How did mothers ever cook dinner before the invention of television?

Seriously, Scooby-Doo, you’re a life saver. Bless you.

Oh my gosh this just made me laugh out loud! My little guy was standing in front of the tv like a zombie the other day, but I was able to eat my lunch and get off a few emails…..Seriously, how was it done so many years ago??

I have no idea. The TV is a total lifesaver when I really need to distract the toddler, get something done or have just a little bit of time to myself. Her current addictions include Sesame Street and Bear in the Big Blue House.

We had to buy a second video of The Lion King, as my son wore out the first one. Yes, I am a horrid mother that let her son stay glued to a movie over and over….because it was the ONLY time he ever sat still. I could count on 90 minutes of non-destruco-boy each day and it was heaven.

See here’s the problem with letting your kids watch too much TV. When you want them out of your hair – the TV magic doesn’t work. Which would be why I have 3 sous chefs whenever I’m in the kitchen. The big one has sensory issues and can’t keep his hands out of flour. Good times.

I am a total believer in letting kids watch tv to entertain them while “adults” take care of things.

Reply

47 Molly March 5, 2010 at 2:32 pm

It was far more acceptable to just put them in a room and close the door back then.

But yes, as much as I hate the Pokemon TV shows and find that Elmo’s voice makes me want to crawl out of my skin, if my kids want more then chicken nuggets for dinner, I can find a way to love these shows.

My son came home from a playdate yesterday and announced his friend’s family doesn’t own a TV. I was immediately appalled, skeptical, and shamed, all at the same time. Obviously, I have not made peace with my kids’ TV watching. Given that my 3yo is super verbal & social I don’t think it’s done him any significant harm, but I can’t shake the feeling of judgment that non-TV families must have for “people like us.” BTW, I grew up in a household where TV watching was very restricted. Boy, did that backfire!
