Hilshire Farm sponsored a booth at BlogHer and I was picked to make a sandwich for Top Chef judge Padma Lakshmi. I’m not a food blogger, but I love Top Chef and it sounded like a fun way to spend an hour in NYC. Plus, I make pretty good sandwiches.
Or, not.
I joked about making mom food like peanut butter and fluff or grilled cheese on white bread with the crusts cut off for the great Padma. Instead, I settled on turkey with brie cheese, raspberry jam and arugula on pumpernickel bread. It was a bad call. To put it mildly.
Meet the judges:

See that look in Nicole’s eyes? She was out to get me from the beginning.

It’s not my fault that her underdeveloped palate can’t appreciate a properly aged cheese.

The poor kids all looked like they were all going to vomit. As far as I know, they didn’t, but I booked it out of there pretty fast.
But, not before snapping a picture with Padma, who was really excited to pose with me.

Let’s just say it wasn’t the shining moment of my weekend.
Next time, I’ll go with the fluff.

Personally, I think your sandwich sounds awesome. Well, except for the pumpernickel bread…its never been one of my faves.

You can never go wrong w/ the fluff. But, your sandwich sounded good to me. :)

A really nice blogger. Can’t remember what she made, but I am quite sure mine was better.
Oh no! They didn’t tell you it would be kid judges?? LOL
By the way, you have the most incredible smile. Every picture I see of you has that same smile. It’s beautiful.

No! They didn’t. And, thank you, so much. :)
This made me laugh so hard. I am waiting to go into court with my client and I just guffawed about Padma being excited to pose with you.
She just doesn’t know what a superstar you are! : )

I feel like I have to PhotoShop Padma into… something. *wheels turning*

But it was such a better story than just winning the contest!! And, I think it sounds delicious. What do kids know?
I had never heard of PB and fluff until my hubby dragged me to RI to live. I now have to keep the fluff in a cabinet I don’t look in often, lest I spoon eat it from the jar!!

For what it’s worth, I think it sounds delicious.
Oh…I am a huge Top Chef fan too, and I’m so very jealous of your opportunity – that is awesome!!!! But yeah, Miss Padma does not look like she was lurving on the whole chick blogger conference, huh?
Maybe somebody gave her bad food beforehand. Or maybe she was just gassy. She is a mom now, after all.

Padma scared me. She did not seem very excited to be there.
Haha guess you instincts were right this time!

“Bait and Switch”! Heh, heh- that is a good one- and I agree- they didn’t tell you that kids would be the judges???
wrong. just wrong. ;0)

But it was so so much fun to watch! Wish I was up closer for a few better shots of you making your sandwich!
What a waste of perfectly rotten treats! (the cheese I mean)
I’m sure I would have enjoyed it immensely! I love some cheese!
And I can bake….not to toot my own Tuba or anything….but I can rival Paula Dean on Southern desserts! But my kids prefer Jello pudding cups to my homemade perfection. It utterly mind numbing how their palate could be so indiscriminate!!

you need to come over to my house and make me that sandwich. i love brie something fierce.
also, padma isn’t repulsed by you, i’m sure of it. it looks like she just might have sharted or something. it’s totally not you.

For what is worth my eldest would have loved loved loved your sandwich (yes, my eldest is 18 months and yes she eats brie. And risotto and asperagus and advocado and … oh well she’ll eat anything)
Had you EVER fixed that sandwich in real life? Did you wildly search the internet for a sexy sandwich idea? Oh my. That was a good fail. Thanks for always being willing to put yourself out there and let us laugh at (oh I mean) WITH you. Cheers!

Hilarious. So much for my “sandwich theory”, which states that a sandwich made by someone else is always better than a sandwich made by yourself.

Hold up, what is fluff? Why is the poor Ukranian immigrant always the last to know?
Ohhhhh, sugary, marshmallow goodness!
I suspect there might have been some jury rigging because that sandwich sounds delish!
And SERIOUSLY Padma, it’s your job to smile, put some fucking effort into it.

Although she doesn’t look like she’s having any fun at all, is she even hotter in person?

I bet Tom would have appreciated your sandwich. I love him.
Totally. He’s so much wiser.
That’s so awesome! I’m a huge Top Chef and Padma fan.
Also, I’m confused about your sandwich. Turkey and cheese with jam? Maybe I’m missing something here, but isn’t jam supposed to go with peanut butter? Not turkey? I’m going to have to make this sandwich now to try and understand. :)

I swear, it’s SO SO good. Try it. And report back.
My kids would totally have loved your sandwich. I’ve tried so hard to get them to like more sophisticated things. They still love their PB&J but they will try out new things (and they usually like them).

I don’t suffer from real pregnancy cravings, but I am HIGHLY SUGGESTIBLE when it comes to food right now…and your sandwich description is killing me. I need to have one right now. Those snotty little brats didn’t even deserve to taste your wonderful sandwich.
Seriously. Drooling on the keyboard. I’m sending you the repair bill.

Oh no! Nicole was kind of a scary. That sandwich sounds delish. I hope someone got to enjoy it.
brie is an acquired taste. My totally adult husband and I were at a friend’s party. We were talking to our hostess when my hubs reaches over and grabs a huge blob of brie on a cracker. I waited. his expression was like those kids. Our gracious hostess hands him a napkin and told him to spit. lol

I’m already terrified of teenagers and that look in Nicole’s eyes would have stopped me from making any kind of sandwich, much less one than involved arugula. You are a brave woman; I kneel to your courage, if not your sammy skill-set.

LOVE Padma. Partly because she can be such a snot. I’ll call it a discerning palette when I feel like being politically correct. She looks like she just ate something bad. Priceless that you are so totally tickled in the picture and she is anything but.
Kid Judges, definitely the toughest. You had your work cut out for you from the very beginning.
