Has anyone else had an abcess on their butt or groin area? I had one on my butt right after DD was born and now I have another one right where my leg meets my groin. It has been there for a little while and it won't go away. Does anyone have any home remedy suggestions? Do I need to see a doctor?

Try making a paste of epsom salts and baking soda. Put it on the abscess and let it stay on over night then wash of the next morning.   The paste should draw it to a head or even draw it out so it will drain its self, you can keep the mixture in the fridge for a day or two.  both DH and i get cysts from ingrown hairs occasionally and this works,  Now if you start to spike  a fever  or it gets really swollen or hot then go to a DR and have them lance and drain it.   My first one ever was on my tailbone and I thought it was just a bruised tailbone and when it did finally open up the infection was so bad i almost got blood poisoning.  Good luck

I have never had an abscess but if the abscess is small (less than 1 cm or less than ½ inch across), applying warm compresses to the area for about 30 minutes, four times daily may help.

I found this on when to go to the doctor:
The sore is larger than 1 cm or ½ inch across.

The sore fails to heal or it continues to enlarge and becomes more painful.

The person has an underlying illness such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, sickle cell disease, or peripheral vascular disease.

The person is an IV drug abuser.

The person is on steroid therapy, chemotherapy, or dialysis.

The sore is located at the top of the buttock crease, or it is on or near the rectal or groin area.

The person has a fever of 100.4 F or higher.

There is a concern that there is foreign material within a wound or under the skin.
Go to a hospital's emergency department if any of these conditions occur with an abscess:

Fever of 102 F or higher, or vomiting, especially if the person has a chronic disease or is on steroids, chemotherapy, or dialysis

There is a spreading red streak on the skin originating from the abscess.

Any facial abscess larger than 1 cm or ½ inch across

MRSA can cause "abscess" like sores. I had it. It started on my butt. :\"> I let it go so long I had a 105 fever and had to be hospitalized for 5 days of IV antibiotics. If you were just in the hospital I'd check it out with a doctor. Embarrassing trust me I know.

Thanks ladies. No, I haven't been in the hospital. I think that it is probably brought on by ingrown hairs....I get terrible razor burn and itching everytime I shave. See what I get for trying to be "sexy"! I will try the hot compress and epsom salt and baking soda paste. I also think I will just let the hair grow from now on and DH will just have to deal with it! :) Thanks for all the suggestions!!

@runbitchrun, I did see the Veet thread. I actually posted on it, but failed to heed my own advice. I suggested on there to use this stuff called tendskin. It really works with the razor burn and the ingrowns, but it's not cheap and DH and I have been struggling financially so I haven't been able to buy it anymore. I am, however, going to check out Veet! Thanks!

My DD has one on her but, It looked like a zit one day and wham!!!! Ok it was still small looking but it was much deeper than it looked. She had a Staph infection, she had not been in the hospital though. She spent a week in the hospital wit iv medication. She was 2 years old at the time. I have had two myself.I believe she got it at daycare and once you get one it could come back at any time. I worked at the daycare too, so I either got it from her or someone else in the daycare. I also had to stay in the hospital. When she was in the hospital  there were at least 10 other kids with the same thing MSRA. They have been having some that are antiboitoic ( I can not spell) ressistant ( see I told you, lol) Mine was a hard bug to get, and the drugs were strong.

    GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!!!

Oh thank goodness I am not the only one who had an abscess in the butt area!!  My abscess got huge, size of a large lemon.  I had to go to the hospital and have it lanced. Dr said it had several pockets inside of it and had I waited, I would have become septic.  Take these seriously.  Better to get it taken care of b4 it gets ugly!!  The antibiotics they put me on were the reason I had to quit breastfeeding and that broke my heart.
