Overnight Growth Spurts

October 20, 2009

I remember the moment quite vividly that Lily looked like a kid to me, rather than a little girl. It was heartbreaking and exciting at once. My Benji seems to be approaching that line rapidly. He’s getting to be so strong willed and independent and I’m just not ready for him to grow up so quickly.

Overnight Growth Spurts

Fortunately, he still sleeps on my floor every night and poops in a diaper. I think I have a good few months left until he fully transitions into a big boy, and I’m in no rush. Well, except for the poop part.

This post is part of Angie’s Wordful Wednesday, and inspired by the film Motherhood. Play along! And, there’s still time to enter my Scary Mommy contest. I’m loving reading all of the entries! It’s so nice to know I’m not the scary one out there.

Even at 9, I keep hoping it will slow down and watch him transition into a big boy. I wonder if he will ever be a “big boy” in my eyes?

LOL at the pooping in a diaper. My almost 3-year-old has ZERO interest in leaving diapers. I tell him I’ve got it covered for a bit. But once he moves out of Pampers and into Depends he’s on his own. Those things get expensive.

I feel the same way about both my kids. My ‘baby’ turns 2 next week and it feels like I blinked my eyes and his baby days were over. My oldest is 7 going on teenager, and I swear he gets more mature and smarter every day. I want it to slow down…just a little, so I can remember more of the little moments.

Ugh! I just bought size 9 shoes for my almost 3 year old last weekend and they are HUGE! I thought to myself, these are big boys shoes, not baby shoes. It goes too fast. Too fast.

It is tough when they move from looking like a baby to looking like a little kid. I cannot imagine what it will be like when my little guy looks like a little boy!

You make me feel better – my little one sleeps on our floor too! I refuse to let him in the bed so I lay down blankets on the floor and he comes in a crashes there. He’s not even two yet but I just can’t get him to stay in his bed and he can climb out of any crib.

Awe, he has such gorgeous eyes!

My daughter is four months old this week, and my mother (who hasn’t seen her since before she was 2 months old) came to visit and I hadn’t realized until mom picked her up just how much she has grown… then yesterday we were in the grocery store and there was a woman holding a newborn and I said “Look, Sophie, that’s a new baby.”

The memory of labor is still so fresh. I can’t believe how fast this is going!

Oh god I so know that feeling.

Kai’s just started walking and literally over night it’s like someone has come and taken my podgy baby and replaced him with this lanky toddler. Trousers that were too long on him a fortnight ago are now round his calves – it’s no wonder he’s been eating me out of house and home.

Your boy is gorgeous honey – what a heartbreaker x

My eleven year old is losing his baby molars, is almost as tall as I am and wears men’s shoes but, somehow, he is still my little boy and always will be (whether he likes it or not!). I adored the baby that he was and am so proud of the boy that he has become. Cherish every stage; each one is special.

You know, I remember when this happened with both my girls – that moment when you realize they’re more of a big girl than little. And for me, it was when I looked at their feet! All of a sudden, they didn’t have cute little girly feet anymore – they were just … feet!

Oh my gosh, Jill – he is GORGEOUS. This picture should be in a frame in your house!
And about seeing them grow up so quickly – it is so bittersweet. But mostly it’s sad, because I don’t understand how it happens so fast. My 4 year old is so big now… he was JUST a newborn, in my arms… how? How did it happen that he is now 4? And getting to be so independent? And my baby boy… he’s growing up quicker than his brother did, because he wants to be just like his big brother… and I just want to tell him to slow down! In fact, he loves going peepee and poopoo on the toilet, and as much as I am proud of him, I’m not ready to really do all that potty training… he’s my baby and I love him in diapers! Does this mean I should start considering having another baby? ;)

One day, my 10-year-old woke up and NOTHING FIT. Not her school uniform, not even her SHOES that she had worn the day before. It was insanity. She’s been on a strict diet of soda, cake and candy only, no veggies, milk or vitamins, ever since, in order to ebb the growing.

My oldest is nine, but I still get the glimpse into the near future of her teen years. It seems just like yesterday she was itty bitty, needing me..for everything.

It’s the same with my one year old, too. I can’t wrap my brain around how, in just 365 days, she has transformed into this adorable, busy, intuitive toddler, when only days ago…she was brand new.

Instead of an easy button…I need a pause button.

I know the feeling all too well. I don’t miss the poop and wiping part, especially once it started to smell, but I miss the age. Funny how with each milestone you celebrate the newer expanded freedom you gain via their independence, but you mourn for the times when they needed you that much more. Funny balancing act this parenting stuff is, I guess it’s all good so long as they know you are still and forever their best friend!

Oh, every time I think of Kaish growing it scares me. It scares this part of me deep inside. I just love that I still know all about his world. The changes happen constantly though, don’t they? Like last week he told me he couldn’t possibly ever take a bath again. “But why” I inquired? “Oh Mom, Joey says only babies take baths. I can never take one again because I am in 4th grade mom. I am almost grown up.” So he is taking showers now. And I am watching my little boy grow up. It makes me cry sometimes Jill. It is happy that they are growing and learning and changing, but so hard too!
