If you live in a heavily child-populated suburb, you are probably familiar with the tradition of getting Boo’d. It’s where a family prepares Halloween goodies and doorbell ditches another family, leaving the treats behind. Along with the goodies is an instruction sheet and a sign to hang on the door, letting others know that your house has already been hit. The house that has been Boo’d must do the same to two more homes, thus involving the whole area. Our neighborhood takes all things Halloween very seriously, and this game is no exception.
My family is not the most popular in our very tight knit, conservative ‘hood. I tend keep to myself and let my children run around like animals in our not-so-private back yard. Our lawn is an embarrassment, I take way too long to bring in the trash cans and there has been a popped out screen window sitting on my front grass for weeks. We’re just a bit… different and I know it drives the neighbors crazy.
Last night, our doorbell rang just before nine. The kids bolted down from their rooms and I let them peek out, sure we had just been Boo’d. Indeed, we had. The basket waiting for us was more than impressive— glow sticks, brownies, books, arts and crafts, the works… While the kids were tearing out the candy and battery operated toys, Jeff noticed that there was also a bottle of wine tucked in. Really, I asked, from the computer? That’s kind of odd, but sweeeeeet!
Later, as I was putting the rest of the contents away, I read the wine label:
Hell Raiser.
I believe this takes getting Boo’d to a whole new level.
And I do believe my neighbors are a bit cooler than I thought.

That’s cool. Living in the swamp, I had never even heard of getting Boo’d until last year. Sadly we’ve never been Boo’d, and I doubt we ever will……

We were boo’d twice – guess they did not entirely read the memo to not “rehaunt” someone who has a ghost hanging on the door. But we did not get a fancy basket only a small plate of cookies – maybe I need a different neighborhood! But the batches were really good, though.
Happy Halloween!

I think you are totally in, now. The Hell Raiser proves it.

I’ve lived in many, many different neighborhoods over the years and I’ve never heard of being BOO’d until this year, when it seems like everyone is doing it. Aside from us, still. It’s a great idea. And obviously, the people who BOO’d you are definitely parents themselves.

i think you have to be actually be friends, or friendly, with your neighbors in order to get boo’d, right? i don’t make the effort. we don’t get trick or treaters either, EVER. i wouldn’t mind a nice gift basket from a stranger. take care.

So… I have NEVER heard of that, it sounds awesome. My cousin, however, had a strange gift of food dropped off at her doorstep a few months ago. With a strange note like “we all need help at times. pass on the blessings to another family.
And it was weird food. And they were like WHAT? THey both are employed and not having a hard time that anyone should think they need help. And the handwriting was weird. They ended up calling the police to report the strangeness and threw everything away in case it was poisoned or something.
Now if they had just included a bottle of Hell Raiser, I bet they would have been cool with it.

We usually get boo’d a few times before Halloween, but nothing as nice as your stash. Usually just a plate of goodies. This year, though……..nada. :)

You are totally and completely the coolest neighbors in your development : ) I just know it! I mean, you did help those college kids with their magazines and everything didn’t you?
Our neighborhood does not do that. We should though. Maybe I will start it : )

It does sound like your neighbors actually are cool. You know we live in a neighborhood with mostly old ppl who have nothing but time to landscape and keep their yard pretty. We have lived here for 5 years and the only landscaping that I have is the weeds that grow in our rock beds. That is why I am thankful for winer. At least the house looks decent with snow on the ground.

WOW!!! No ones does any thing like that in our neighborhood – perhaps it is time to start a new tradition.
Oh – and I am sure that my house is “that” house in the neighborhood – all of Madaline summer toys are still strewn through the entire yard – and I noticed that a few of them hand blown into the neighbors yard. Perhaps I should go collect them before they become nothing more than lumps & bumps under the snow. Oh – and one of our front porch lights is out – and I am sure I can keep coming up with lots of stuff, that makes us “that” house too.
