I spent yesterday in NYC, snooping on the shooting of the Target “Look Book” for fall. When they asked me if I knew what all the terminology they were throwing around meant, I was all, sure, of course, I do! (As I scanned scenes from The Devil Wears Prada in my head.) In case you haven’t memorized the movie, The Look Book goes to magazine editors to help plan their upcoming stories. Everything is shot on clean white and meant to purely showcase the clothes.
It was really cool to be able to see what’s coming up for fall. Cozy sweaters and jeans and boots are my favorite and there is some good stuff coming. I also got to chat with the stylist and hair and makeup artist and snag some valuable tips. Here are some goodies I learned:
1. Eyelash curlers really work. They have always scared me because they look like torture devises and I’m terrified of tearing all of my lases out by mistake, but I couldn’t believe the difference. I am so buying one this weekend.
2. There is more than one way to wear a scarf. Good to know, since I have about 20 hanging in my closet. This has some good suggestions.
3. Pretty much anyone can wear some sort of red lipstick. I’m testing this one out.
4. Fashion rules are dead. Gone are the days of not wearing white after Labor Day. Dress for the weather, not the rules.
5. Always pack back-up shoes. I mean, I knew that one, but it was confirmed.
As far as the outfit, I love this dress– I think the neck detail is so pretty and it held up great on the train back and forth. I would absolutely buy this one. The shoes, however, I am cursing. I wasn’t at 9AM, but come 5PM, I was not happy with them. I would be glad not to see them back in the rotation. Wanna help out with that?

Let’s play “Where’s Jill!”
My Target girls, Jessica from Merona and Mary Anne from AKQA . I love them.
Me & Minnie Mouse. She asked for a donation, to which I asked, what’s the cause? Her answer: Me. I love an honest Minnie.

Yay! And yes to eyelash curlers. But if you let those things sit around in a drawer for, say, the five year period during which you have small children, and then you try to use them again–the rubber will be all dried out and then might actually rip out all your eyelashes.
Your trip to NYC looks like so much fun!

OUCH. My eyelashes hurt just reading that.
Eyelash curlers do work and make your eyes pop.
The dress was pretty but yea when wearing heels always have a pair of flats handy.
You looked fabulous and I am jealous that you got to see the new fall line. Fun.
It was fun– there’s some really cute stuff!
that dress was made for you.
Eyelash curlers scare the bejesus out of me. I have four of them, all gifts from people concerned about the straightness of my eyelashes apparently, that I pretty much never use. I really should give that another try.
PS – Jill, you have FABULOUS legs! You should be wearing skirts and shorts all the time. For real. Work it.
I hardly ever do, but I think you guys have successfully convinced me to— THANK YOU!
Great dress. Also, you have the Best. Hair. Ever. Tell me you’re not one of those girls with amazing curly hair who has cursed it her whole life!

For years, I was, but I’ve accepted it. (And found good product!)
Eyelash curlers are essential!! And that dress? Gorgeous on you. Target actually has really cute tops and accessories. I’ll never give up my expensive jeans, but I do love me some Target clothes. And bikinis!
Um, yeah. I wouldn’t know anything about their bikinis.
I am very jealous that you got to work with Target since that is where my entire wardrobe is purchased. I also use eyelash curlers and they are DA BOMB. I heat mine first slightly with a blow dryer before I use them and it works like a curling iron on hair. However, this is for someone with strong lashes so use with caution!
I am most excited about the words “cozy sweaters, boots” because that is my favorite time of year. Right now in south Louisiana we are in the 80′s already which means a LOOONG summer of me trying daily not to have to wear shorts. Or a bikini. Bring on the sweaters! Loved the post.

Eyelash curlers are key! I don’t leave the house without curling my eyelashes!
I just love you. I’m living vicariously through you! LUCKY!!!xoxo
Hey I gave that same Minnie money in October! HA! Love that dress on you. If Target ever brings you to their headquarters in Minneapolis – you must plan a blogger get-together here!

Ok Jill… you’ve just confirmed that I need to get my eyelash curler out of the drawer and start using it more – and more effectively. Thanks! :)

I was once curling my eyelashes, when someone knocked on the door, like my house was burning down. It scared the piss out of me and I ripped all of my eye lashes out on one side…not so fun.
If my lashes curl a lot naturally, do I need a curler? Or does the magic even cover me?
HI
You look terrific and I am so proud of you!!! Keep showing those legs!!xxxx
I have a fancy eyelash curler and I NEVER use it. Seriously never understood why I should. I’ve got thick, long lashes. Maybe I should try it out tomorrow…

i don’t have patience for eyelash curling. I’m afraid I’ll forget to open the damn thing and pull all my lashes out.
i forgot to tell you! since we both have curly hair. i have found bliss for my curls. Bumble & Bumble. AHHHmazing product for curly hair. Get the “leave-in” conditioner. Good bye paul mitchell. I finally have my curls back. Trust me on this one.
It’s much easier to udnretsand when you put it that way!
I was taught how to curl my eyelashes at my mother’s knee, but I don’t do it very often for the sake of speed. Thanks for the reminder.
That dress is the perfect length for you and the blue of the sweater is very flattering. Good choice!
Nordstroms does free scarf tying classes..seriously…there’s like over 50 ways they show you…just fyi…

Awesome!! Definitely a sharp contrast to my latest post where I talk about all the rags in my closet!http://lgoogoogaga.wordpress.com/2011/05/02/riches-to-rags/
FYI – Laura Mercier makes the best eyelash curler on the market for $16!!!
Eyelash curlers are a must. I would not have been able to wear those shoes for longer than 5 minutes. I can’t believe you made it through a day in them. The rest of the outfit was cute.

Oh my head you look sooo amazing! Beautiful! Seriously how do I get a target makeover? I’m 28 and feel frumpy all the time!
This whole Target thing is pure marketing genius– I have spent the past hour picking out outfits for you and me both! Love their clothes, but usually try to round out a head-to-toe Target outfit with a Coach purse and nice jewelry. ;-)
My favorite thing in my whole makeup case is my Shu Uemura 24 karat gold eyelash curler. I got it about five years ago because Jennifer Lopez has one, and who wouldn’t want her eyelashes!?

Thanks for the link to the scarf tutorial. I have tons of scarves and never really know how to wear them. Just this morning I was playing with one, finally gave up, and threw it back in the closet.

God I love your hair. And that dress is super cute. NYC Minnie is freaking me out though.
You look beautiful : )
I will have to dig my eyelash curler out.
I sort of stopped wearing ANY makeup or doing ANY thing about 2 years ago. I don’t know what is wrong with me. I am not an 80 year old… although, most 80 year olds probably do more than me in the morning : )

Yeah, boy. The Minnie Mouse made me scream. It’s fun to watch you as the Target “It Girl”, and I’m also in love with my Shu eyelash curler. It’s just a fine piece of equipment.

Fun post, adorable outfit and photos – sorry about the shoes – and congrats on being a Target insider. I don’t know how you did it, but it sounds like great fun. I would also like to thank you for the scarf tutorial. I wear them all the time, but now I will change up how I wear them.

Hey newbie here….As an OCD Tar-jay shopper i am sooooo jealous…(i swear i think i am see tinges of green on my skin)…at the fact that you are behind the scenes and wearing my favorite clothing line at Target. Okay. So. Here is my complaint…(tee hee) i wish merona would make dresses/blouses for plus size again…i have seen that they have added some to their website but not many. They used to have xxl and size 18 but now they don’t…which is a real bummer for me and other curvaceous women. I am 5’7 and wear a size 16 but i have a lot of junk in my trunk so a 16 skirt/dress will not budge over my buttay!!! So since you have the inside scoop let them know…i have written countless emails to them but to no avail. Okay that was my rant….but love the outfits on you…and btw…what size do you wear????
Thanks for your this Post! So Perfect~
I Love mascara, really Superb eyelash curlers and all things Lashes.
My new FAV is the Hot Lashes heated 2 pc lash curler. It has gotten great reviews at Amazon–Cult favorite Hot Lashes Makeup artist Kit..Absolute best..
They have a great sturdy 24K gold metal curler similiar to the Shu Uemura and Sheisdo one that comes with its own seperate pink small heater base that heats the pad in the curler.
Makes my eyes POP and keeps my lashes super curly, they have a website Hotlashes and I also read about them on Facebook~…HTH~
Major Rave, the cadillac of curlers..so worth the price. My friends and I love love love this one! Best by far,,
HTH~…:) Abundant blessings to all..
I am NOT getting paid to say this, although I will accept a box full if a company sees fit: Skip the eyelash curlers and fakes. L’oreal’s Double Extend has changed my life. Really. I used to make one of my daughters, whichever one was handy, do smudge patrol. It was a job they loved, and a critique I loathed. My son’s GF saved the day, by recommending this mascara! There are tons of “tube” mascaras out there, but only a few manufacturers, so L’oreal’s tubes are essentially Lancome’s, etc… For around $10.00, or less, you can get lashes for miles, no curler needed, at Target or wherever you choose to shop. Google it. The stuff is pure genius.
