For the past few weeks, Lily has been talking about the upcoming fairytale play. The kids have been studying and reading all about fairytales and the lesson will culminate in a big class performance at the end of the month.

Yesterday, on the first day back from winter break, the cast was finally announced. The school lobby was buzzing with expectant mothers waiting to hear what role their budding actors and actresses would be playing.

“Cinderella!” I heard one girl gleefully announce.

“The fairy godmother!” sang Lily’s best friend.

“A step-sister!”

“The queen!”

“The prince!”

I spotted Lily rounding the corner with a huge smile on her face. My little beauty would make a perfect Snow White, I thought. Perhaps Little Red Riding Hood? Oh, the photos I would capture! It made my heart skip a beat.

“Soooooo?” I inquired.

She beamed and handed me the sheet. I scanned it for the highlighted text. And, then I scanned it some more.

“Stagehand Two!” she excitedly blurted out. “I’m StageHand Two!”

Stagehand Two, as in the second of two 2nd graders in the same role. Stagehand Two, as in, pushing props around the stage throughout the show. Stagehand Two, as in… the crew.

The only crew.

But, she does have a speaking line, and she’ll move that wagon with all of her might.

She’ll be the best Stagehand Two that school ever saw, dammit, and I’ll be snapping away in the audience.

At least, I hope so. Or, next year she’ll be playing the role of “Silent Rock.”

(And, she’d make the best rock ever.)

I think that’s awesome! Anyone can be Cinderella but who has the balls to take on the role of Stagehand 2? Not just anyone!

It’s so great that she is stoked about it too :)

It’s amazing how children can be content with even the simplest of things….warms my heart! ;)

Very sweet, Jill! Rebecca is already assuming she’ll play the part of Pharaoh or Moses in the preschool Passover play. Hoping she reacts like Lily did if she’s Israelite #15.

She could very well steal the show. No, literally steal all the props and run away with the show.

Stagehand two is a really important part! The folks in the background rarely get the spotlight but are SO crucial. I’m so happy that she was happy. :)

I love that Stagehand Two got a similar excited response as Cinderella or Fairy Godmother. Pleasing kids is so easy. Besides, there’s no such thing as “just” Stagehand Two. Those props won’t get there by themselves. Those fairytale princesses NEED HER.

Hey no worries! Remember in To Kill a Mockingbird? Scout was a ham. She had to yell “pork!” and run across the stage. I think stagehand two sounds much more glamorous.

Love the innocence in her response! Reminds me of when my daughter excitedly told me that she was picked to be Mary in the school Christmas play. My heart swelled with pride, thinking how talented she must be for the music teacher to have picked her out of all the girls! Then she adds that the teacher drew her name out of a hat, b/c all the girls wanted to be Mary…LOL!! Love it.

As a theater major and lifelong stage hand, Lily’s excitement warms my (somewhat bitter) heart. Stagehands and techies are truly the unsung heroes of theater.

The stagehand has a line? Is it “yo, Cinderella, move yer fricken behind, you’re sitting on my prop?”

‘Cause that’s what I’m assuming.

I love her for this.

When my oldest was in first grade he came home and told me that he was going to be a donkey in the school musical. He said he needed me to knit him ears and a tail, and I was beside myself already planning those pictures. I started knitting away, and it wasn’t until I sat and watched my donkey singing smack dab in the middle of a sea of farmers that I realized he wasn’t cast as a donkey at all. He just *decided* he was going to be a donkey in the school musical. Obviously I still got pretty good pictures;)

Way to go, Lily. Break a leg!

My oldest would love to be Stagehand 2. He prefers not to have speaking parts as opposed to his little sister who is yearning to own the spotlight.

Feels like there are two school productions a month. I like seeing the kids perform, but sometimes it gets old watching your son/daughter try to win the Oscar when we know mine already did. ;)

They should just have one day a year where your kid stands on the stage and performs solo. No sitting through other lame kids, no dying of boredom. Just the only one you really care about in the least.

39 Jack@TheJackB January 6, 2012 at 8:07 pm

That begs a question, what do you do when your child can’t sing and desperately wants the lead in the play.
