Jonathan: baby boy name meaning and popularity

A variation of a Hebrew name that means “gift of Jehovah,” this one falls a little lower on the list than its most common nickname, John, but is totally better than its root name, Yehonatan. At least it’s easier to pronounce. Or if you really want to switch things up, tell people it’s pronounced “Joe-Nathan.”

John or Johnny … or Jon or Jonny, if you’re opposed to the “h.”

Famous people named Jonathan:

Actors Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jon Hamm, John Ritter, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Jonathan Brandis; comedian Jon Stewart; novelist Jonathan Swift.

Fun fact:

One of the main characters in Bram Stoker’s Dracula was Jonathan Harker, who was played in the 1992 movie by the uber-swoonworthy Keanu Reeves.
