Today's Canada Day in the Great White North (or as I call it right now, the Great stinking hot, feels like a desert, how the hell is this Canada North). Happy Canada Day Canucks! How do you guys celebrate the holidays (Canada Day/Independence Day)? Do these holidays invoke a sense of national pride, or are they just another excuse to drink and shoot off fireworks? And from another discussion; should these holidays be secularized and pushed to the weekend in order to accomodate the working week?
-
We don't particularly celebrate the smaller holidays like Independence Day and such. We celebrate the bigger ones like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Halloween, Easter, but not so much the others. It's not that we're not proud or anything like that either we just don't really get into it. The fireworks are more annoying than anything because they start after Draven's bedtime. lol. But I'm sure when she's older and doesn't freak out we might be able to enjoy them. @canadianmama Have a good day, eh?

We take Rylee to fireworks every year. Tonight we're going for a picnic in the park, and then off to see fireworks. We LOVE Canada Day. It's one of the only holidays I really get into. Usually I even have a special Canada Day outfit, I dropped the ball this year.I strongly disagree with moving holidays to be convenient to the working week. I think it takes everything special out of it!Happy Canada Day guys!! @thefinder @demanda @mommydelirious @momnipotent @pallasathene @french_mom @fatchickonabike @scotiamama @Katescrazymom @Curious @freedomlover @Grainne @weezer @dreamer @madme @missmama_5 @eapple @tranquil @amyclark @mouse @456Imamom @notperfect @iamslowlygoingcrazy @jennylynn83 @NorthernMommy @ canadamom and all other Canadian Mom's I forgot (there are a LOT of us now!)

Yeah, they are annoying now to me too. I like that the big events are on the weekend because then I can celebrate the 4th with my family doing small fireworks and still take Bubby to see the big ones later. It's about spending time with family to me, not so much about national pride.

Thanks @canadianmama :) we have a big bbq planned with all our friends and lots of kids! I'm very excited. Love seeing everyone! We will definitely be going to the fireworks tonight too... Drag the kids along to enjoy as well. Happy Canada day everyone!!!

Totally @autumn I'm sure when she's older we will be able to do the fun stuff but right now it's just more stress than it's worth.
-

Happy birthday, hosers!

Well I'll take any and every excuse to have a little celebration!
I'm a New Zealander who's been living in Canada for about 4 years and both my kids are born Canadians and I'm extremely proud of their dual Canadian/New Zealand citizenship.
So we'll see the fireworks tonight and tell the kids how extremely lucky they are to be born connected to two wonderful, peaceful countries!
Happy Canada Day!!!
And no I don;t think the holiday should be secularized, I agree with CanadianMama lets keep it special!

Happy Canada Day to our friendly neighbors to the north !!
On 4 th of July we normally have BBQ and go to a carnavil at the local Catholic church. ( odd since we are not Catholic ) then Thunder on the Mountain. The local fireworks show , then home fighting traffic to sit in the house away from windows ad the locals like to shoot their guns off ( into the air) all night. Oh and me and H always have a fight and both kids have meltdowns at diffrent times ( sometimes multiple times during the day) and sometimes at the same time. And it's hot ! Can you tell it's not my favorite. This year I'm going out of town. Yea it will still be hot but I won't have H to deal with , lol." Wibbly wobbly timey wimey ......." The Doctor

Thanks @canadianmama! And Happy Canada Day everyone!
So, I'm pretty patriotic so Canada Day means a lot to me. We were supposed to go to the Pow Wow breakfast this morning but, ahem, I was a little drunk last night and slept in hard today. But later we'll go down to the park and participate in some activities I'm sure, even though this city is kind of lame and it's all sort of cheesy.
I live a less than 10 min walk from the park where eeverythings going on - so we usually spend Canada Day going back and forth a few times. Later, I'll be having a bbq and some people over and then we'll all walk down to the fireworks.
I agree that I don't like when they change the day to accomodate the work week. That's one thing I do like about my city, the fireworks are always July 1 no matter the day. Nice that it's a Sunday this year.
And yeah, I have a Canada Day outfit because I'm cool like that. -
Happy Canada day!! thx @canadianmama c;
we LOVE fireworks and they do a pretty big show over the falls almost every weekend. I'm sure tonights will be a bit more special. I can't tell you how much I appreciate being a Canadian and this year even more so after travelling. It's not that the people weren't great elsewhere it's just that I love me some Canadian!

We had fireworks last night. We just had to go behind the apartment building to see..wasn't a perfect view (especially of those shorter ones they set off nowdays) but we got to leave the baby in bed (who can sleep through that?? They are just down the road!) The fireworks are sorta special to us cause the first time Brian and I hung out it was at the Canada Day fireworks...and we started dating after that. Ok enough cheese....
ETA: I forgot to add that the parade is this afternoon. Now this is a parade in a village of less than a 1000. Sooooo it'll be a couple 18 wheelers and some cars with flags on them and shit...maaaybe a few flatbed floats...someone might throw some candy at kids. but its something, my mom and grandma are coming down and we'll set up some chairs since it goes right in front of the building. Anyways, thats the plan!
Happy Canada Day! From.....

Happy Birthday Canada! I am a proud Canadian for sure! We will likely spend the afternoon at the celebration downtown, they have games and stuff for the kids. I don't know if we will make the fireworks though, they don't start until 10pm and it may be too late if we are spending the afternoon out. I hope you all have a lovely day with your families, and a great long weekend, woohoo!
-
Happy Canada Day peoples!!! Woo woo!We cleaned the house then went to the park. Lol. If the clouds and wind stayed away, we could go to the beach. Other than that, there's not much going on since our 'rodeo' is in two more weeks and that's when we go all out with the fireworks and street fair and so forth.See ya in another life, sister!

Wow, didnt realize there were some many Canadian SM's. Happy Canada day to my southern neighbors.( I think Michigan is the only place that can say that). We usually watch fireworks somewhere and have a bbq. I would love it if all holidays fell attached to a weekend. It sucks having to get up for work bright and early the day after a holiday.Stay away from my chocolate and nobody gets hurt!
I think I like who I am becoming... -
Yeah Canada day goes unoticed in my household. Since July first is my baby bro bd and the 3rd is Daddy's So since the first is always work off. We celebrate then. :)And nice pic @FoulMouthedSailor loved the simily french there :PIt is for me to know and you to dot dot dot.

I don't think I'm super patriotic, but I love to celebrate Canada Day. School's out, summer has started (although we've had summer for a while this year)! We live in a great country.
The town I went to high school in has a big waterfront festival this weekend, lots of big boats from across the lake come to the harbour. We'll go to fireworks if the kids look like they might stay up. Dd has loved them since she was less then a year old, she called them fire stars.
Her first Victoria day, I was nursing her when our idiot neighbours set off fireworks in the street outside her window. I almost lost a nipple. We live in a freaking subdivision, that should be illegal. They'd parked cars to block the street and everything. One of them is a cop, so it's totally okay, right?!?
And changing the day we celebrate a holiday is not cool. If Canada became a country on July 1st, we should celebrate that day. Same for the other holidays.
<:-P

Happy Canada Day!!!
We were @ the fair all day fri & sat, parade today then bbq @ my parents, then the beach. I am burnt to a crisp and it is hot as the hinges of hell here on the east coast.
The holiday being on monday worked out for me this year because I was able to get today off and have to work tomorrow, usually I haveto work and miss the parade and all the fun stuff -
Happy belated Canada day to all of you! We had a pretty quiet Canada day, as DS has a wonderful summer cold and fur baby 2 developed kennel cough! However, got the parade in! But, as we are this far north - no fireworks due to too much daylight! I miss fireworks on canada day!
