SNL Goes There, 'Meet Your Second Wife' Sketch Is So Bad It's Good

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted Saturday Night Live last weekend, and the show did not disappoint. Of all the sketches, one stood out for its epic cringeworthiness. And hilarity. It will really make you miss Tina and Amy… deeply.

“Meet Your Second Wife” is a gameshow where men are brought up on stage to — you guessed it — meet their second wives. Amy and Tina give the middle-aged men a glimpse into their futures, and their future wives.

“He’s a professor from Alexandria, Virginia. He’s a software engineer from Palo Alto, California. And he’s a financial analyst in Boston, Massachussetts. They may not know it yet, but they’re all guests on America’s favorite new show… Meet Your Second Wife!”

One by one, the men are told about the changes to come in their professional and personal lives. And one by one they’re shown the children they will someday marry. Yup, you read that right. The whole sketch is a blow to the age disparity that exists when some older men *ahem* date. And remarry. So the men are meeting their future wives, at the age they are now.

“Okay Steve, let’s meet your second wife!”

“How many years old are you Stacy? That is five fingers, I believe she’s trying to say she’s five. “

Oh. My. God.

The sketch gets progressively worse (meaning better) as it goes on.

It’s funny because it’s TRUE. Pew research backs up the stereotype that men remarry younger: “Some 20% of men who are newly remarried have a wife who is at least 10 years their junior, and another 18% married a woman who is 6-9 years younger.” While there’s nothing wrong with marrying younger, we can all probably agree that this is largely a male experience — rarely do you see the age disparity swing in the other direction. Especially when it comes to larger age gaps.

There are some who question if the joke went too far, but when you remember Patrick Stewart married a woman 39 years his junior, suddenly that ultrasound bit doesn’t seem so outlandish. It’s a joke clearly written by women for women, and it’s funny as hell. It’s pretty common knowledge that society is harder on women as they age. Times that by a million if you’re in Hollywood. Fey may have pushed the boundaries when she wrote the sketch but good for her. The first wives club deserves a laugh, too.

Men… you get to remarry young and we get to laugh at your asses. Life is fair like that.
