Time Flies When You’re Having Fun. And Even When You’re Not

I can’t remember if I felt this way before I was a mom, but now that I am, the days seem to last forever but the months just fly by. Let’s take summer, for instance. There were days, many days, that I thought would just never end. But, now that it’s over, it seemed to be gone in a blink. How is that?

Even after vowing last summer to send the kids to camp this year, I didn’t. We took a two week trip east, but for the most part spent the lazy days at home, with each other. Indeed, the days were endless, but, like last year, they seemed to be really good for the kids. The three of them came out of the summer even tighter than before, forming their own little team. They really are the best of friends.

Next summer, I really do plan on sending them to camp. Lily, especially, really needs the stimulation and excitement. But, I know that even if I flake out and end up keeping them home, it won’t be the end of the world.

Not even close.

Don’t you just LOVE watching them bond!?! Laina’s the middle child and she plays SO well with Maile and with Kainoa…I feel like she kind of unites both ends.

Summers are so very very long, but I never ended up sending mine to camp either. Somehow we managed to fill the time.

I agree – even those long (boring) summer days can drag, we always wish we had more at the end of the summer.

I know exactly what you mean. My kids were invited to come to camp all summer, and while it was a huge wonderful blessing, I also spent the majority of the summer missing them.

I think the best gift you can give your kids is a strong relationship with their siblings. It lasts a lifetime.

24 angie September 22, 2009 at 11:53 am

I totally agree that being home and not going to camps or on big vacations is not the end of the world. Further, usually it’s the little things at home that leave the lasting memories.

25 Sam_I_Am September 22, 2009 at 12:06 pm

That’s what I think I missed most in my childhood- having a close sibling. My brother is 15 years older than me, so I never had a playmate. My goal for kids is to have 3 close in age. Crazy stressful for me, but good for them.

26 Erica September 22, 2009 at 12:35 pm

You have plenty of time before the camp thing starts – I am glad you took the summer “off” from that type of thing. My boys spent this past summer at camp and although they loved it I never really knew “what” they were learning and from “who.” (If you know what I mean.)

My favorite summers as a kid seemed endless, in a good way, and still do in memory. All of my kid’s friends go to camp and when they come back they end up listening to all the stories about what we did while they were at camp.
I love summer, now that it’s almost October ;-)

Well there definitely are worse ways to spend a summer. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to spend this time with our kids – too many mothers don’t get the chance of so much time. I know for me this summer was probably the only one like it that I’ll have – and I will never forget how special it was!!

Your kids are so lovely, Jill. I never grow tired of looking at them…or hearing them scream when we are on the phone together.

You should have three more.

PS: Jeff? Are you reading this? My decision involves you.
