The Biden Inauguration Team has so many ways for your kids to learn and celebrate this historic day

It’s Inauguration Day and hopes are high for brighter days ahead. Our kids are watching and for the last four years, the news hasn’t been so great. Now? Happy days are here again and we want them to be able to celebrate alongside us. Thankfully, the Biden Inauguration Team has us covered with tons of great ways for our kids to learn and enjoy this historic day.

The PIC (Presidential Inauguration Committee) is hosting a first-ever “curated livestream for young Americans before and during the Inaugural Ceremonies, when President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Harris are sworn in as the President and Vice President of the United States.”

The livestream is being hosted by Keke Palmer, and will feature a special message from our new first lady, Dr. Jill Biden along with relevant commentary from historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Erica Armstrong Dunbar.

Perhaps most exciting for our little ones will be a segment on presidential pets produced by Nickelodeon. Yes, that means we will be hearing about Champ and Major Biden, the new White House First Puppers, and other famous doggos who have lived in the People’s House. Of course not Trump’s, because he was one of only two presidents to not have a dog in the White House.

The team is also providing kids with “excerpts of student voices from PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs ‘We the Young People’ programming. That means fun trivia questions, including some asked by Second Gentleman Doug Emhof, segments produced by the Library of Congress, and other special features.

The livestream can be watched at BidenInaugural.org/youth on Wednesday, January 20, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Eastern. It will also be broadcast by Nickelodeon, Discovery Education, Amazon Prime Video, and via websites, apps, and social media platforms. It will be streamed online by PBS NewsHour. A Spanish-language broadcast will air on Discovery Familia later on January 20.

Other materials available include:

  • a coloring book that families can download at BidenInaugural.org/coloringbook.
  • Discovery’s “I Do Solemnly Swear” program, which features access to this historic event through interviews with inaugural experts, historians, and even a shout-out from First Lady Jill Biden, who will provide a greeting for students. It premiered yesterday and you can watch it anytime thanks to YouTube

PBS has also curated an educational collection of “classroom-ready resources about U.S. presidential inaugurations” PBS LearningMedia. PBS’s Presidential Inaugurations Collection provides educators with interdisciplinary resources, media clips, and primary source materials – all with educator support materials – to help students in grades 4-12 learn about the importance of presidential inaugurations in the United States.

Enjoy this historic and educational day with your kiddos!
