One of Us

November 19, 2009

Everyday, I live in fear of something horrific happening to one of my kids. An accident, a disease…Those things can happen to any of our kids, and the mere thought is simply too much to bear.

And then there are the days I fear something horrific happening to Jeff or myself. An accident, a disease… Those things can happen to any of us, and the notion of my kids not growing up with Jeff or I is a terrifying one.

My bloggy friend, Anissa, just had a second stroke at 35. She is in the ICU with an uncertain future. Just last week she was celebrating the one-year anniversary of her daughter’s final chemo treatments. It’s just too much.

It is no surprise that the blogging community is rocked by this news. More than imagining that it could just as easily be us in that bed, it’s the fact that it’s her. She is hilarious and warm and absolutely inspiring. Meeting her at Blogher was a highlight of my trip. I think the world of her.

These things? They can happen to any one of us.  And they did.
