    Hello lovelies...

Slightly more back on track today here at school...and in my crazy coffee filled brains.

So, I want to pick your brains about a topic that I find very, very interesting: Censorship!!!!

The First Amendment clearly has some interesting things about freedom of speech, but more and more we see the issue of censorship coming up in terms of Janet Jackson's nipple, in schools where there are no uniforms/dress codes, the way a student wears their hair or a dress for a school picture, defamation lawsuits etc. etc. etc....the issue of censorship is EVERYWHERE...

Therefore, my question to you all is:

When, if ever, is censorship acceptable or appropriate, and when does it cross the line into limiting personal freedom!!?!??

i think if its not hurting anyone it shouldn't be censored, except at schools, if ur under 18 u don't really get a say. ur still a minor, ur parents and teachers still control what ur exposed to.

    For you @chocoholic

I think there are certain times and places for what most people would call censorship. I think asking someone to be considerate in how they phrase something is not censorship. I agree with @shadylane in that there is definitely a need for some censorship in schools. Any of the -isms (sexism, racism, chauvinism) should be eliminated from the schools. Our children are well aware that these things exist, the ideas and behaviors do not need to be enforced at the school level.

I agree with censorship, but at a personal level. Do I want the FCC telling me what I can and can't see on TV? No. But I will draw that line in my home for my children. What's good for one isn't always good for all. Where children are concerned, though, I am all for assuring that they aren't surrounded by indecency of any kind. They grow up too fast as it is.

"The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic. [...] The question in every case is whether the words used are used in such circumstances and are of such a nature as to create a clear and present danger that they will bring about the substantive evils that Congress has a right to prevent." Schenck vs The United States 1919

This is definitely one of my sore spots, so I may rant a little. I do think there's a time and a place for censorship, but that's more on a military and legal basis. Classified documents, and documents released in the legal system where some on could get hurt over cooperation with the system should be redacted to protect people and certain information. But in society I think it hinders progress, if free information does not flow, the free train of thought stops at the next station. I don't believe certain things like porn should be on Tv because children would have unhindered access to it, and if you choose to look at it, you can do it in the privacy of your own bed room.
Certain things shouldn't be covered by Freedom Of Speech, like I posted above causing panic shouldnt be covered, threats of bodily harm, and messages that endorse bodily harm shouldn't be as well. The Oklahoma city bomber got his Ideas from the book the Turner Diaries, so should books be banned? Not all, individuals will use any piece of media for their cause no matter kind, loving, or sick and twisted in purpose they use it for. As much as I hate the Westboro Baptist Church, and all they stand for they have rights as well. They have the right for general assembly and free speech just like the rest of us, but using it to outrage and protest the funerals of fallen armed service members is morally wrong in my book. But if we didn't allow it happen, it would be hypocritical. Yes I'd like to punch Fred Phelps right his face, but I would never act on it.

Should the FCC ban cursing outright? I think George Carlin said it best with his List Of Seven Dirty Words, I don't think they should. If you don't want your che exposed to something said on Tv you can manage it, you can opt out of certain channels or restrict access to them. Dw keeps a tight ship on our Tv so Dd doesnt have access to materials that cause bad influences.... Sorry I'm done ranting. It my point is information needs to flow unhindered so people can get all sides of the story, certain things shouldnt fall into the protection of freedom of speech, and parents need to control their children better if they don't want certain things seen or heard by them.

I'm with @FoulMouthedSailor:  censorship is the beginning of the end.  there was a line on the first episode of West Wing that said it best:  "If our children can buy pornography on any street corner for $5, isn't that too high a price to pay for Free Speech?"  The President responds, "no, but $5 is too high a price for pornography."

I think it's up to us as parents to censor that to which our children are exposed, not the government.

I'm on the fence on this one. If you're paying for it, I think there should be no censorship- like with rating on movies, you choose the level you want and pay for it. TV used to be separated by broadcast being cleaner and cable having shows with more language and sex, like Sex and the City- which I loved. But... like when my mother is around, I really don't want that on the boobtube. And with the radio, I don't like my DS humming along to songs with explicit lyrics. I wish the stations had ratings too.

At work I have to do a lot of searches for licensed images via companies that sell images. If I'm looking for a hot woman to be in an ad, I might get 400 images in my search and 50 of them are pornography. Honestly, some of the image banks don't have a "no nudity" search parameter and I really don't want to have to look at pornography at work to get to the images I need. That is some censoring I would like.

But I'm also an artist, and I get super pissed when fine artists take flack from the govt because they received grant money and did something offensive, cutting-edge or the like. There was a time when pastel colors were garish and unseemly. Imagine if Monet or Cezanne had been censored.

@shate98:  I don't think a filter on a computer search would be considered censorship.  You SHOULD be able to do a search for something with a parameter such as "no nudity."  I see nothing wrong with that.

And I agree there should be "ratings" for music like movies.  I'm not going to listen to all the crap dd will listen to myself to know if it's acceptable or not because half that crap give me a migraine.
