but it's sad when that stuff is actually cheaper :( now that farmers markets are coming around soon I should be able to use more fresh stuff but we go through it do fast dd won't eat can fruit of any kind which is good and bad in the dead of winter

@ashdawn684 - we are lucky that we can get excellent fruit and veggies year around. And canned fruit - yuck! So much sugar!! Not my kids.

    Microwave Custard

4 eggs, 3 cups milk, teaspoon vanilla (or more)
    1. whisk all together in a bowl or 2 qt measuring cup
    2. pour into 4 coffee cups, microwave 99 seconds to warm everything
    3. continue at 222 seconds until centers still look a little jiggley, continue until edges are firm
    4. (if you fill cups too full or cook too hot they will overflow)
    5. easy to lift out of microwave by cup handles
    6. sprinkle on Nutmeg or Cinnamon, refrigerate!
try with chocolate milk or coco... sooooo good you'll never have to buy dessert again!
