Trump tells reporters he’s “going to have a little fun” visiting with Santa Fe victims’ families

In the year of our Lord 2018, our actual president, the person half this country inexplicably chose as their fearless leader, once again reminded us what a completely horrific and embarrassing human he really is. While talking to reporters before boarding a plane to visit the families of victims of the very recent Santa Fe school shooting, he told them he planned to “have a little fun.”

With the families of murdered high school students. Unreal.

In case you think I’m joking, there’s actual video footage of Trump chit-chatting about all the “fun” he plans to have with mourning families whose teens were just shot to death at school earlier this month. Oh, he also took a few seconds to plug the economy and unemployment rate. Because he can literally work crass self-promotion into any conversation.

“I just want to tell you we’re doing very well with North Korea … a letter is going to be delivered to me from Kim Jong Un, so I look forward to seeing what’s in the letter,” Trump says. “…Other than that, the economy is good, stock market is up, a lot of jobs, best unemployment we’ve had in many, many decades actually. And we’re going to Dallas, we are going to Houston, we are going to have a little fun today.”

What. In. The. Actual. Fuck.

OK, we know he’s an inarticulate blurter who frequently comes across like a complete moron. He is a complete moron. But even from him, that is a monumentally tone-deaf and insensitive remark to make about visiting families who buried their children only days ago. This man is an idiot, that’s not up for debate. But since he’s president, his idiocy has the power to hurt people. I can’t even imagine how I would feel as one of those parents hearing him call their upcoming visit, related to the violent deaths of their children, an opportunity for “fun.”

The plan is for Trump to spend part of today meeting with families of the 10 people who died in the May 18th shooting. His initial response to the massacre was widely criticized for its casual nature, so his latest off-the-cuff dumb comment is just salt in the wound for those who lost loved ones. The day of the shooting, he tweeted, “School shooting in Texas. Early reports not looking good. God bless all!”

Exclamation points. In a message about kids being shot at school.

Of course, this is the man who tossed rolls of paper towels into a crowd of evacuated hurricane survivors. He also required a little note to remind him to say empathetic things to the families of school shooting survivors, students, and families of victims during a sit-down after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre. Oh, and he also royally botched a phone call to a fallen soldier’s widow, which in the world of presidential PR, should’ve been a complete gimme. Just be nice to the pregnant woman who lost her husband while he was serving our country. But even that proved beyond his abilities.

So while his latest gross comment is worthy of every bit of our outrage, no one can say it’s surprising. We have a president who cares about one person and one person only. To expect more from him would make us all fools.
