She Works Hard for the Money

Lily: I really need some more money. I don’t have enough.

Me: OK, you can do some chores. The playroom needs cleaning, your shoes can be straightened up and Penelope needs to be fed.

Lily: Nah, I don’t want to do those kinds of chores. I could draw you a picture. You know how people pay artists for their art?

Me: Not quite what I was thinking, but ok… How about a picture of all of us? We don’t have many of those.

Lily: No. I want to draw a supermarket.

Me: Ooookay…

I paid her a nickle for it, admitting that it was a pretty darn good supermarket. I fear that I’ve set a very poor precedent, however. She just asked me how much she could get for drawing a whole city.

So funny! And it is a great picture. Wonder why she chose a supermarket?

Kids are just the best negotiators.

I’d still try for that picture of the whole family.

was she dreaming of wegmans at least?

3 SquiggleMum May 23, 2009 at 8:21 am

LOL I love this post. Maybe you should set up an Etsy shop for her. If she sells lots of cute hand drawn cards you can charge her to advertise on your blog!

Hey a nickle sounds good to me. I wish *I* could go to work and say, “Nah, I don’t wan to do that. How ’bout you pay me to do THIS?”

And that picture is pretty good!

Please! An artist can never be given direction! They must allow their muse to move them! ;)
Great drawing!

Too funny. I can always tell when my girls are aching for something, b/c they start suggesting new chores to be paid to do!

14 T Rex Mom May 23, 2009 at 3:27 pm

You must buy a lot of fruit – that’s the only thing in the basket and she is in the fruit section!

And I love the lights in the grocery store – very vogue!

Maybe she will be an artist and get paid for her drawings!

Clever girl- she is my inspiration! Never really had the courage to say “NO, but you can pay me for….”My friend actually made her husband pay her for -not the housework- that other thing. She made a bloody fortune- if she could have drawn this well she never would have had to be her husbands hooker. GRRRL power -oh yeah!

22 Rebecca May 23, 2009 at 9:30 pm

Oh ya…been there! Although they have never asked to draw for $.

Great pic!
My mom used to pay me a quarter for each piece of clothing that I would iron. After I ran out of pants and shirts in the house, I moved on to socks and underwear. She didn’t think those were worth paying for though for some reason!

How funny. Ironically my 6 year old was coloring on the front porch yesterday and she came in the house yesterday with a dollar bill. I asked where she got it and she told me she was selling her pictures to the neighbors. Boy am I glad I know our neighbors well or I would have had to die from embarrasment!!

Oh boy. See, this is why I’m not a parent. What do you do in this situation? Give her the ‘that’s why they call it work’ speech? Or let her push to find her own ways to make money? Raise a practical, grounded kid who might not follow her dreams? Or raise a dreamer who might lack a work ethic?

My god, how in the world do you mothers sleep at night? I just don’t know how you do it …

Your daughter is beginning to learn the art of negotiation. It can be annoying at times but it is a very important life skill. I am very impressed by her response. My little girl’s favorite thing to do now is to ask for two of what she wants.
