Sixteen years ago today, Jeff and I went on our first date. Last night, he posted a picture of us on Facebook, a few months later over Thanksgiving break. He wrote that it his hope for our kids is that they fall as deeply in love as the two of us did. It was very sweet and I couldn’t agree more.

But.

I feel like I need to address my bedroom, since it really just can’t be ignored.

I mean, have you ever seen anything quite like it?

I know.

1. Yes, those are fish floating around on my walls. But, not just any fish. Fish that I hand drew on plain white wallpaper and cut out and arranged one by one on the walls. Because you just couldn’t find a decent fish border, dammit.

2. After all, there might have been some confusion about exactly whose room this was.

3. Random teddy bear whom I had no attachment to.

4. Yes, those are mini liquor bottles lining every framed print I had in my room. No, I wasn’t an alchoholic.

5. Sombreros!

6. The Broadway musical, Anything Goes. Have I mentioned how cool I was in high school?

7. Rosie the Riveter. I am such a feminist!

8. That’s another sombrero, for a total of three. In case the Three Amigos stopped by.

9. Hot guy ripped out from a magazine. (Why did we stop doing that again?)

10. A mock magazine I created in high school. Oddly consistent with what I do now.

11. Teddy bear sheets. To contrast the liquor and hot guy.

12. Awwww, Jeff’s hair!

13. Jeff used to find it adorable that I would trip constantly. And, I did. Like, all the time. I realize now that it had nothing to do with clumsiness or lack of balance, I just couldn’t walk in those chunky shoes.

14. Yes, I’m Jewish. Yes, that’s a nun. I have no idea why.

15. The Gargoyles of Washington University. Otherwise known as: What nightmares are made of.

Oy.

And, now,  a picture of Jeff in his room. This is the picture I excitedly sent home to my parents. They couldn’t wait to meet him.

I think I can safely say that our decorating skills have strengthened.

As have we.

I can’t even get an idea of the kind of person you are through this room. It kinda has me confused and shaking my head a little bit. Who ARE you? Is this a theme? Is this what was in your head? oh man! This is probably one of the BEST posts/post ideas EVER. I may have to completely ri you off one day. But you can’t hate me if I do, because it would be a testament to your genius! lol I have to say though…..
I noticed your wording, “I WASN’T an alchoholic!” ;) lol I do like the fake magazine comment too!

LOL! My grandma gave me those teddy bear flannel sheets when I was ten! I still have the top sheet and use it for camping!

Why did we stop taking pictures of men out of magazines. I, at one point, actually had pictures of New Kids on the Block suspended from my ceiling. What more could a guy want in a girl?

Man I wish my room would have been that cool. But alas, I lived with my Grandparents who forbade me to put thumb tacks in their walls and I had to campaign to hang up 3 posters. My room may have been mine, but the HOUSE belonged to them and they had their OWN decorating ideas. *sigh* I am envious.

I still want to cut hot guys out of magazines and purses & shoes, in that order. I wonder if John would let me put them up in our bedroom. This was college right? I had lots of quotes and sunflowers around me in college…at home in high school it was, well…. Quotes and Andy Gibb. ;)

Now I’m totally sad that I never thought to take any pictures of my room. Not even the entirely red, white, and blue one. Bummer – who’d have thought I’d have a blog to post those pictures on 35 years later?

Interestingly enough, the one thing no one has commented on – WHY was your hand right, um, there? That’s pretty cozy for that age….

My 9 year old has started drawing what she wants her own room to look like someday – instead of spending so much time creating this I think I will just show her your picture as inspiration..but of course we will work in the cannabis somewhere too. Love it!

omg, how freakin’ cute are the two of you?? I totally loved getting this peak at “Jill, the early years.” And if I lived in your dorm I would have thought your room was totally awesome. ;-)

I absolutely love this. The numbered exhibits make it so enjoyable! I especially love the random hot guy from the magazine and the nun picture. I think that nun is wearing sunscreen. The hot guys makes me think of all the Teen Bop magazines I had with Kirk Cameron pictures. This whole entry also makes me so nostalgic. I want to dig through my old photo albums and pull out pictures of my room where I had a mural lining the walls displaying a NYC street scene that I painted/drew. I was a really cool twelve-year-old. I also had stolen hood ornaments nailed to my bright red walls, because I was awesome.

Damn Jill, if you had dark hair and blue eyes you could be my little sister. Are you sure that you two don’t know each other. That room is eerily familiar, although she is much older than you are (40) so there is probably no relationship there.

BTW, my little sister doesn’t read your blog but if she should happen to stumble onto this post I need to remind her of her age because a good big brother never misses a chance to tease his sisters. It is the law.

Great picture, Jill. It looks like my room when I was in high school only all my posters were of Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne.

I LOVE Jeff’s room picture. Honestly, it just made me laugh! When, exactly, did people stop decorating their beds with teddy bears? I don’t remember? I also, now, have a sudden fear of what my daughter’s room will look like in a few more years. I’m worried I won’t be able to let go of my decorating fetish enough to let her destroy (ahem) decorate it with her own cut out fish equivelant.

the happiness that I have that I DO NOT own a scanner is just reserved for times like these. Although, when I do get one, I’m sure I’ll post some horrible photos, just for the reaction. So fun–we also ripped photos of hot guys up and put them on our walls. Why? Who knows. Why not?

Too funny… my room actually looked quite similar to this… except for that I shared my room with my younger sister, and we both had different decorating tastes… (Me= boy bands. EVERYWHERE). (Her= Cats. EVERYWHERE). It was quite the… room.

Oh my gosh Jill! I think i had those EXACT hand pictures on my cinder brick walls at college. Oh yes I did. And I also DEFINITELY had letters cut out proclaiming it was BECKY’s room. Lest anyone forget : )

1994-1998 I was rocking out the halls of Baptist Bible College. I was a Baptist (and still am) but proudly displayed Mother Theresa pictures on my wall. I didn’t have teddy bears but I did have a stuffed monkey. I was wacky for sure… : )

And is hot guy #9 carrying a baby? Ha. I have nothing witty to say about that.

I had to make my own fish border as well. I painted my fish on styrofoam and cutting them out was a Be-yatch! My mom had my room completely undone 2 weeks after I left for school. The coolest thing was the giant Little Mermaid with glow in the dark paint on her tail. That should have been my parent’s clue I wasn’t ready for college. lol.
