Does anyone have any ideas to help stop/slow this down? I will try just about anything. Thanks!

  • My friend found scalp-cooling to be effective, http://m.annonc.oxfordjournals.org/content/16/3/352.full. It is somewhat controversial in terms of whether it interferes with the chemo.

And big hugs to you @sara!!!! Kick some cancer ass!!!!

@chocoholic, @chaosmom, @Anonmom, I am sorry!!! I have mentioned in several other threads that I have Crohns disease and Diverticulitis. I don't want to mislead anyone to think I have cancer, I don't. The medicine I am taking now is 6MP, it is a chemotherapy med also used to treat leukimia and lymphoma. Thank you for your support but I wanted to clarify my situation. Cancer  fighters/survivors are amazing people that sincerely deserve all the support they can get.

Well, in that case KICK SOME CROHNS DISEASE/DIVERICULITIS ASS!!

I do not have any suggestions for keeping you hair.  I have heard the cold thing is supposed to work.  It didn't for my dad.  Hope you're able to figure something out though!  Maybe invest in some good wigs?

Thank you, ladies. The lady that cuts my hair told me to put frozen peas on my head. It won't stop it but it will slow it down. I am bad about taking super hot showers and I think that is a bad thing.

Yeah, probably cooling the showers down would be good. Is it an oral chemo or iv? I think I read that they were using the cooling packs during iv treatment. But I'm sure the same concept would work for oral. Not sure how long you need to keep it on there though :-/ hmmm

@chaosmom, its a pill. Maybe keep the cooling pack on for 10 minutes...I don't know. I wish there was a different med he could put me on.

i have lost my hair to chemo. It really does suck. But like they say, it will grow back. I suggest you check with your doctor before taking anything to stop hair loss. You don't want it to conflict with your meds. Number one is to get and stay healthy.  good luck

I've heard of ovation cell therapy but have been out of the chemo-loop for so long I'm not sure if it actually works.  Several of my friends (we were teens and vain about our hair) tried the cooling caps but with very little results, but we were all on more than just 6MP (which is enough, if you ask me), so that might have had something to do with it.

I used Nioxin when I was losing hair to do cancer drugs.  It helped keep my hair, but you have to keep using it until you're off meds.  and ween off slowly.  otherwise you'll lose all the hair you worked so hard to keep.  http://www.hairlossspecialists.com/top-5-hair-loss-shampoos.cfm

I have a med that causes hair loss... I've been on it about 3 months now... It seems to have slowed down :)

Is there something else that you could try?

    (((hugs)))

I also take 6MP and a remicaide iv for my ulcerative colitis. Unfortunately, if you are getting gpod results regarding your health, I think it will be a pretty long term medication. I am also experiencing hair loss and trying to prevent and reverse it. I am going to try ovation cell therapy advanced system for about three months pretty soon. It claims to stimulate growth of hair follicles in the dormant state, but will not work of they are dead, and to strengthen hair to prevent breakage. I don't know if it will help, it is kind of pricey (about $100 for the system - 3 12oz bottles/ about three months supply according to the website). They have a 365 day 100% money back guarantee, so I figure it is worth a try. Good luck to you, and I hope you find something that works for you. I will try to remember to keep you posted with my results.

@Katie_g, I have started taken Biotin again and I am just very careful brushing it and washing it. I am almost tempted to find another type of treatment. This one doesn't seem to be working all that great. Plus, I don't want to be on chemo meds forever. Good luck with the ovation cell therapy, keep me updated and let me know if it works. I read up on your condition just now... I am sorry! I know what you are going through and it really freakin sucks donkey dick. I am here if you want to talk.

It does indeed suck, and I was having not so great results with the 6mp alone, so my doctor added remicaide. I have heard that humera (or something like that) or remicaide is also used to treat crohns (my doctor is not sure if it is crohns or colitis, I've had ulcers in my small intestine, but luckily have not had any fistulas, so they are leaving the diagnosis as UC). If what your taking isn't helping definitely find something else. Everyone is different, but after my first remicaide treatment I noticed a HUGE improvement after about 1 week. I don't think anyone wants to be on chemo meds forever, but this combination therapy really seemed to do the trick for me so I think I will stick with it for a while. How well does the biotin seem to help? I have been a bit avoidant of trying more pills, so I opted to try a topical treatment first. I am especially concerned about how well it will work while I am still having to take the medications that cause it. Thanks for your support.

Went through chemo and it was just easier to shave because it came out in huge clumps. But some friends just brushed it out good and didn't lose it all, but then it looked long and straggly. So maybe cut it chin lenght with layers so it looks fuller? It might not all fall outm

@Tattooed_SM, I don't have cancer, I have Crohns but it is the same chemo meds for both treatments. I am not losing to the extent of Mohawk status just yet but Goddess forbid, if it ever came to that....maybe.
