So we all know Egypt is a place name. But popular opinion is that the name itself is derived from the Late Egyptian place name "Hikuptah," which meant "home of the soul of Ptah." The Greeks morphed it into Aígyptos, the Middle French word became "Egypte," and somehow it turned into the form that's familiar to us: Egypt. The more you know, the more you can share with your little Egypt if questions about name origins should ever arise.
