My Mother Went To The Market…

You know that old memory game? The one where each player adds an item to the end of the list, but first has to recite every one mentioned before?

Well, I have a big beef with it. If a person remembers every damn item on the imaginary shopping list, shouldn’t they be deemed successful in the game? A winner? Why does it matter what order said person remembers the list? Don’t we all do our shopping in different ways? Personally, I like to group my shopping lists into categories. It’s time effective and smart. Getting penalized in a juvenile game for being a savvy shopper just doesn’t seem fair.

Am I wrong here? Because I demand a recount in last night’s game.

Speaking of lists, Lily is all about them these days and it’s adorable. Birthday wish lists, lists of her friends, her toys… Anything and everything. The only challenge? Understanding what on earth she’s talking about.

I agree with you, the list should not have to be in the correct order, it is getting all of the items which is important. When doing the grocery shopping, my husband always seems to forget one important item on the list…and I usually can guess which item it will be when I give him the list.

Yes! My husband did all of the grocery shopping during the blizzard. He got an A for effort, but we had some… interesting meals that week.

My dad did all the grocery shopping growing up. So THAT meant that my Mom was always bitching that she had NOTHING to go with ANYTHING. Talk about some interesting meals. Let’s just say that applesauce was generally a side dish. And she could rock some tuna in shells (even though it made me puke everyone else seemed to enjoy it)!

Grocery Store

Go Gurts
Applesauce
Blueberries Bar

Bagels

I used to work with elementary school kids. The best was when one kid wrote in her journal that her brother got one of those oversize chocolate coins in his Christmas stocking. It read, “Mi brodur got a big pen*s.”

Lists already! Such a woman at heart.

Personally I do my lists by areas in the grocery story…that way I don’t have to go back to the far end when I’ve reached the other end (if you understand my meaning :-) . My goal: Get in, get out, as quickly as possible, and don’t cross my path if I get home and find I forgot something off the list.

I think those last two are “bagel” and “chicken” :-)

I do my shopping list in categories too: produce, mea & fish, dairy, etc. It’s so much faster and easier to get everything without going through it several times to make sure you didn’t forget anything.

Oh, and the game? you can totally say the stuff out of order. Unless you do it with the alphabet, you know, she got Apples, Bananas, Carrots, etc

I would be interested to see what Reilly would put on a list. Last night I made a treat of blueberries and fresh cut strawberries. He ate them all and then said he needed a treat. That a treat was, “something that was not good for you.” I am guessing his list would be full of the not good for you treats.

Hey, as the main grocery shopper in this family, I like to remember my items in the order in which I will find them in the store I’m going to, so I can get in and out faster. So, I say it does not matter if you have them in the order the others want, what only counts is the order that you’d buy them in if you were the actual shopper. Mommy brains are wired differently than game designers brains are, really. So therefore, you are declared a winner in my book, because you got those items remembered even if they weren’t in someone else’s listing method.
