So my momma runs a gluten free bakery and eats gluten free and has a rockin bod, and I read somewhere today that both Kim K & Miley Cyrus attribute their figures and feeling great to gluten free eating. Im thinking about giving it a try, so im looking for experience. My mom has been urging me to do it because she thinks it will help my stomach problems. Any one done it before for reasons beside an allergy? Did you notice a big difference?

Gluten free is one of those things that ppl hype up because its sooo "positive" and such a "good way to live". Speaking from experience, if you don't have to do it, don't. It can be difficult to find the foods, and if you're used to 'normal' foods Gluten free doesn't come close in taste most times.

@turthipo my momma recommended it to me because i have really bad irritible bowel syndrome and she thinks it will help with that so im not just trying to buy into a fad, but if it will help with that AND make me feel better otherwise then I thought it might be worth the extra effort.  I do eat a lot of what she makes, such as the breads and pizza dough and muffins cookies ETC and it's not as good but I kinda like it

@momnipotent - Look into the FODMAP diet - its the bomb for IBS!!  I know have I have IBS and Crohn's.

The basic theory is that it is the amount and types of sugars eaten that gas the gas, bloating and diarhea.  So by limiting the amount and types of sugars you consume, then you guts don't ferment those sugars and you greatly reduce symptoms.

Not all who have IBS have to give up wheat - although it does help some people.

I have eliminated onions(one of the worst food for IBS), garlic and several kinds of fruit(apples) and veggies(cabbage) and all legumes(hummus, kidney beans) and am having a much better time of it.

we are mostly primal in our house.  which is dairy/grain/sugar/processed food free.  I'd say just stay away from processed things in general.

I have drastically reduced my gluten intake because of tummy issues, I tested negative for celiac but eliminating a lot of it has really helped.  What I need to do is start following the diet that @canadamom is talking about but so many of my favourites are on it!  She's right though, when I don't eat that stuff, I do feel better.  A completely gluten free diet is tricky (and pricey) so unless you're allergic, I'd try the fodmap diet first.  It works, I just have no discipline.  (and my tummy and ass pay the price)

I am Gluten Free since 2004, when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. And I hate it! I have put on so much weight, I feel so isolated because no one I know has this issue. I can never eat the same foods as my family. Plus, my groceries r so expensive! It really sucks, so if u don't have to, don't do it.

It is very hard to avoid some of the foods on the FODMAP diet - fucking onions are in EVERYTHING - soup, broths, anything boxed or made in store,  - its crazy!!!

And I love hummus, beans, cabbage, apples(OMG no apple pie ever!!) All my favorite fruits are on the NO list - peaches, nectarines - anything with a pit

But I have been in sooooo much pain for the last 3 years, that I would gladly give up anything to live pain free.  I even flirted with anorexia for awhile because I got afraid to eat as it caused so much pain.

I'm primal, I don't eat any processed food or grains at all. If you're interested in going gluten free, there's a really good book called Wheat Belly. I have no stomach problems at all any more, I swear to god I don't remember the last time I farted, LOL. I was vegetarian for 15 years and I was pretty much jet-propelled... I'm new here - is there a way to pm people? Let me know I have a lot of good links I could suggest.

My mom and sister are both gf. Neither has celiac, but they both have really severe gluten sensitivity. Especially my mom, who can accidentally ingest a teeny tiny bit of wheat and be sick for days. It's definitely a much more expensive way of eating, IF you buy a lot of gf baked goods and pastas and stuff. If you bake youth own, or stick to meats, fruits/veggies, legumes then it's not as bad.
@primalmomma @bluebird555 what exactly is the primal diet?

Primal or paleo is just trying to eat the way we evolved to eat, before agriculture started. Because there is so much contraversy over what this was actually like, I stick to the JERF diet - just eat real food. I don't eat any grains, processed food, processed vegetable oils, or sugar. It's working for me, I've managed to keep of a 70 lb weight loss for three years eating as much as I want (I got obese on a low fat, low cal vegetarian diet), and I never get sick.I no longer have spikes in my blood sugars, can go hours without feeling hungry (I used to be chronically hungry and nautious), and just feel good overall. But like I said, it works for me, not everyone's cup of tea.

I have been gluten free because of stomach issues for about a year now. I did lose about 5 pounds from it pretty easily and without trying. Unless you have actual digestive issues I don't think a gluten free diet is necessary if it is just for weight loss. If you choose whole grains and skip on any processed foods you will be better off.
If you really want to be healthy and lose weight without much effort then go to a fully plant-based diet. I eat this way and I feel great.
Gluten free has definitely helped my digestive issues though! Now that I have dropped animal products (did this about 4 months ago) my stomach and skin is even better. Way less bloating!
