The mom of the birthday kid had the guests make Build-A-Bear stuffed animals — and then hand them over to her daughter

A mom took to Reddit over the weekend with an extremely upsetting Build-A-Bear birthday party tale you won’t soon forget. The mom of the birthday kid made a pretty bonkers decision at the end of the shindig that has this parent wondering if they’re correct in being upset.

Spoiler alert: they’re 100 percent right.

The mom took her six-year-old daughter to a Build-A-Bear birthday party that was attended by a total of eight kids. She explains that the party was held at the store but not run by the employees, so after cake and pizza in the food court, the kids headed over to make their own special stuffed animal before wrapping festivities at the birthday girl’s house. The Redditor even gave the party mom an extra $30 to help with whatever (pricey) accessories the kids wanted to add to their creations. Then, all hell broke loose.

She says the kids got “wild” with making their animals complete with accessories. “As far as I know the parents didn’t really put a limit, but I made my daughter stick to just a standard dog with a shirt, which about half the parents did as well,” she says. But as the crew finished up, the birthday mom pulled an audible that literally dropped my jaw.

“All is well, we leave the store, then friends mom announces that the kids need to give all their animals to her daughter,” she says. “Cue the upset and angry kids. They all disappointingly handed over their animals, and friend wasn’t even being nice about it either. Another little boy didn’t want to, and friend ripped it out of his hands.”

“I probably should have said something, but I didn’t,” she laments. “The other parents seemed pretty baffled too.”

Sadly, that wasn’t even all of the torment this weirdo mom had in store. “We get back to friends house and our kids are watching as friend plays with all her new animals,” she recounts. “I left with my daughter pretty quickly, and once we got back into the car she just started bawling. I felt bad so we went to build a bear and got her a new one.”

And not a single soul blames her.

The mom wonders at the end of her post if she’s being entitled, and to that we say, not even one bit. Entitled would be insisting her child builds a bear even though that’s not part of the plan or party budget. Teasing a kid by letting them create their own stuffed animal only to tell tell them right after that they have to gift it to the birthday girl is straight up nonsense — and fellow Redditors totally agree.

Plenty of people thought that beyond it being particularly cruel, it was just plain bizarre.

Like, it was just handled extremely poorly whatever the birthday mom’s intentions.

Not to mention, a super greedy move if the kids brought another gift as well.

Several posters suggested this mom confront the birthday mom.

And she tells Scary Mommy she’s planning to do exactly that. “I am planning on speaking to the mom at my daughter’s school later today,” she says.

We can only hope that a gentle (or maybe not so gentle?) conversation will make her see the error of her ways. Waving a personalized stuffed animal in a six-year-old’s face only to promptly take it away is pretty diabolical. We hope it all gets sorted in the end — and that parents hosting similar parties in the future are extremely clear in their end game to avoid this kind of debacle.
