Social Media Icons

So, you want some social media icons on your blog?

You know those cute little icons that lead you to someone’s Twitter or Facebook account or allow you to subscribe via RSS? I’m kind of obsessed with them and swap them out way too frequently. They’re fun, and oh, so cute! I get asked how to do it quite often, so here you go…

The first step is to find images that you like. You’ll then need to upload them to a photo storing site like Flickr or to your blogs media library. Grab the url in the size you want it to appear on your blog (usually around 100 pixels.) Once you do that, you’re ready to code! Simply plug-in your image url as well as your destination (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr etc.) and title. This is the code you need to work with: (what you need to swap out is in red.)

Once you have your your code, you just add it to a widget for it to appear on your sidebar. Easy, right? Use the same formula for all of your social media applications. To add your RSS feed, go to Feedburner (or whatever site you use) to get the url. (Mine is http://feeds.feedburner.com/scarymommy.)

Here are some of my favorite icon sets (just click to be brought to the download page,) but you can just Google “Social Media Buttons,” and you’ll get a million options. I’m warning you, it’s totally addictive. Don’t hate me.

OMG! What are you? Some kinda creepy, psychic, mind-reader-thing-a-ma-person? I was looking for these just this weekend for the site I’m working for. I’m usually not such a techno loser but (despite repeated googling) I remain baffled by how to set-up buttons on my blog so that someone can share my blog to THEIR own FB or Twitter account. Can you assist with this? I used wordpress.

I use a plug-in called Sexy Bookmarks: http://www.sexybookmarks.net/
But, if you search for social bookmarks under the wordpress plugins, you’ll find lots of them!

And a question for you because Google and WP are confusing me…can you only add plug-ins if you have a wordpress.org site and not a .com? From what I can tell, I think I need to graduate to .org if I want to do more with my site design-wise. Thoughts?

I love switching out my buttons too! It’s on my list again for this week and I thought it was funny that I have so many of the same button sites bookmarked. They are SO cute and fun. I was supremely ticked when I found ones I loved last week and they were not free. Boo! The search continues!

Hallelujah! I have been trying to figure this out for months! Finally I googled something that must have made sense and your site came up. I thought, “Hey! I remember speaking at BlogHer and she was one smart cookie!” And sure enough, I plugged in the code and it worked! Thank you a million times over :-)

Thanks so much for the tutorial! One question, when I enter the url code for the icon from my media file on WordPress, the pic doesn’t show up on my blog. However when I click on it, it goes to the page I requested. Any idea on what I’m doing wrong?
