Could our kids be penpals?

    Morning! (Afternoon?)

To jump straight in - When I was in about 9,  I had an asian penpal through school. We stopped talking after a few years but I've been thinking lately about how my DS7 would probably love the idea (his school doesn't have a penpal program). He kind of needs a purpose when he writes, and he's really interested in other countries and cultures. And he's sad he never gets mail lol I've looked online but I'm a bit irked by all the sites.

So I got to thinking, we Scary Mummies are from all around the world, and maybe our kids could connect through us? I think it'd be really cool, it would get our kids writing, they'd be open to the world - I know my son would love it :D

    What do you think ladies?

Aww so happy to have quick responses :D The idea's been rolling around my head for a while now. I live in Australia, postage doesn't worry me personally, but I totally understand if that makes this all a bit too awkward for some.

I love that it's a really sneaky way to get kids writing. We could probably email but letters are a bit more personal.

Info would definitely have to be exchanged via private pm's. Any idea how we could work it all? Do we just pick a kid lol I have no idea past this point!

    So, whats the plan from here???? @jessiesmom @bakingmommy @LesboMom @SchweddyBalls @Deviltwinsmomma @MyInnerGoddess @toyoungtofeelold @many_moons_ago @silentscreamer

I don't know...does someone want to take the time to organize this? I will...but I am non-stop busy until next week. Probably we should start a pm with the general info about our child who would like to participate. Then we can either go through and pick a match ourselves, or someone can be in charge of matching. What do you think ladies? Any other ideas? My daughter is already asking me who her pen pal will be!

I can do the organising. Maybe a loose matching system will work better then just picking, that way no kids miss out? There's quite a few 9yr old girls so far :) So how fussy is everyone? Like with boy/girl pairing, ages being the same? etc

I was just thinking the same thing @LA_Pygmyherder.  I have a little guy that is 6...his writing is fabulous, but I think he would be more interested in drawing, though he does like to write.  His whole world revolves around Super Mario tho, lol....mostly.

I believe @Lesbomom is going to do the spreadsheet?  I will pm you then :)

Btw, I think the timing of this is awesome.  Kids need to stay in practice with their writing over the summer.  Thank you for this idea @Dovahkiin..this is fabulous!

I think drawings will work as well, especially for the younger ones. And who knows, give it a while and they might start writing too :)

@Dovahkiin (or someone else) could we just pm you with our kids names/gender and ages and you pair them them as best as possible then pm us with the other mums username and we can pm them for details.

    Did that even make sense?

I would do it but expecting baby anyday now.

If anyone wants to PM their kids info, I can start getting it all together and then maybe @Lesbomom could help with her spreadsheet awesomeness when she's back online? And yes @many_moons_ago that makes sense :)

You know...this could be ...not just great for the kids, but very informative for us parents too.  My oldest daughter had a penpal from the ages of about 10 til she was 14.  Granted, at first, I never really paid much attention to their interactions, as she would tell me things here and there that they would talk about.  After a while, she stopped mentioning it altogether and after a couple years, I kinda got curious about her.  There were just some things that I had a "feeling" about.  Well, I went and checked up on some of the correspondence.  There was never anything along the lines of confessions per se, but she and her penpal were very "in-the-know" about things that I never knew existed, or that I didn't find out about til I was a few years older.  Not that I wanna give anyone anything to be apprehensive about, but it is an interesting way to find out about your kids sometimes.

I also have a good friend that married her lifelong penpal.  They had written to each other for almost 13 years without ever having met.  Yes, they sent pics back and forth and things like that, but it's neat to see that they have been married for 17 years and are still like newlyweds...truly soulmates.

COUNT ME IN!!!  My son is 9.  I'd love to have a sneaky way to get him to write...and he LOVES receiving mail.  He wouldn't mind a boy or girl.  Closer to his age the better.  Gets along really well with older kids.

I'll PM @LesboMom with my information...unless there's a PM with everyone in it already.  Let me know!
