Sir Richard Owen

Have you ever heard of Sir Richard Owen?

I hadn’t. Or, maybe I had years ago but like most other information I learned before motherhood, it evaporated from my brain.

But, I digress.

Tonight, my neighbor was over retrieving her daughter from my house. In her arms was her (most adorable) baby boy. Lily peered over him.

He looks just like Sir Richard Owen, she pronounced.

Huh, we asked looking at her?

He looks just like Sir Richard Owen. Look it up on the computer!

So I did.

And he does.

Remarkably.

Lily tells me Sir Richard Owen named the dinosaurs. Wikipedia confirms.

She’s way too smart for me.

I swear, he really is an adorable baby!! They all just resemble old men at that age. Except Evan, who totally looked Chinese.

You’re sweet Jill. :) As Mom of said “adorable baby” I have to admit I do see the resemblance, especially in the bags under his eyes. Hopefully he’ll grow up cuter …
But I’m with you – I’m just still amazed that Lilly made that reference! Never heard of him.

Sir Richard Owen clearly should have named the most clever dinosaur a Lilyosaurus.

Your daughter is brilliant…and observant. This will serve her well in life…and drive you crazy when she’s a teenager. Enjoy it while she is still young and can’t outsmart you yet. (I’m speaking from experience on this one. Love that my kids are smarter than I am, so long as they are not using their intelligence against me.)

Who the hell is that kid hanging out with? You must sever those ties immediately. Time is of the essence. Head my warning.

I have to say she’s brilliant. A few years back, my now 6yo was big into the states and capitals and maps. One day, my mom was over and he recited off a list of state capitals to her. Ever since, she thinks he’s a genius. It’s amazing what they remember and grasp onto.

I am super impressed and I am RELATED to Richard Owen lol! I have a family who is really into genealogy (it goes beyond a normal hobby since I remember spending my childhood looking over micro-phish to find birth records for my mother and grandmother). This is why I know who is and know he was not taught in school. I had a book about dinosaurs that mentioned him, but most do not.

My grandmother always said each of her children were genuises . . . until they went to school. I remember one of my son’s friends in the first grade able to SPELL all the dinosaur names! Sigh! I wish I was as smart as Lily, too – and had a daughter with her name – that was one of my favorites!
